4. Mate

2130 Words
Zander's POV. Upon entering the house party, my wolf began to stir within me. I ignored whatever was bothering my wolf as I had had a big day with my father comparing me with my younger brother. I felt stressed, especially when my father always said my brother acts more mature than me. Don’t get me wrong, but I loved my brother Milo. It was at times like this that my father would compare how much harder work he was and all I did was party and get with girls. He was right, but I was still young and just wanted to live my life before I took over as Alpha. It stirred a lot of anger in me, anger that I felt not towards my father but my brother. We were like another sibling with sibling rivalry. The only thing was we still cared for each other. Despite the arguments and fights we would have, we both cared for each other. And all of it was because I am to be Alpha when my father steps down and he is basically the spare. I knew he hated it, that he was known as the spare, but whenever he really pissed me off, that was when I would call him the spare. A scent had taken me out of my thoughts as I wandered through the crowd. Again my wolf stirred within me and this time it was from the fresh scent of citrus. Immediately, I pushed through the crowd and, like I was under a spell, I followed the scent. That was when I went out to the back to the poolside, where I was originally heading to my people. I followed the scent of fresh citrus and saw a girl who sat with her back facing towards me. I couldn’t see much, just her brown hair from the back. I did, however, notice that she was seated beside my brother Milo. I felt anger begin to bubble up within me and my wolf felt the same. Although I didn't show any expression on my face, a young male wolf that stood with his friends just an arm's reach from me sensed my anger and left. I knew they were in my pack and that they didn’t want to be within reach of me with the anger that was radiating from my body. I never once broke eye contact with the girl that sat beside my brother. I did, however, come back to my senses when I heard a familiar voice. "Curtis stop looking at the girls like that! You are making them uncomfortable!" The voice belonged to Stephanie. "They are too womanly for you!" She added and he put his hands up in surrender. I was grateful for her words as I was now heading directly over to give Curtis my piece of mind. "Thanks." I was unfamiliar with the voice but it sounded like an angle. "Look but not touch! Right?" Curtis said smiling. "Not to make you ladies uncomfortable, but you deserve to be stared at for your beauty." He winked at the girl he was speaking to and my wolf wanted to tear him apart there and then. "That’s enough Curtis!" I said in a warning tone, it was a threat to him and he knew it. I wasn’t going to let one of my warriors talk like that to this unknown girl I was sniffing out. I looked at the girl and immediately her golden brown eyes made contact with mine. Mate! My wolf said to me and I was shocked at his words. I had to use every fibre in my body to not show a reaction to what my wolf had said. The fresh scent of citrus was coming off her body even stronger now that I stood at just arm's length. It didn’t escape me that she was clearly checking me out from head to toe. "Yes... " Curtis seemed to have lost his confidence as I felt his eyes look everywhere else but the girl that I discovered as my mate. “As a matter of fact, go away,” I said calmly and Curtis obeyed. “Sorry about him, he has an addiction to women,” I added, it was true he did, but maybe I should have said that, since I may have the same problem. “Don’t all men do?” The brown-haired girl blurted out, she clearly wasn’t thinking when she spoke, her face said it all. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say that out loud.” She added as her eyes opened wide with shock. “I guess you're quite right.” I agreed with her. I didn’t mean to agree with her, the words just came out on their own. “Gina, Yara,” Milo said, all the while staring at me. “This is my big brother, Zander.” He introduced me. “Brother, these are my two best friends, Gina and Yara." He pointed at each girl and now I knew my mate as Yara. "Tell everyone that they are my girls.” Milo seemed to have given me a message with my wolf didn’t like. "Don’t even think about going with them," Milo said in the mind-link that we share. "Relax brother," I replied in the link as I looked at Yara. Milo left me alone after our chat via mind-link. I, however, never took my eyes off Yara and I didn’t want to. The sight of her was like an addiction that I had only known for about twenty minutes. The fresh citrus scent had my wolf pouching around in my head and I could quite tell if I was annoyed or if I just agreed with him. I groaned inwardly after staring at Yara for goddess knows how long and it was all because I had just now realised that she is human. My mate, my gift from the moon goddess, my future Luna, was a human. I didn’t know how to feel about that fact about her, but I knew one thing for sure. How will my pack even follow me as Alpha if my mate is a human? I asked myself and instantly my wolf spoke. It doesn't matter! She is ours! Anyone