Chapter 1: The Day They Called Me Trash
The rain was hitting the glass windows of ALAMI TOWER like bullets, hard enough to c***k the sky open. On the 88th floor, the world looked perfect. Clean. Rich. Untouchable. I was none of those things. I clutched the old leather folder to my chest so tightly my knuckles turned white. Inside were three years of scholarship records, perfect grades from a university I had paid for by cleaning tables at night, and one single letter. A letter from my dead grandmother. A letter nobody in this building knew existed. A letter that was worth two billion dollars. "Miss Layla?" The secretary looked at me like I was dirt on her expensive shoes. Her eyes scanned my simple white shirt, my wet hair, my cheap bag. She curled her lip. "Mr. Alami will see you now. You have five minutes. He is a very busy man, so do not waste his time." Five minutes. That was all I needed to destroy an empire. Five minutes was more than enough. The private elevator went up 88 floors without stopping. With every floor that passed, my heart beat harder and harder against my ribs, until I thought it would explode. Three years ago, I left this city with nothing but twenty dollars in my pocket and shame in my eyes. Three years ago, his family threw me out like garbage in the middle of the night when they found out I was pregnant with his child. I still remember every word. I still hear his aunt Victoria's voice in my nightmares. "She is not good enough for us, Rayhan. She is a maid's daughter. A gold-digger. Marry your cousin Selena. She is rich. She is family. She will give you heirs worthy of the Alami name." And Rayhan had said nothing. He just stood there and watched me leave. Ding. The elevator doors opened with a soft, expensive sound. And there he was. Rayhan Alami. The same black tailored suit that cost more than my rent for a year. The same cold, black eyes that never showed mercy. The same sharp jaw that could cut glass. He was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, on the phone, looking out at the city he owned. He did not even look up when I walked in, my shoes squeaking on his marble floor. "Tell Selena I will be at dinner. No, I do not care if she picked the flowers herself. And tell my aunt the deal with the Japanese is closed," he said into the phone, his voice low and commanding. Then he hung up. Finally, slowly, he looked at me. For one second, there was nothing on his face. Blank. Cold. The next second, his expensive Montblanc pen dropped from his hand and clattered onto the desk. "Layla." My name. In that deep, dangerous, familiar voice. The voice that had whispered my name a hundred times in the dark three years ago, when no one was watching, when I was still his secret. "What are you doing here?" he asked. His voice turned to ice in an instant. Cold. Distant. Like I was a stranger begging on the street. Like he had never touched me. I forced myself to stand straight. My legs were shaking, but I did not let him see it. My son Adam was at home with my sister, sleeping. He was three years old now. He had his father's eyes. I did not come here for Rayhan. I did not come here for love. Love died three years ago on that sidewalk. I came here for justice. "I am here to see the board," I said. My voice did not shake. I was proud of that. "I am here to claim what is rightfully mine." He laughed. One sharp, ugly, humorless sound that echoed in his huge office. "Claim what is yours? You mean the hush money my aunt gave you three years ago? The fifty thousand dollars you took and ran away with?" "No," I said calmly. I walked forward and put the folder on his desk, right on top of his billion-dollar contracts. "I mean forty percent of Alami Group." The room went completely silent. Even the rain seemed to stop. His eyes narrowed, dangerous. "You are lying. You are insane." "Open it." He stared at me for a long second, then ripped the folder open with angry hands. Inside was the will. Legal. Stamped by the Supreme Court. Signed and verified by three international lawyers. Signed by my grandmother, Amina Alami. The woman they called the crazy old lady and locked in a private villa for ten years so no one would hear her. The woman who was the original founder's only daughter. The woman whose shares they all thought had died with her, whose fortune they had already divided among themselves. Rayhan picked up the paper. His hands, those steady, powerful hands that signed billion-dollar deals without shaking, were shaking now. Violently. For the first time in my entire life, I saw Rayhan Alami afraid. Truly afraid. "This is fake," he whispered, but his voice had no power anymore. "It is not," I said, meeting his eyes without flinching. "And in forty-eight hours, the quarterly board meeting starts. I will be there. Not as your ex-lover. Not as the girl you threw out. As a shareholder. As your boss, Mr. Alami." He stood up so fast his black leather chair fell backward and hit the floor with a loud thud. He walked around the massive desk until he was inches from me. I could smell his cologne. The same expensive, dark cologne from three years ago. My body remembered it before my mind could stop it. "You think this changes anything?" he hissed, his face inches from mine, his eyes black with fury. "My family will destroy you, Layla. Selena will destroy you. You have no idea what you just walked into. This is not a game for scholarship girls." "Maybe not," I said, and for the first time in three years, I smiled at him. A real smile. Cold. "But I know one thing, Rayhan. You cannot touch me now. You cannot fire me. You cannot buy me. Because if you do anything to me, the whole empire falls. And your precious aunt Victoria will lose everything." His phone buzzed loudly on the desk, breaking the tension. The screen lit up: AUNT VICTORIA. Where are you. Dinner with Selena in 30 min. Do not be late. She is waiting. He looked at the message. Then at me. His jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would break. And for a second, just for one fraction of a second, I saw it through the anger. Guilt. Deep, painful regret. And something else that looked like heartbreak. "Get out," he said finally, his voice hoarse. I turned to leave, my heart hammering. At the door, my hand on the cold handle, I stopped. "Oh, and Rayhan?" I turned back to look at him one last time. He was standing in the middle of his perfect office, looking completely destroyed. "One more thing you should know," I said softly. "The boy... my son... he has your eyes. Exactly your eyes." I walked out and did not look back. I closed the door behind me. Behind me, I heard the sound of glass shattering against the wall. The war had just begun.
