Chapter 1
After three years of marriage, Sienna knew her husband, Ethan Hawthorne, didn't care about her. Even so, she never imagined he would bring his first love to his grandma's funeral.
Throughout the funeral, he hovered around his first love as though they were announcing their engagement, leaving his wife and daughter to fend for themselves while the guests whispered.
"So the mistress took the wife's place? No wonder she was thrown out..."
The whispers left a bitter taste in Sienna's mouth. It was true that Ethan's mother, Evelyn Hawthorne, had arranged her marriage to Ethan.
Years ago, a car accident had left Ethan unable to walk and deeply depressed, so Evelyn had hired Sienna to treat him.
Sienna had patiently counseled him and stayed by his side until he emerged from that darkness.
The night he recovered, the Hawthorne family threw a celebration. Ethan got drunk and called out her name over and over.
Hopelessly smitten, Sienna had given him her heart and body without reservation.
When she later became pregnant, marriage seemed like the natural next step. Their daughter, Zoey Hawthorne, was three before Sienna learned that Ethan had a first love whose name supposedly resembled hers.
Now, watching him lavish attention on that woman, Sienna finally had to wonder whose name he had really been calling that drunken night!
Only after making sure Vanessa Sullivan was comfortable did Ethan finally spare Sienna a glance. "Zoey has autism, and there are a lot of reporters here today. Keep a close eye on her."
A faint warmth returned to Sienna's chilled heart. "Zoey is well-behaved. She won't run off or get hurt."
He paused. "If anything happens to Zoey while she's with you, it'll be your fault. I just don't want any trouble at Grandma's funeral!"
Pain clenched Sienna's heart. As Zoey's father, he was actually more worried that his daughter might embarrass him at the funeral than about her safety!
Hiding her disappointment, Sienna patiently helped Zoey drink some water.
A sudden crash rang out, and Vanessa's son, Milo Sullivan, appeared before them.
Milo stared at Zoey with a nasty grin. "Sienna, is she your daughter with Daddy Ethan? I heard there's something wrong with her brain. Is that true?"
Sienna froze for two seconds, stunned to hear such cruelty from a three-year-old.
And had he just called Ethan... Daddy Ethan?
Sienna immediately shielded Zoey behind her. "Who taught you to say that?"
Very few people knew Zoey had autism. Had Ethan told him?
Milo lifted his chin smugly. "Why doesn't she talk? Is she mute too? No wonder Daddy Ethan and everyone else don't like her..."
Sienna's face hardened. "That is unbelievably rude! What kind of child behaves this way? Leave. Right now!"
She grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the door, desperate to get him away before Zoey heard more. Milo immediately began shrieking at her touch.
Ethan appeared in the doorway just then. Taking in the scene, he barked. "What are you doing? Stop manhandling a child and let Milo go!"
Furious, Sienna said, "He barged in here and kept insulting Zoey. I was only trying to make him leave."
Ethan interrupted her in an icy voice. "What nonsense! Milo just came back to the country and only met Zoey today! Why would he deliberately insult her?"
Sienna tried to protest. "I didn't..."
But her husband's attitude hit her like a bucket of ice water.
He would never believe her. The realization sent her heart plummeting into an icy abyss.
Vanessa came rushing over in tears. "Sienna, please let Milo go! I know you resent me, but he's only a child! He hasn't done anything wrong!"
The instant Vanessa started crying, Sienna looked even more vicious to everyone watching.
Sobbing in Ethan's arms, Vanessa cried. "I know you hate me for taking Ethan away from you. You can have him back. Just give me my son!"
Ethan frowned, displeased by her words. "Vanessa!"
His younger brother, Dylan Hawthorne, joined in with a sneer. "Milo is Vanessa's son. What gives you the right to slander him? You're just jealous! If you're going to make a scene at Grandma's funeral, then get out!"
Under the Hawthornes' icy stares, sharp pains stabbed through Sienna's heart.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She could only watch as Ethan shoved her aside and pulled Milo protectively behind him.
The disgust in his voice nearly drowned her. "Sienna, are you finished with this tantrum?"
Ethan warned her coldly. "Watch Zoey, and stop causing trouble for me!"
A bitter smile touched Sienna's lips. "I'm causing trouble? Someone else's child insulted Zoey, and you defended him without even asking what happened. Do you care about your daughter at all?"
For four years, she had devoted herself to being Ethan's perfect wife and obeyed every rule the Hawthorne family imposed.
Yet in the end, she wasn't even allowed to explain herself.
Sienna looked at Ethan shielding Vanessa and Milo and suddenly laughed.
Her tears landed cold against the back of her hand.
Desolation filled her eyes. "Ethan, you'll pay for this someday!"
She couldn't bear to stay there another second.
Sienna scooped Zoey into her arms and walked out of the funeral.
Ethan shouted after her. "If you leave, don't bother coming back!"
Outside the funeral home, the wind drove the rain against her like blades.
Each gust seemed to tear another hole through Sienna's heart.
She stood alone at the curb with Zoey in her arms, every trace of color gone from her face.
She had wanted to stay until the funeral ended and say one final goodbye to Grandma.
But the Hawthornes' coldness was unbearable.
With every cruel act, Ethan had trampled their four-year marriage into the ground.
Her disappointment finally forced her to face the truth...
The name Ethan had called that night had never been hers.
