Chapter 12 :The Ghost Returns

1432 Words
6 months after Greece. Peace was a lie I told myself. The morning started like any other CEO morning. Coffee. Black. No sugar. Emails. 200 of them. And one envelope. No stamp. No return address. Just my name. Handwritten. Layla Alami I opened it. Inside: One photo. Me. At Adam’s school. Picking him up last Tuesday. And on the back, in red ink: `I SEE YOU` My coffee went cold. Selena was in my office in 2 minutes. "Show me." She looked at the photo. Her face went hard. "This is professional. Long lens. They knew your schedule." "Richard?" I asked. "Or someone new." She pulled out her phone. "We’re doubling security. Today." Rayhan walked in. Saw my face. "What happened?" I showed him. He didn’t yell. He didn’t panic. He just pulled me into his arms. "They don’t get to scare us. Not anymore." But I was scared. Because the last time I got a photo like this, Adam was taken. That night, I couldn’t sleep. At 3am, I went to Adam’s room. He was sleeping. Peaceful. Rayhan was in the chair next to the bed. Awake. Watching. "Can’t sleep either?" I whispered. "Never again," he said. "Not until he’s 30." We sat there. In silence. Until my phone buzzed. Unknown number. Video attachment. I pressed play. Richard. On a beach. In Greece. Tan. Smiling. Like he was on vacation. "Good morning, daughter," he said. "Did you like the photo? I thought it was time we talked. Face to face. Come alone. To the place where it all started. Alami Villa. Tonight. Midnight. Or I come to you. And bring friends. Your choice." The video ended. Rayhan grabbed the phone. Watched it twice. "We’re not doing what he says." "We have to," I said. "If I don’t go, he’ll hurt Adam." "Then I’m going with you." "No." I grabbed his face. "If he sees you, he’ll run. Or worse." "This is not up for debate, Layla." "It is." My voice was steel. "I’m the CEO. I’m the target. And I’m done letting men fight my battles." He stared at me. Then nodded. "Fine. But you wear a wire. And 10 agents are surrounding the villa. You go in for 5 minutes. Then we go in." "Deal." ALAMI VILLA. MIDNIGHT. The place where Grandma died. The place where Adam was almost blown up. Now it was the place where my father wanted to meet. Dark. Empty. Except for one light upstairs. I walked in. Alone. Heels clicking on marble. "Richard?" I called. "I’m here. Let’s talk." Footsteps. He appeared at the top of the stairs. Older. Grayer. But the same eyes as Rayhan. "My daughter," he said. "You grew up beautiful." "Cut the crap," I said. "What do you want?" "The company," he said simply. "51 percent. Signed over to me by Friday. Or I release photos. Videos. Of you. Of Adam. Of everything." "You don’t have anything." "Don’t I?" He smiled. "Ask your husband about Paris. Ask him about Clara. I have the real footage. Not the deepfake." My blood went cold. "That’s a lie." "Is it?" He pulled out a tablet. Pressed play. Video. Hotel room. 3 years ago. Rayhan. On the bed. With a woman. It looked real. I turned away. "Even if it’s real, it doesn’t matter. We’ve moved past it." "Has he?" Richard laughed. "Because I don’t think so. And I think the board would love to see this. A CEO who can’t even keep her husband loyal." I stepped closer. "You’re pathetic. You think money and blackmail make you powerful? You’re wrong. I built this company without you. I built my family without you. And you will never touch them again." He sighed. Like I was a child. "Layla. You have 48 hours. Then the world sees everything." He turned to leave. "One more thing," I said. "Who took the photo of me at school?" He stopped. Didn’t turn around. "Not me. I’m not the only one who wants you gone, sweetheart. Someone else is playing this game. And they’re better than me." Then he was gone. Out the window. Rope. Agents flooded in 10 seconds later. Too late. Back home at 2am. Rayhan was waiting. Pacing. "What did he say?" I told him. About the video. About Paris. He went pale. "It’s