Chapter 1: The Ultimatum
Isabella Carter stared out the window of her old, weathered family home, her gaze lost in the sprawling gardens that had seen better days. The once lush flowerbeds were now overgrown, a stark reflection of the Carter family's dwindling fortune. Inside, the atmosphere was just as bleak. The echo of urgent, hushed conversations filled the air, conversations that invariably ended as soon as she entered the room. That evening, her father summoned her to the study—a room where the walls were lined with portraits of illustrious ancestors, now judging their descendants from their gilded frames. Her heart sank as she approached, sensing the gravity of the upcoming discussion. "Isabella, thank you for coming," her father began, his voice weary. He looked older than his fifty years, the stress of financial ruin etching deeper lines into his face each day. "We've discussed this as a family, and we believe we've found a solution to our problems," her mother chimed in, her tone unusually firm. Isabella's stomach tightened. "What solution?" she asked, although part of her didn’t want to know the answer. Her father exchanged a glance with her mother before continuing. "We have received a proposal from Jonah Blackwood. He has offered to clear all our debts," he paused, choosing his next words carefully, "in exchange for your hand in marriage." The room spun slightly as she processed the words. Jonah Blackwood, a man whispered about in their circles, known for his reclusive nature and rumored disabilities. A man she had never met, now expected to be her husband. "But I don't even know him," Isabella protested, her voice a mixture of disbelief and despair. Her mother’s expression hardened. "We don't have the luxury of choice, Isabella. This is about survival. It's not just us—think about the employees, the estate, your future." Isabella felt a bitter laugh escape her lips. My future? She thought bitterly. It was always about the family, never about her own desires or dreams. Her gaze fell to the floor, defeated. Seeing her capitulation, her father softened. "We know this is a lot to ask, Isabella. But Jonah is not as bad as the rumors suggest. He's a quiet man, keeps to himself. It could be much worse." That night, Isabella lay in her bed, the moon casting shadows across her room that felt like bars on a cell. The choice before her wasn’t really a choice. It was a sentence. As sleep finally claimed her, her dreams were filled with faceless men and crumbling estates, the remnants of a life that was slipping through her fingers.