has a problem with that and they will have to deal with me! My wolf basically growled out every word. She was beautiful, her brown hair, her golden brown eyes with those pink lips that looked so delicious. I wanted to grab her and just kiss those lips of hers, but here and now wasn’t the time for that. Even though I saw my mate as perfect for me, there was one thing that was nagging at me. Of course, my wolf and I were one. That meant he knew what I was really thinking about my human mate. I know for a fact that humans are weak... are weak. I didn’t want to have to be worried about my mate the second I turned my back on her, but at the same time, I didn't ever want to take my eyes off of her. “Brother,” Milo said, taking me out of my thoughts. I felt him glaring at me so I couldn’t even be bothered to look at my brother. Especially not when I had someone better to look at. “Yes, brother,” I answered casually while still staring at Yara. “Do you mind?” Milo asked me as he put an arm around my mate and pulled her closer to him. The second he did that, I broke my stare from my mate and glared at Milo. I didn’t like it, both I and my wolf were ready to attack my brother for touching what was ours. “You do know your eye f*****g my friend?” Milo spoke rather harshly to me. That’s when it dawned on me that I didn’t even notice that my staring at her, she was uncomfortable with it. I heard my mate's heart racing and I could smell the anxiety coming off her as it mixed with her scent of fresh citrus. “I actually don’t mind,” I stayed calm as I replied to Milo. I had every right to stare, Yara was mine to look at and so that is exactly what I was going to do. I casually and calmly relaxed back into my seat. I noticed that Yara was trying not to look at me all the while I continued to stare at my mate. “I’m sure she doesn’t either,” My last words seemed to startle Yara as she turned and stared at me with widened eyes. “Well, she does!” My brother stood from his seat. “You just told Curtis off from starting and now you're doing it!” He yelled, causing people at the party to turn and look in our direction. I mirrored his actions and stood up from my seat. “I’m not a pervert like Curtis,” I smirked at Milo and it wasn't from what I said but because I was glad he no longer had his arms around my mate. “Like that explains why you are eye-f*****g one of my best friends!” Milo whispered, only for me to hear, but everyone near him, including my mate, had heard him. “So what are you going to do about it?” I asked challengingly. “Stop it!” Milo growled out in warning to me. I never broke eye contact with Milo as he let out another low growl in warning. I noticed Yara in the corner of my eyes searching for who or what made the sound. No doubt she doesn't know about werewolves, since there were not any dogs at this house. It happened so quickly but I saw it coming, my brother connected his fist with my face. I may have seen it coming, but since we're both Alphas, we are both fast, hence how he managed to connect me with his fist without me defending myself. I lost my balance from my brother's hit but I quickly returned the favour to Milo's face. I was too enraged to even notice anyone calling out, but I faintly heard voices underneath my rage. I was more focused on beating my brother as payment for having his hand on my mate and telling me that I couldn't look at what was mine. My Wolf wanted to teach Milo a lesson, to teach him who is the one that is strong and more fit to be Alpha. It may be a fight about my mate, but my built-up anger made me feel like it was also the fact that Milo could be Alpha, since my father sees him as more mature. I was so focused on hurting my brother that I hadn't noticed that my mate was just behind Milo. I tried to pull back the punch I had thrown at Milo the second my mate came into view. I thought that if I hit Milo he would collide with my mate but... Instead, my fist connected with my mate's shoulder. Upon impact, I felt the sparks of the mate bond as well as her shoulder being moved out of place. If I hadn't pulled back I would definitely have broken something. But the scream that left her mouth didn’t make what I did any better and the guilty feeling that crept within me only made me feel terrible for my actions. “Yara, I’m sorry!” I was panicking that I had harmed my mate. I wanted to go to her and comfort her, but before I could even move, Milo pushed me away. I began to feel more than guilt for what I did. I felt embarrassed that I had harmed my mate. Harming my mate was something that I should never have done. Protecting my mates is my job. I ran over into the shadows and made sure no one saw me leave. I wasn’t going to leave my mate, I was going to watch her until she leaves this party. The second she does, I'll make sure she gets home safe, even if she leaves with my brother. As I watched my brother attend to my mate, that’s when I realised that I was right about one thing. Humans are weak. If I'm to be Alpha and have her as my mate, I will have to turn her into a wolf. I'm an Alpha, it is something I can do. I don’t care if it's forbidden to do it, I will turn my mate and she will be my strong Luna. I will have to bite my human mate.
