Nellie pov
I lifted my gaze and saw Scarlett Hayes and her friend Luisa Kim exchanging barbs. Luisa was mercilessly mocking me, each word laced with biting sarcasm, while Scarlett pretended to defend me but was actually pushing me further down.
One was a manipulative schemer, and the other a false saint; their collaboration was seamless, and it made me feel utterly disgusted.
Putting down the magazine in my hands, I said coolly, "Next time, get a rabies shot before you step out, so you won't bark everywhere."
Luisa, who had often bullied me before because I was a "guest of honor" invited by Scarlett, was taken aback by my unexpected retort. She leaned closer to Scarlett and whispered, "Why do I feel like this foolish woman is different now?"
Scarlett shot a glance at me, jealousy bubbling up inside her. The old me had never cared much for my appearance, always wearing plain and drab clothes that made me look older than my years. But now, in a flowing sea-green dress that accentuated my slim waist and fair skin, with my dark hair elegantly pinned up, I radiated a captivating charm.
Just sitting there, I looked like a stunning painting, drawing everyone's attention.
Clenching her fists, Scarlett muttered, "So what? She’s about to lose her status as Mrs. Blackwood. Dominic hasn’t left her a single penny."
The implication was clear: I was destined to be abandoned and left with nothing. I was not welcomed in the Carter family, so I would naturally be trampled upon.
The game of elevating oneself while dragging others down was a favorite among opportunists.
Luisa, eager to latch onto the Blackwood family through Scarlett, knew exactly what to do. Besides, James scott was the man she had her sights set on, and she couldn't afford to show mercy to a rival.
"Vivian Carter, do you even have any shame left? You’re still married to Dominic Blackwood , yet you’re already tangled up with James scott. You sure are quick to find a backup!"
I sneered, "Luisa, if your eyesight is failing, I can recommend a doctor for you. Also, since you know that I’m still married to Dominic Blackwood , you should advise your friend to think twice. Otherwise, even if she marries into the Blackwood family, it will be an illegitimate union."
Scarlett Hayes's face turned pale. She truly wanted to marry into the Blackwood family in style, not be labeled as a mistress.
I and Dominic Blackwood were secretly married. To outsiders, Dominic was still a diamond bachelor, while people at work believed Scarlett was his legitimate girlfriend. Once I successfully divorced Dominic, he would regain his single status, and I could then publicly reveal our relationship, making everything seem legitimate and above board.
Luisa Kim shot back, "If it weren't for you swooping in with that kidney, Scarlett would have been happily with Dominic by now. You're the real lowly mistress here!"
I turned to Scarlett with a smile, "Scarlett, is that true?"
Back then, besides me, Scarlett Hayes was the only other match for the kidney donation. Before the surgery, I had approached Scarlett with a bank card in hand. I offered her a choice: either she would be the one to donate the kidney, or she could take the card and disappear, with the condition that she would never see Dominic again.
Scarlett chose the latter.
Only now did I realize that Scarlett had broken her promise, buzzing around Dominic like a fly for the past three years.
Feeling uneasy under my gaze, Scarlett tugged at Luisa's arm, "Luisa, it's all in the past. Let it go."
Luisa Kim, indignant, replied, "Scarlett, you're too kind-hearted, which is why you let that shameless woman steal your happiness."
She was determined to teach me a lesson, to show me that some men were off-limits.
"You can't hold back when dealing with a shameless person!"
Luisa Kim raised her hand and swung it toward my face.
Caught off guard, I received a sharp slap that made me gasp in pain, my eyes swirling with fury. If someone was looking for trouble, I wouldn't mind giving them what they wanted.
Ignoring the murderous intent radiating from me, Luisa lunged at me, aiming to scratch my delicate, fair face with her sharp nails.
In a swift motion, I seized Luisa's wrist and, using the momentum, delivered a powerful slap back.
Smack! Smack! Smack!
Luisa was hit with several solid slaps, her cheeks instantly swelling, and blood oozed from the corner of her mouth.
I looked at her with a smirk, "This is just a little tit for tat. If you want to keep this up, I’m more than willing to play along!"
Luisa was momentarily stunned, struggling to process what had just happened. The usually docile and timid woman had struck her back, and it hurt like hell.
"You little tramp! You're just a toy Dominic Blackwood has grown tired of, and you think you can climb into James scott's bed? Dream on!"
Luisa grabbed the steaming cup of coffee from the table and hurled it at me, eager to see how I would charm men without my pretty face.
I realized too late that I couldn't get up in time. I kicked the coffee table with all my might.
The marble table slid several feet before crashing into Luisa's knee, causing her to stumble backward, spilling the hot coffee all over her own face.
"Ah!" Luisa Kim couldn't help but scream, struggling to lunge at me. "You b***h, I'm going to kill you!"
At that moment, James scott rushed over and immediately stood in front of me.
Seeing him protect me like that, Luisa covered her swollen, peeling face and shouted in indignation, "James scott, you've been fooled by this innocent-looking face! She's a married woman, yet she's trying to seduce you. How shameless!"
In her eyes I must have hidden my marital status to attract James's attention.
James quickly guessed the reason behind Luisa's attack on me. He quietly apologized to me and then grabbed Luisa's wrist, striding toward the door. "You’re coming with me!"
The commotion in the reception room soon reached the office.
Marvis styles frowned. "What’s going on?"
When the assistant arrived, he happened to see a man and a woman tugging at each other in the hallway. The man was James scott, the bidder for this project, and the woman was a model for Vyx.
He immediately classified the incident as James scott's romantic entanglement.
Marvis joked, "James scott really is a charming guy; wherever he goes, he stirs up a storm among women."
Dominic Blackwood narrowed his eyes. "Is James scott one of the bidders this time?"
"Yes, he's the illegitimate son of the Scott family who's been wandering around. But this kid has some skills; he might just become the heir of the Scott family in the future."
I flipped through the bidding documents and coldly said, "Pass on the affection."
"You're a shareholder of Vyx, so you do have the right to veto, but..." Marvis's tone shifted as he looked at him with interest. "Dominic, something seems off. Did this Scott guy steal your wife?"
