Vanessa was nearly beside herself with rage!
She had never imagined that Sienna, a woman from an ordinary background, would dare mock her again and again.
She wanted to retaliate, but for once, no words came.
Judging by her reaction, Sienna had clearly guessed at least part of the truth.
Not that it mattered anymore.
'After all, Ethan is perfectly happy to be Vanessa's willing rebound, isn't he?'
Sienna packed the belongings she had left in her office and walked out without another pause.
She had never liked the job in the first place. In a way, leaving was a relief!
She had only herself to blame for being foolish enough to think she had found true love, and for abandoning the work she loved most for that man.
As she left the company, her colleagues tried to persuade her to stay.
They hated to see her go and wanted to give her a proper farewell.
No one knew when they might all be together again, so they decided to have one last dinner as a team.
That evening, after settling Zoey at home, Sienna arrived at the restaurant on time.
She had barely entered the private dining room when Ethan appeared in the doorway with Vanessa on his arm.
Sienna stopped short. She had expected a simple farewell dinner. She had not known the two of them would be there.
Vanessa spoke in a sweet, playful voice, "Sienna, you're here too! I thought you wouldn't come to my welcome party!"
'Vanessa's welcome party? Isn't this supposed to be my farewell dinner?'
Her gaze swept instinctively across her colleagues.
They avoided her eyes, their expressions awkward and embarrassed.
Rachel quickly leaned closer and whispered. "It's not what you think, Sienna. We didn't expect things to turn out this way either..."
Apparently, when her colleagues had arrived together that evening, they had run into Vanessa on her way out.
After learning they were going to dinner, Vanessa had eagerly invited herself along. Ethan had been standing beside her, leaving everyone too uncomfortable to refuse.
But none of them had ever called it a welcome party!
Sienna understood at once. This was another one of Vanessa's schemes.
Weariness swept over her, taking her appetite with it.
She started to rise, unwilling to remain in such a distasteful atmosphere.
Vanessa spoke again, "Look at me, I completely forgot to ask what Sienna likes to eat. Even though you're leaving, I should still thank you for everything you've contributed to the lab. Consider tonight my treat, a little going-away dinner for you!"
She placed deliberate emphasis on the words going-away, her voice laced with false regret.
But Sienna caught the faint gleam of triumph in her eyes.
'She truly knew how to put on an act.'
Her performance was practically Oscar-worthy.
Sienna was not buying any of it.
She replied coldly. "Ms. Sullivan, you and I barely know each other, and we've never worked together. If anyone is entitled to host my farewell dinner, it certainly isn't you!"
Vanessa blinked at the response, then arranged her features into a wounded expression.
Her eyes were filled with tears. "I know you resent me because you think I stole your position. But I have more experience and can contribute more to the company..."
She lowered her head as though ashamed. "Are you angry with me, Sienna? Should I not have accepted the director's position?"
The sudden one-woman performance caught Sienna off guard.
Before she could answer, Ethan's brows drew together. "Of course you should have accepted it!"
Then his icy gaze swung toward Sienna. "You've gone too far. Vanessa is trying to give you a proper send-off. What kind of attitude is that?"
Seeing him defend Vanessa without the slightest hesitation sent fury surging through Sienna.
"So I'm supposed to thank her?" She picked up a glass of wine and poured it over Vanessa's head. "Will this do?"
Then Sienna set down the glass and walked out of the private room without looking back.
Vanessa's sobs and Ethan's furious roar followed her down the hall.
Sienna no longer cared about either of them!
She walked straight out of the restaurant and stood by the curb in the cold wind.
The chill against her face cleared her head.
She called her best friend. "Chloe, do you know a good divorce attorney? I need some advice."
Chloe answered immediately. "I do. Are you getting divorced?"
Despite her friend's shock, Sienna calmly recounted everything that had happened over the past few days. "At first, I wasn't planning to ask him for much. I only wanted custody of Zoey. But I've changed my mind. Ethan and Vanessa are going to pay for what they've done. If I can leave them broke and publicly disgraced, even better!"
Chloe promised to contact an attorney and call her as soon as the arrangements were settled.
Sienna had stood outside the restaurant for so long that her hands and feet were numb with cold.
Yet the support of a friend brought warmth back into her heart.
Much later, Ethan emerged supporting a drunken Vanessa. They leaned into each other without regard for anyone watching, looking every bit like a couple in love.
Their eyes met. Vanessa deliberately said, "Ethan, I can walk by myself. You still need to drive Sienna home."
She pretended to be considerate.
Ethan answered without a moment's thought. "There's no need. She isn't that fragile. You're the one I'm worried about. What would I do if something happened to you?"
