Yara's POV. "Zander is gone, so you can stay," Stephanie said, looking at us with half a smile. "Fine" I sighed. "But I need a drink." Milo helped me stand up. "And maybe a few shots." I tested my shoulder, the pain was definitely gone. "Damn girl!" It was Curtis' voice. "You got punched by Zander Remus and didn’t go running for the hills?" He sounded rather impressed, I didn’t understand why he was impressed that I had gotten punched in the shoulder by Zander. "Curtis!" Milo was still angry and he was about to take it out on Curtis. "Walk away!" He basically commanded him. Curtis looked down at the ground and walked off towards the house, again. "We can play beer pong?" Stephanie suggested and we all nodded in agreement. We all followed Stephanie and her two red-haired friends. They both wore the same dress, an emerald green midi dress. They both wore silver heels to go with their dresses. They were identical twins, so I couldn't tell who was who. I looked at Stephanie who was wearing a hot pink sequin dress and white heels. She looked like a real-life Barbie doll. I couldn’t even believe that she was even hanging out with me. "Move! Shoo be gone." She said once we got to the ping pong table. Everyone that was just playing at the table left immediately. I felt bad for them. We just took over their game. Everyone that sat by the pool side followed to play the game. Taking new seats around the table, the twins placed new red cups on both sides of the table. Curtis came back to join the group. He seemed to have brought several alcohol bottles with him. Milo grabbed some from him and so did Stephanie. They began to pour short amounts into the cuts while making a mix in some. "Curtis, no flirting or any inappropriate words are to be said during this game," Milo warned. I could see that he didn’t like him that much and I didn’t know why. "Yara, you can be with me," Stephanie said, motioning me to her side of the table. "You too, Gina, it's girls versus boys." As she said that, three of the boys stood behind Milo and Curtis, joining their team. "Ladies first," Curtis said, handing over three ping-pong balls. Stephanie went first and managed to get her ball in one of the cups, causing Milo to drink. Then Milo had his turn, causing one of the twins to drink. It didn’t take long before I got my turn and we all just continued to take turns as we drank the drinks the balls landed in. Everyone was now laughing, joking, telling stories and drinking. The mood had changed from what it was before when the brothers fought each other. "We are out of drinks." Milo slurred his words, standing up and going to get more. I looked at Stephanie, who motioned for me and Gina to sit down. I looked in the direction that Milo had gone in, then looked back at Stephanie. "Why did no one stop Milo and Zander from fighting earlier?" I almost didn't recognise my voice as I was clearly drunk. Everyone went quiet and that’s when I realised that they heard me or had I just spoken too loud. Everyone had their eyes on me, and Stephanie looked around glaring at everyone to stop staring. They went back to their conversation and drank their last bit of alcohol while waiting for Milo to return with more. "It is a sibling thing, they are always fighting each other for some small or big reason. As most siblings do," She began. "They are almost always challenging each other for something. Everyone has just learned to let them be and not get in the way." She said. "Why are they always challenging each other?" I asked, still not understanding why. She sighed before looking around, "Their father is very rich," that I knew about Milo but, of course, I didn’t know he had a brother. "and, like all rich parents, their eldest child would take over everything they own. Of course, that is Zander. He is the heir to it all, but he isn't exactly the responsible brother. He likes to party and sleep around, whereas Milo studies hard and... well, respects women too much to sleep around." It didn’t pass me when she seemed a bit upset when she described Zander. "No one says it out loud but Zander is the heir to everything and his parents know that. Milo is... in the words of Zander, the spare. Zander was supposed to take over when he turned eighteen but his father didn’t like his behaviour. His father basically told him to get his act together before Milo turns twenty-one. That is when his father would either give him or Milo, depending on who is more mature.” She explained. "So you are saying that they always fight like this?" I asked and she nodded her head. "Let's take more shots!" It was Milo who shouted as he came back with two tequila bottles. I took my shot and placed it on the table. I reached into my purse and took out my phone. As I turned it on I saw the time was four in the morning. My eyes widened in shock. I had lost track of time. I hadn't realised that we were still partying. I looked around, well I tried to look around. I was so drunk I could hardly focus. I squinted my eyes together to try and focus but I couldn’t see clearly. I was definitely seeing doubles for those close to me and blurs for others around me. My two friends were just here. Now they were gone. I stood from my seat stumbling as I walked around looking for Gina and Milo. Everyone was now so drunk to the point that people were making out everywhere. I made my way into the house to look for them. Again I had managed to see people making out. Just as I was heading into the lounge room I saw Gina's brown curly hair. I walked over getting ready to reach out to her when I stood in my tracks. Oh my