I’ve had nine hours on the plane to think about what to say, but nothing sounds right in my head. When the handle turns and the apartment door swings open, I hold my breath. It isn’t Giada who answers though; it’s a human.
“Ummm? Are you expecting someone?” He shouts into the apartment. And it’s not just any human, it’s a man. What the hell? Maybe I’m at the wrong apartment, but he speaks English, and I can smell her.
“No. Who is it?” Her voice travels through the room. She rounds the corner of what I’m guessing is her kitchen and then she freezes, sucking in a small, barely audible breath.
I don’t wait for an invitation. I step inside.
