CHAPTER THREE
Anna’s POV
The next morning, just as I walked to my locker, someone shoved me roughly against it.
I looked up.
Evan.
Of course.
I knew he wouldn’t let yesterday go.
“E–Evan…” I stuttered, trembling. All the courage I had gathered yesterday had completely vanished.
“Listen, little kitten,” he said coldly. “I’m willing to forget what you said yesterday. We can start over. I’ll pretend you were temporarily insane when you said you wouldn’t listen to me anymore.”
“You’re crazy! I meant what I said. I won’t be pushed around anymore!” I replied, trying to sound firm, though my voice trembled.
“Hmm… little kitten has some guts now,” he smirked, grabbing my hair.
“Please… let me go,” I whispered, trying to free myself.
“What are you doing with this b***h, Evan?” a voice purred.
Melissa.
She walked toward us gracefully, her heels clicking against the floor.
She had hated me from the very first day. As the school cheerleader, she was proud, arrogant, and always looking for someone to look down on.
Her father was one of the richest men in the pack, and rumors said she was Evan’s girlfriend.
But I knew better.
She was the one chasing him—not the other way around.
“So pathetic,” she scoffed, eyeing me with disgust.
“Please let me go. I’ll be late for class,” I pleaded, my eyes fixed on Evan.
Unfortunately… we were in the same class.
“Hey, man,” Ben called, walking toward us.
My heart sank.
Ben was Evan’s best friend—the Beta’s son. Just as cruel. Just as dangerous.
Together, they made my life a nightmare.
“Oh, Nerdy is here,” Ben smirked.
Thankfully, the hallway was almost empty now. Most students had already gone to class.
“Please… let me go,” I begged again.
“Not so fast, kitten,” Evan said, clearly enjoying this.
“Man, we’re going to be late. Let’s leave her for now,” Ben said, patting Evan’s shoulder.
Evan finally released me—only to shove me roughly.
My books scattered across the floor.
I bent down to pick them up, but Ben kicked one away, laughing.
“Aren’t you supposed to say thank you for saving your fat ass?” he sneered.
“Thank you,” I muttered, my voice shaking.
Evan stared at me for a moment… then turned and walked away with Ben.
“Weak,” Melissa scoffed before flipping her hair and leaving.
I wiped my tears quickly and picked up my books—including the one Ben had kicked away.
Sometimes, I wondered if I was truly as weak as they said.
But what power did I have?
I was just a poor human girl.
No one feared me.
No one cared.
I dusted off my skirt and hurried toward class.
I could already hear Mr. Marley teaching.
Oh no.
I was late.
Mr. Marley hated lateness.
I took a deep breath, whispered a quick prayer, and pushed the door open.
All eyes turned to me.
“Miss Anna, care to explain why you’re late?” Mr. Marley asked, adjusting his glasses.
“Uhm…” I hesitated, my eyes briefly meeting Evan’s.
He stared at me, silently daring me to say something.
“I had stomach cramps… I had to use the restroom,” I lied.
Mr. Marley sighed. “I don’t tolerate lateness, but I’ll let this slide.”
“Thank you, sir,” I said in relief.
“Aww, poor Nerdy had cramps. Could it be that time of the month?” someone mocked.
The class burst into laughter.
I lowered my head and moved to sit beside a blonde girl.
“Don’t sit with me, trash,” she snapped, placing her bag on the seat.
I froze.
“Miss Anna, find somewhere to sit,” Mr. Marley said, already turning back to the board.
“Hey, you can sit with me,” a voice said gently.
I turned.
A boy.
He looked new.
He had curly brown hair and warm chestnut eyes.
“Thank you,” I said shyly as I sat beside him.
“I’m Charles. And you are?” he asked with a smile.
My heart skipped.
No one had ever spoken to me like this before.
“Anna,” I replied softly.
I quickly looked back at my book and started writing.
Don’t get used to this, my mind warned. They’ll turn on you too.
But Charles didn’t ask more questions.
Still… I felt uneasy.
Like someone was burning holes into my back.
I turned slightly.
Evan.
His jaw was clenched, his eyes dark with anger.
I quickly faced forward again.
Class felt longer than usual.
The moment the bell rang, I packed my books and rushed out.
“Anna! Wait!” someone called.
I turned.
Charles.
“Where are you rushing to?” he asked, smiling.
“Nowhere,” I replied, nervously scanning the hallway.
“What if… we became friends?” he asked, scratching his head.
I froze.
Friends?
No boy had ever asked me that before.
“I–I…” I stammered.
He chuckled softly.
“It’s okay. I’m moving too fast. Let’s just be classmates for now.”
I smiled a little. “Okay.”
He extended his hand.
I hesitated… then slowly reached for it—
But suddenly—
I was yanked backward into a hard chest.
“Stay the hell away from her.”
Evan’s voice was low.
Dangerous.