not what it looks like," he said. "I swear to God, Layla. I was drugged. I don’t remember anything." "I believe you," I said. "But the board won’t. And if this leaks, I lose the company." He pulled me to him. "Then we leak it first. On our terms. With the truth. With the proof you were drugged." I nodded. Crying. "I’m so tired of fighting." "I know," he whispered. "But we’re almost there. One more fight. Then it’s over. For good." 48 HOURS LATER. The video leaked. Not from Richard. From an anonymous account. `ALAMI_TRUTH` #RAYHANCHEATEDAGAIN #ALAMI CEO CAN'T CONTROL HER HOUSE Stock dropped 15 percent in 1 hour. Emergency board meeting. 10am. I walked in. Alone. 40 faces. Judging me. Marcus Kazan’s lawyer was there. On zoom. From prison. "Ms. Alami, do you have a statement?" I stood up. "Yes. The video is real. And it’s fake. 3 years ago, my husband was drugged and set up by Victoria Alami and Richard Alami. Here is the proof." I played 3 things: 1. The toxicology report from 3 years ago. Sedatives in his system. 2. Clara’s confession. On video. Paid by Richard. 3. My own statement. Recorded that morning. "I am not asking for your pity," I said. "I am telling you the truth. Because that’s what leaders do. Now, if you want to fire me, do it. But you’ll be firing the woman who increased profits 200 percent. The woman who survived 2 kidnappings and a war to keep this company alive." Silence. Then one board member clapped. Then another. `VOTE: LAYLA ALAMI REMAINS CEO. 38-2` I walked out. Head high. Rayhan was waiting outside. "Well?" "I won," I said. "But it’s not over. Richard said someone else is playing this game." His phone buzzed. Unknown number. Photo. Adam. At school. Today. With a red circle around him. And text: `HE'S MINE NEXT.` Rayhan crushed the phone. "Get Selena. Now." SCHOOL. 3PM. We got there in 8 minutes. Too late. Adam was gone. The principal was crying. "A man. Said he was his grandfather. Richard Alami. He had papers. We thought—" "Where are the cameras?" Selena barked. "They’re down. Since this morning." My world went black. Another text. Unknown number. `YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE. NOW I HAVE HIM. MEET ME. ALONE. THE VINEYARD. TONIGHT. BRING THE COMPANY. OR BRING A BODY BAG. - A FRIEND` Not Richard. Someone else. Rayhan was already loading his gun. "We’re going." "No," I said. "I’m going. Alone. This is about me. And I’m ending it." "Like hell you are." "Rayhan." I looked at him. "If anything happens to me, promise me you’ll take care of Adam. No matter what." He broke. Pulled me to him. "I promise. But nothing is happening to you. Because I’m not letting you go alone." At 11pm, we pulled up to the vineyard. Dark. Quiet. One light. In the middle of the field. And there he was. Not Richard. Not Marcus. A woman. In a wheelchair. `MARGARET ALAMI` Rayhan’s grandmother. Who we thought was dead. Again. And in her lap: Adam. Asleep. "Grandma?" Rayhan whispered. "What are you doing?" Margaret looked at me. Then at Rayhan. "I’m sorry," she said. "I had to do this. To see what you were made of." "What?" I said. "You kidn*pped my son?" "I did," she said. "Because the Alami family has a cancer. And it’s not Victoria. It’s not Richard. It’s weakness. And I needed to know if you were weak." She stood up. From the wheelchair. She could walk. "I’ve been watching you, Layla. For 6 months. You fought. You bled. You won. So I’m giving you a choice." She handed me a folder. "Inside: 51 percent of Alami Corp. Signed over to you. Fully. No board. No votes. Just you. All you have to do is sign this." She held out another paper. "Sign this, and Adam goes free. And you become the sole ruler of Alami. But sign this, and you agree to cut ties with Rayhan. Because an Alami cannot be weak. And love is weakness." The world stopped. Rayhan looked at me. No words. Adam stirred. "Mama?" I looked at the paper. Then at Rayhan. Then at Adam. And I made my choice. To Be Continued.