god! Gina was making out with someone and I didn’t know if I should interrupt them or not. Maybe this was a good time to get her, find Milo and go home. I did have work in the morning. I was about to grab Gina, but she pulled back a bit to get some air in before kissing again. And that was when I saw who she was making out with. It was Milo. Gina and Milo were making out! My two best friends were making out! Did they always have the hots for each other? And I was just too blind to not notice? I mean I was blind without my glasses and contact lens, but I mean, metaphorically speaking. I definitely didn’t want to break up their kiss, that would be awkward. Although I was shocked that they were kissing, I decided to just leave them be. I would just walk home, it was only about half an hour to the college and then about another ten to my apartment. It'll be fine, I thought to myself. As I walked out of the house and passed the lawn, I felt like I had become a bit sober. Not from the walk but the shocking state I was in when I saw Gina and Milo making out on that sofa. I pulled out my phone and noticed that I had been walking for about twenty minutes now. Not long now before I can get into bed. My queen-sized bed was calling me so I could have the sleep of my life. I smiled at that thought. I was exhausted from the party. Or maybe it was from over-working myself with my studies. Either way, the few drinks I had tonight definitely relaxed me and took a little stress off my shoulders. I had now passed the college grounds and my smile grew wider knowing that I was almost home. I just had to walk through the park to make it to my comfy bed. Just as I walked through the park I felt a shiver run down my spine. Something didn’t feel right. I stopped and looked around to see if maybe someone was following me. But I couldn’t see anything in the dark and the sunlight wouldn't start rising for at least another two hours. Plus, I was still a bit too drunk. I squinted my eyes and searched around again. My body felt like it sensed a ghost in the dark somewhere. I knew it couldn’t literally be a ghost. Well, I hope not. I turned around one more time before I began walking again. But as I took just one step in my direction, I heard a twig snap. I turned around and, to my horror, I saw something on all fours slowly coming out of a huge pile of bushes. I didn’t completely want to see whatever the hell was on all fours as every fibre in my body screamed at me to run. So that’s what I did. I ran. And let me tell you I am not an athlete. I don’t do sports or anything that involves the outdoors. I was more of an indoor person. However, I didn’t let that stop me from running. I ran so fast like I never had before. My life deepened on it, this was a life or death situation. I wasn’t about to die after everything I had worked hard to get where I was. I was about a minute or two from reaching the road when I stupidly decided to look behind me. The second I did, I felt something knock me over. I fell face first on the ground and felt warm breathing on the back of my neck. I heard a slight ringing in my ears as I tried to make sense of my surroundings. I slowly lifted my head and it didn’t go unnoticed that something stood over me. I cautiously turned my head and saw a huge black dog that towered over me. I was too afraid to move a muscle. Too afraid to scream for help. I didn't think anyone would even be awake at that time. Besides those that were intoxicated and partying. I stared at the huge dog and it stared back at me. His breathing was so heavy that every breath he took sounded like a growl. I slowly looked around as I turned onto my back slowly. My heart was beating so fast in my chest that I feared it would explode. My eyes caught sight of a stick right next to the huge paw of the dog. I looked at the dog and it seemed to slowly back away from me. As it did, I didn’t hesitate to move and get the stick. It was the only thing I could think of to use as a weapon to protect myself. However, I wasn’t fast enough. The dog had come at me, possibly knowing that I was going to use the stick to hit him. Before I even got the chance to pick it up, the dog bit me. I screamed out in pain from its bite as I instinctively pulled my arm away, holding it to my chest. I stood as fast as I could and ran without looking back this time. I had managed to make it to the road that my apartment was on. I looked at my surroundings and thank god the dog didn’t decide to chase me. I stopped under the streetlight to look at the bite wound on my right arm. It was bleeding so much. I held it against my chest and ran to my apartment. I ran up the stairs and didn’t stop until I got to my door, struggling to open it while holding my bleeding arm, I slammed it shut once it opened. I went straight into my bathroom and tried to clean the wound with warm water. I hope that it won’t get infected by the morning. I cleaned it as best as I could and wrapped it in a bandage. I took off my dress as I felt my body begin to sweat uncontrollably. Then I felt cold overcome my entire body. I crawled into my bed and pulled my blanket over me. I knew I was having hot and cold flushes but was it from fear or the infection that could be starting already? I have never in my life seen a dog that huge before. It was the biggest dog I have ever seen. I closed my eyes and replayed what had happened and prayed to god it wasn’t a rabid dog. That it didn’t have any sort of disease that could be transmitted to humans. My breathing began to slow and before I knew it, I was welcomed by the calming darkness...
