As her career and personal life spiral out of control, Lydia turns to therapy, where she is introduced to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to manage her condition. Through her relationships with family, friends, and her on-and-off boyfriend Adam, Lydia grapples with her intense emotions, fear of rejection, and a desperate need for connection. Along the way, she learns to navigate the complexities of her mental health, finding moments of growth, healing, and self-acceptance. *"Edge of Emotion"* is a raw, introspective look at the challenges of living with BPD, exploring themes of identity, emotional regulation, and the power of human connection. It is a story of vulnerability, resilience, and the hope for healing in the face of overwhelming emotions.

Chapter 1 : The Breaking Point
Lydia Tan sat at her desk, eyes glued to the flickering screen in front of her. The faint hum of the office air conditioning did little to drown out the anxious chatter swirling in her head. Her chest tightened as she read the email again, her pulse quickening. It was a simple request from her boss, nothing more than a routine project update, but Lydia’s mind spun out of control. Why hadn’t she mentioned it sooner? Is she disappointed in me? Am I going to get fired? The thought crashed into her like a tidal wave, drowning out any semblance of calm she had left. Her breathing became shallow, her hands clenching into fists beneath the desk. She glanced around the office, her coworkers laughing, chatting, oblivious to the storm brewing inside her. No one noticed the panic creeping up her spine, suffocating her from within. No one ever noticed. To them, she was Lydia Tan, the polished, capable marketing professional who handled her work with ease. But they didn’t see the cracks in the surface, the internal battle she fought every single day. Lydia’s phone buzzed, pulling her out of her spiraling thoughts. It was Adam. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the message. “Hey, do you have time to talk tonight? We need to sort some things out.” She stared at the screen, her mind immediately jumping to the worst conclusion. He’s leaving. He’s finally leaving me. Her stomach twisted, and the nausea hit her in waves. The logical part of her brain told her that she was overreacting, that Adam wasn’t leaving her, not yet anyway. But the louder voice—the one that had controlled her for years—insisted otherwise. The fear of abandonment that lingered in every interaction with Adam resurfaced, stronger than ever. Panic set in, her hands trembling as she began typing a response, deleting it, typing again. She wanted to ask what he meant, but she was too afraid of the answer. Instead, she locked her phone and shoved it into her desk drawer, hoping that by ignoring it, the fear would go away. It didn’t. Lydia stood up abruptly, nearly knocking over her chair in the process. Her coworker, Nick, shot her a concerned glance from across the room. “You okay?” he asked, his voice soft but filled with curiosity. “Yeah,” she forced a smile, “Just need some air.” Nick nodded, not pressing further, as Lydia rushed out of the office. The moment she stepped outside, the humid Singapore air hit her, sticking to her skin. Her legs carried her to the nearby café, the one where she had spent countless hours trying to escape her own mind. Today, the familiar setting offered little comfort. As she stood in line, her thoughts raced. What if I lose Adam? What if I’m alone again? The weight of the uncertainty was unbearable, and she could feel her composure slipping away with each passing second. The world around her seemed too bright, too loud, too overwhelming. She placed her order with shaky hands, barely able to concentrate on the words coming out of her mouth. By the time she sat down with her drink, the tears were already welling up in her eyes. She hated this feeling—the way her emotions seemed to take over, turning every minor issue into a catastrophe. It was exhausting, constantly feeling like she was on the edge of a breakdown. Lydia pulled out her phone and stared at Adam’s message again. This time, she couldn’t hold back the flood of emotions. She texted him, her fingers flying across the screen faster than she could think. “What do you mean we need to sort things out? Are you breaking up with me? I knew this would happen. I knew you couldn’t handle me anymore. Just tell me now so I can be prepared.” She hit send before she could stop herself. The instant regret washed over her. She wanted to take it back, to act like everything was fine, but it was too late. Now all she could do was wait, dread building with each passing second. Her phone buzzed. “Lydia, relax. It’s not what you think. Can we talk tonight? Please?” She clenched her jaw, her thoughts spiraling again. How could he ask me to relax? Doesn’t he understand? But that was the problem, wasn’t it? No one really understood what it was like for her—not Adam, not her friends, not even her family. They saw the intensity of her emotions, but they didn’t live inside her mind, where every thought felt like life or death. By the time she finished her drink, Lydia had already made up her mind. She would call her sister, Claire, the one person who had always been there, even when Lydia’s emotions spiraled out of control. Claire would know what to do, how to calm her down. Lydia dialed her number, heart pounding, fingers shaking. “Hey, Lyd,” Claire’s voice was warm and familiar, immediately grounding her. “What’s going on?” “I think Adam is going to leave me,” Lydia said, her voice trembling. “What makes you think that?” “He said we need to talk, and you know what that means. It means he’s done with me. He’s tired of dealing with my… my… moods.” “Lydia,” Claire sighed, “You need to breathe. You’re jumping to conclusions again.” “I’m not! I know how this works, Claire. People always leave.” “No, they don’t. You just have to trust that not everyone is going to abandon you. Look, talk to him tonight. Don’t assume the worst until you hear what he has to say.” Lydia swallowed hard, feeling the familiar frustration build up. Claire always made it sound so simple. But it wasn’t. Nothing about her emotions felt simple. “I can’t. I can’t do this. I can’t lose him,” Lydia whispered, her voice breaking. “You’re not going to lose him,” Claire reassured her. “Just take it one step at a time, okay? Call me after you talk to him.” Lydia nodded, even though Claire couldn’t see her. “Okay.” As she hung up the phone, Lydia felt the tightness in her chest loosen slightly, but the fear still lingered. Tonight could change everything. And once again, she felt like she was standing on the edge, unsure if she would fall or be pulled back to safety.
