Jemimah Remington's POV Special Criminal Investigation Unit Headquarters JEMIMAH looked up from the report she was reading when she felt someone’s presence near her. She saw one of her colleague—PO1 Douglas Ilagan. The man saluted. As far as she could remember, this man was new in this agency. “Inspector, Director Morales wants to talk to you,” PO1 Ilagan informed. Jemimah nodded. She went to the Director’s Office with curiosity. Antonio Morales was SCIU’s Director. Jemimah had been working as a police inspector in Philippine National Police for more than seven years. On her fifth year of serving in the police force, she was recruited to work for SCIU—a private government agency that handled special murder cases in the country. She didn’t know about the SCIU until a high official in the PNP explained the purpose of the agency. It was an honor to work in this special unit because as far as she knew, only the ‘best’ in the field of criminology had the opportunity to be recruited for SCIU. Jemimah’s parents opposed at her decision of becoming a police officer, but they couldn’t do anything about it. This was what she wanted. She wanted to become a part of the government and help others as much as she could. Training for the police force was not easy. It was a good thing she was used to physical fights since she was a kid. Jemimah was a black-belter in tae kwon do. She had learned judo and boxing as well, but she just learned handling guns when she trained for the police, and she admitted that she was not that good at it. Jemimah knocked on the door of the director’s office. “Come in,” she heard Director Morales’ voice from inside. Jemimah went inside the office and saluted. Director Antonio Morales was in his late forties. He was already sitting in that position since she began her work here in SCIU. “You asked for me, Sir?” The director’s seat was the second highest position in SCIU. She hadn’t met the chairman in personal yet, Jemimah only heard his name—Chairman Tony Gonzalvo, an ex-general for the Philippine Army. Director Morales nodded, standing up from his swivel chair. “Inspector Remington, I know you’re one of the best inspectors around despite you being a woman. And that’s also the reason why you were recruited in this special unit. I really admire you for that.” “Thank you so much,” she replied with sincerity. “You know it’s an honor to work for SCIU, and become a leader of a team.” The director looked at her, smiling. “I’m assigning you to lead a new team for SCIU, Inspector Remington. And it will be under me.” A team? Jemimah couldn’t hide her shock. Special Criminal Investigation Unit was composed of different teams in order to divide the cases and solve it fast. And in her two years working for the agency, the chief was the only one who could make new teams if needed. She didn’t know that even the director do it. “I-Isn’t it right to give it to the senior inspectors here first? I’m only here for a few years—” “I’m choosing you, Remington,” Director Morales cut her. Jemimah bowed her head. It wouldn’t be easy to have an own team and hold special cases. Yes, she felt honored. But she was nervous. “I… I don’t know if I can reach your expectations, Sir,” she admitted. A team? Under the SCIU Director? Even when she was still in the PNP, she hadn’t got a chance to hold a team. Director Morales chuckled. “I won’t choose if I knew you don’t deserve it.” The director walked towards her and tapped her shoulder. “I studied your works here, also your works in PNP. For seven years, lots of criminals had been caught because of your help, including that politician drug lord. It was one of the biggest cases solved by the PNP. I asked for a report of that case and I learned that you made a big contribution on it. Some of my acquaintance in the PNP told me that too.” Jemimah kept her eyes on the floor; she didn’t know what to say. That politician drug lord case was one of the biggest case she worked on. “And you never took credit for it,” Director Morales continued. “Credit is not important for me, Sir,” she replied. “What’s important for me is to reveal the truth and help people in need.” Director Morales chuckled again. “That’s why I’m choosing you. Because you’re not like the other agents here who only want recognition and promotions. I want someone who’s not selfish, not arrogant. A person who only wants to do her job well. A person I can trust.” The director walked back to his desk and sat down on the swivel chair. “Don’t you want an own team?” “It’s not like that, Sir,” Jemimah said. “I’m honored. Thank you, Sir.” She saluted. “I will give my all to do well in all the works that’ll be given to my team.” Director Morales nodded. “I’ll announce your team tomorrow.” He took one folder on the table and gave it to her. “Here are the names and profile of your team members. You can read this at home. You’re always welcome to ask me questions if you want to want to know anything.” Jemimah thanked the director. She couldn’t explain the excitement in her heart at the thought of holding a team. She hoped their team would become strong, and she would be able to connect with the members. Since she began working for the police force, she never had a chance to find real friends. Even in SCIU. Almost everyone in the agency was focused on their works. It was boring for her at first, but she got used to it. “You will report to me directly, Inspector Remington. You can come up with any name you want for your team. I hope your team becomes the best in this agency,” said the director. “You may go now.” Jemimah saluted again before leaving the office. Everyone was about to go home at that time. She went back to her desk, cleaned it up. Tomorrow their team would have their own office too. She couldn’t help but smile at the thought.
