Chapter One: The Kingdom's Desperation
PROLOGUE Eldoria Palace stood as a magnificent testament to the grandeur of the kingdom. Its towering spires reached toward the heavens, casting long shadows over the sprawling gardens below. Within its opulent walls, secrets whispered through the corridors, hidden behind every ornate tapestry and locked chamber. Vanora moved gracefully among the bustling servants, her steps light but purposeful. As a chambermaid in the palace, she had learned to blend into the background, to be a silent witness to the lives of the nobles who resided within these walls. But she held a secret that would forever change the course of Eldoria. Her heart quickened as she reached the secluded Chambermaid Quarters. It was here, away from prying eyes, that she could momentarily release the weight of her secret. Vanora entered her small chamber, closing the door behind her with a soft click. The room, though modest compared to the luxurious accommodations of the nobles, held an air of warmth and familiarity. She traced her fingers along the delicate lace drapes that adorned her bed, her mind consumed with the thoughts that had plagued her for months. A life grew within her, hidden from the world, a fragile secret that threatened to shatter the delicate balance of power in the kingdom. Lost in her own thought she remembered the events of that glorious night that had changed her entire life. Word had spread of the king's desperation for an heir, his failed attempts at securing the future of the dynasty. King ulthred had married queens from noble families far and wide, seeking the elusive blessing of a son. Yet, his efforts had been in vain. Vanora knew of the silent whispers that traveled from noble to noble, the questioning glances and the doubts that swirled within the court. But vanora possessed the knowledge that could change everything. Within her womb grew a gift that she had been blessed with by the spirit. A child conceived during a stolen moment of passion, a forbidden love that had bound her to the most powerful man in the kingdom. She had become the vessel of hope, the keeper of a secret that could restore the king's faith and secure the rightful successor to the throne. As she pondered the weight of her responsibility, a knock on the chamber door startled her from her reverie.Vanora's heart skipped a beat, fearing that her secret had been discovered. She composed herself, smoothing her skirt, and opened the door to find Lord William standing before her, his eyes filled with concern and unwavering loyalty. "My lady, we must talk," he said, his voice barely a whisper. In that moment, vanora knew she had found an ally, someone she could trust with her life and the life growing within her. Lord William had sworn his allegiance to her, promising to protect her and the unborn child at all costs. With a deep breath, vanora nodded to Lord William, a silent understanding passing between them. The time had come to reveal the secret, to face the consequences that awaited them within the court of Eldoria. She took one last glance at her chamber, her sanctuary, knowing that once the truth was unveiled, nothing would ever be the same again. As they ventured out of the Chambermaid Quarters and into the corridors of power, vanoras heart swelled with determination. The child's secret would no longer remain hidden in the shadows. She thought as she strode towards the heart of Eldoria, thinking about what awaits her and her unborn child. * * * * As the morning sun penetrated into vanora's bedchambers, she stretched trying to regain her strength from over working herself the previous day, just then her friend Emelia unbiddenly barged into her room not minding whether vanora had clothes on her. "Are you going to sleep all day,I am very sure you wouldn't want lady Lydia to still find you in bed.As a matter of fact, the king has left his bedroom for the court house". Vanora sprang up upon hearing her friends word and hurriedly went into the bathroom to clean up "oh! By the spirits you almost gave me a heart attack.I'll be returning to my duty post,so hurry up".Emelia declared with a smile and left her friends bedroom smiling. Vanora realized she had woken up late and Lydia was going to reprimand her and she wasn't ready for the woman's scolding as she hurriedly tidied herself and her bedchambers before heading out for the king's bedroom. Vanora took her time taking in the sight In front of her right after she had finished cleaning king ulthreds bedroom, she couldn't help but admire the large room that portrayed royalty. Vanora wished she was born a noble or even married to one at least she would have a taste of this beautiful life. She was so lost in her own thought that she didn't realize someone had walked in. "Who are you and what are you doing in here?". Vanora snapped out of her thought as she swirled around to see the owner of the voice, only to meet the gaze of the one person she had never expected to see. The king whose eyes, deep and captivating, shimmered like two pools of molten gold.were framed by thick, dark lashes that accentuated their brilliance. His gaze held a commanding presence, piercing through the souls of those who dared meet his stare. "Very well then chambermaid, you may leave the king wouldn't want to be disturbed" the person behind the king announced as he strode forward. Vanora was stunned for a moment as she realized it was the kings guard Sir Reynolds Montclair as far as vanora could recall sir Reynolds had been king ulthred's guard man even before he became king and no one dared to disobey or go against this fierce man that showed no feelings or emotions just like his father. His dark eyes which were deep and penetrating, with a certain intensity that could frighten anyone, gave vanora the chill which made her bow to the king and scurried out of the king's chambers. Outside the door she could recall the horror that emanated from the guardsman face, vanora shrugged as she shook the thoughts away and headed back to her bedchambers. Back at the king's chambers Reynolds informed king ulthred of the council members decision to discuss pressing matters with him which he obliged and told his guard to fix their meetings for the next day,the kings guard bowed and left the king to rest. The next morning at the court house, seated were powerful nobles selected by the king to assist him In the activities of the kingdom . As the king held court, a group of distinguished nobles gathered in the grand hall. Within the confines of the grand palace, the council voiced their concerns over the kingdom's plight. Advisors, nobles, and ministers gathered, discussing the pressing need for a legitimate successor to the throne. "We are most delightful to the king for honouring our invitation, thank you your majesty" countess Vivienne Ashford stated as she payed obeisance to the king going further to explain her reasons for the meeting. "The diplomatic emissary from veridora had payed me a visit yesterday, saying that they would like to withdraw from the alliance your majesty". Murmurs erupted in the hall as the nobles began to panic. "We cannot let this happen your majesty,if it does eldoria will fall" marquess William Kensington blurted out without thinking about his words which made the entire nobles stare at him in disbelief. "We cannot let this get to us at all,if veridora decides to opt out of the alliance then so be it,after all it is not the king's fault that he is unable to produce an heir".prince Frederick stated turning to the king for his final verdict King ulthred, burdened by his latest discovery remained unfazed by the threats that had come from veridora."Veridora has been under our protection for years now and they have become this prosperous because of the Starfire ore and most of our resources that we have been providing them,if that is what they wish for, I will gladly grant them their wish" king ulthred announced without worry. His sudden words and calm demeanor shocked everyone present except for duke Montclair who understood where the king was driving at."the king is right, eldoria is a powerful kingdom that will not tolerate threats of such" the general said looking undaunted. "Countess Ashford pay a visit to veridora and deliver my message as thus: Eldoria will close the border between Eldoria and veridora, removing it's defense from veridora,it supplies and also close up the Eldorium. And the withdrawal wouldn't be between Eldoria and veridora alone but with every kingdom that is in alliance with eldoria will withdraw her alliance, that will be all". The king said rising to his feet he concluded the meeting and left his nobles surprised,on the other hand prince Frederick never saw this coming as shock were visible in his face. He never thought his brother would take that risk, though veridora is protected by Eldoria, but if the alliance is cutoff then truly Eldoria will fall. But why does it seem like his brother and the duke has something up their sleeves,he was lost in his thoughts that he didn't realize everyone has left except for the palace guard who called out to him telling him that he needed to close the court house. He cleanched his jaw as anger filled him without thinking he stood from his seat and left the court house heading back to his home.
