JEMIMAH sat down on her couch in her apartment in Taguig. She just got home. Until now, she couldn’t believe she was going to have her own investigation team. A lot would raise their eyebrows for sure but she wouldn’t mind that. She was chosen by the director of SCIU. It was a big honor, a big opportunity. And that was all that mattered. She rested for a while on the couch before taking a shower. She was about to prepare dinner when she heard a knock on the front door. Her place was just a typical apartment, simple and not that big. But it came from her own money so she was proud of it. Jemimah opened the door and saw her parents—her father Chad and mother Roslyn. Behind the two was her younger brother, Marky. She smiled widely and greeted her family. “We came here because you’re not visiting us anymore,” said her mother. “We’re going to have dinner here too.” Jemimah looked down at the paper bags her family brought. Those were her mom’s cooking for sure. “I’m really sorry, I have lots of reports and work these past few weeks.” “Since you worked in that new job, you’ve been very busy, Jemimah,” her father, Chad, noticed. “Isn’t it enough that you joined the police force even if it’s dangerous? Do you need to add more danger?” Jemimah rolled her eyes. “Here we go again, Papa. Nothing bad happened to me. And your job is also dangerous, right?” Her father was a lawyer and his clients were mostly big people in the society. Her mother was a housewife. “Working for SCIU is a very dangerous job, Jemimah,” Chad said. “You’re all looking for murderers. Serial killers, to be exact.” “I haven’t hold a serial killing case, `Pa,” she reasoned. Jemimah walked towards the kitchen to prepare the table. Her mother and brother followed. “Bear with your father, Jemimah,” her mother said softly. “He’s just worried about you.” Jemimah just nodded, taking out plates from the cupboard. Her mother went back to the living room. “How’s your studies, Marky?” she asked her brother. Marky was in college, taking up Computer Science course. “It’s fine,” Marky replied while helping her prepare the table. He chuckled. “I have a new girlfriend.” She looked at him sharply. “You kept on changing girls every month.” Jemimah shook her head. Marky smirked. “How about you? When are you planning to get a boyfriend? You’re turning twenty-nine this year, right? I might get ahead on marriage.” “I’m happy this way, Marky. Just mind your own life.” Her brother just laughed at it. “How about home?” she asked. Marky sat down on one of the dining chairs before answering. “It’s fine.” He shrugged. “It’s just that Papa was always busy at work so he arrives late at night.” Jemimah saw her parents entering the kitchen so she didn’t ask any more questions. They ate dinner together. “How’s your work in SCIU, Jemimah?” her mother asked. She smiled. “I’ll be managing my own team starting tomorrow,” Jemimah happily informed. She talked about her conversation with Director Morales this afternoon. “Well, that’s… good,” Roslyn commented. Her father sighed. Jemimah stopped talking. She knew her father was still not happy with her chosen profession despite how many years had passed. After more than an hour, her family left. Jemimah went inside her room. She took a folder from the installed cabinets on the wall—the folder Director Morales gave her a while ago. Inside it was information about her team members. She sat on the queen-sized bed and began reading the profiles. Jemimah noticed that she already met some of the members in SCIU headquarters. Michel Ramos, male, 29, profiling expert. PO1 Douglas Ilagan, male, 26, police officer. It was a good thing to have someone in the police force too. She kept on reading. Paul Morales, male, 31, prosecutor. “Morales,” Jemimah murmured. Was he a relative of Director Morales? She stared at the photo of the man. He had similarities on the SCIU Director. Why would a prosecutor be part of their team? She shook her head. She would ask Director Morales tomorrow. Jemimah opened the last page. There was no picture of the last member of their team. Ethan Maxwell, male, 33, private detective, ex-commander for Special Forces. Jemimah got curious. A private detective? She didn’t know that SCIU could hire a private detective. And she never heard of this man’s name. Ethan Maxwell was an ex-commander for Special Forces, he was just thirty-three years old. The man must had extra-ordinary skills. She closed the folder. Jemimah was still lost. She didn’t know her team members and she was the only woman there. Jemimah shook her head. Director Morales trusted her to lead a team. She needed to do her best for this job. She prayed that everything would be alright tomorrow.
