Unexpected Encounter
Sophie Miller had never thought she’d be late for her own promotion review. But there she was, rushing down the marble corridors of Blackwell Enterprises, her heels clicking against the polished floor as she clutched her portfolio to her chest.
“Why today?” she muttered under her breath. Her coffee had spilled on her blouse, and now the once-pristine white fabric was a splotchy canvas of brown. She cursed herself forever, thinking that she could make a good impression.
As she reached the glass doors of the executive wing, she collided hard with someone. Papers flew into the air like startled birds.
“I’m so sorry!” Sophie gasped, scrambling to catch them.
The man she bumped into crouched to help, his dark suit immaculate despite the chaos. She looked up, her eyes and met a pair of piercing gray eyes that seemed to see right through her.
“You’re late,” the man said, his voice low but commanding.
Sophie froze. Something about him made her heart skip a beat. She recognized him immediately from the company’s website.
Ethan Blackwell, the CEO himself. The man whose reputation for ruthlessness was matched only by the aura of danger that seemed to cling to him like a second skin.
“I… I didn’t mean to,” Sophie began, but he held up a hand.
“Do you even know where you’re going?” he asked, standing. His eyes scanned her flustered face and the ruined portfolio. There was no warmth in his gaze, yet it wasn’t entirely unkind.
Sophie swallowed, embarrassed. “To the executive conference room… for my review. I’m Sophie Miller.”
He tilted his head, regarding her with an intensity that made Sophie feel like she was under a microscope. “Sophie Miller,” he repeated slowly, as if tasting her name. “And you think being late makes a good impression?”
“I—uh—I—” Sophie’s words tangled. Her face burned. She hadn’t imagined that meeting him would be so… overwhelming.
Ethan let out a short, amused laugh, sharp and controlled. “Come with me. I’ll escort you.”
She blinked. Escort me? That was unheard of. But there was no room for argument. She followed him silently through the corridor, her heels threatening to betray her with every step.
They entered the conference room, and Ethan’s presence filled it like a storm cloud. The board members who had been waiting for the meeting stared at Sophie with curious eyes, but she could barely focus.
Ethan stepped closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear. “You need to understand something, Sophie. In this building, timing is everything. And appearances… even more so.”
“Yes, sir,” she whispered, the weight of his gaze making her pulse race.
“Good,” he said, straightening. “Now go ahead with your presentation. Impress me.”
Sophie nodded, but as she moved to the podium, she couldn’t help stealing a glance at him. Ethan Blackwell, the man who commanded every room he entered, was leaning casually against the wall, watching her. Not the board. Not the others. Just her.
Her presentation began shakily, her voice quivering, her hands slightly trembling, but she forced herself to focus. Each slide, each point, each argument came out clearer as she remembered his words: “Impress me.”
By the time she finished, the room was silent. Sophie’s heart thumped wildly. She had survived the review. Barely.
Ethan approached her as the board members whispered among themselves. He stopped in front of her, eyes locked on hers, and Sophie felt a strange warmth despite the tension.
“You did well,” he said simply. “But don’t think that excuses your lateness.”
“I..... thank you, sir,” Sophie replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
Ethan’s lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. A dangerous, unreadable smile that made Sophie’s stomach flip.
“See me in my office tomorrow. Early. And bring that portfolio again, this time intact.”
Sophie nodded, unsure if her relief was because she had survived the review or because Ethan Blackwell had spoken to her without crushing her entirely.
As she walked back to her desk, she caught herself thinking: Why does he make me feel like my heart is betraying me?
Little did she know, their encounter was only the beginning. A single day, a single meeting, and Sophie’s ordinary life had already started to change forever.
