Everyone knew what happened when the Moon Goddess chose a mate.

You accepted the bond. You bowed to destiny. You never questioned the will of the Moon.

Lyra Vale has spent her entire life believing she is ordinary. She has no powerful family name, no remarkable abilities, and no place among the influential wolves of Mooncrest Pack. But on the night of her mate ceremony, everything changes.

The Moon Goddess chooses Kael Draven—the feared Alpha heir of Blackthorn Pack—as her mate.

Then Kael looks at the mysterious crescent mark on Lyra's skin.

His expression changes.

And in front of the entire pack, he rejects her.

Lyra is humiliated, heartbroken, and determined to forget the Alpha who discarded her.

But Kael's rejection doesn't break their bond.

It awakens something inside her.

As strange abilities begin emerging, Lyra discovers that the mark her mother warned her to hide is connected to an ancient bloodline believed to have vanished centuries ago—the Moonborn.

And Kael knows more than he's telling her.

Her mother's disappearance wasn't an accident. The Alpha bloodlines are hiding a secret. A rival pack is searching for her. And the prophecy surrounding her return could destroy the entire system that has ruled the werewolf world for generations.

Kael rejected Lyra because he believed staying away from her would protect her.

He was wrong.

Because the girl he publicly rejected may be the one person powerful enough to bring his family's kingdom crashing down.

She was born to break the old order.

He was raised to protect it.

And now they must decide whether destiny is something they were born to obey—or something they have the power to change.

The Rejection
The night the Moon Goddess chose my mate was supposed to be the best night of my life. Instead, it became the night everyone learned my name for all the wrong reasons. I stood at the edge of the ceremonial clearing, trying not to look as nervous as I felt. Hundreds of wolves surrounded the Moonstone Circle. Their voices blended into a restless murmur beneath the silver light of the full moon. Torches burned along the stone path, their flames bending in the cold wind that swept through the trees. Tonight was the Choosing. For every wolf who had reached the age of seventeen, it was the moment we'd spent years imagining. The Moon Goddess would reveal our destined mates. Some people dreamed about it from childhood. Others pretended they didn't care. I belonged firmly to the second group. At least, that was what I had been telling myself. "Stop staring at the ground." I glanced sideways. Mira stood beside me, adjusting the sleeve of her ceremonial dress. "I'm not staring at the ground." "You've been staring at the same patch of grass for five minutes." "Maybe it's interesting." Mira snorted. "You are impossible." "Thank you." "That wasn't a compliment." "I accepted it as one." She rolled her eyes, but I caught the smile she tried to hide. Mira had been my best friend for as long as I could remember. She knew when I was nervous, when I was angry, and—unfortunately—when I was pretending not to be either. She leaned closer. "Are you scared?" I looked toward the Moonstone Circle. "No." "Lyra." "Fine." I sighed. "A little." Her expression softened. "Everyone is." I wasn't sure that was true. Across the clearing, the children of powerful families stood surrounded by relatives who looked far more excited than they did. Some wore expensive ceremonial clothes decorated with silver threads. Others had family symbols embroidered across their chests. I had none of that. My dress was simple. My family name meant very little. My mother had disappeared when I was seven, and my father had died two years later. Since then, I had grown up as an ordinary member of Mooncrest Pack. No powerful bloodline. No impressive abilities. No famous ancestors. Just Lyra Vale. The girl nobody expected anything from. Honestly, I preferred it that way. Expectations were exhausting. The Alpha of Mooncrest stepped onto the raised stone platform. The crowd immediately fell silent. "Tonight," he announced, "the Moon Goddess gathers those whose paths were written before they were born." A chill moved through me. Before they were born. I had always hated that idea. The thought that some invisible force could decide who you would become, who you would love, and where your life would go made me uncomfortable. I wanted to choose my own future. But apparently, the Moon Goddess didn't care about my opinions. The ceremony began. One by one, names were called. One by one, young wolves stepped into the circle. Some returned smiling. Some cried. A few looked disappointed. The crowd reacted to each revelation with cheers and whispers. Then the Alpha's voice echoed through the clearing. "Lyra Vale." My stomach dropped. Mira squeezed my hand. "Go." I swallowed. "Easy for you to say." "You'll be fine." "That's exactly what people say before something goes terribly wrong." She laughed softly. I stepped forward. The moment my foot crossed the boundary of the Moonstone Circle, the entire clearing seemed to change. The wind stopped. The flames of the torches became strangely still. Even the voices of the crowd disappeared. I looked up. The full moon seemed impossibly bright. A silver warmth spread across my skin. My heart began pounding. Then— Something inside me pulled. Not physically. It was deeper than that. Like an invisible thread had suddenly tightened around my chest. My breath caught. Across the clearing, someone moved. I looked toward the entrance. And everything inside me went silent. A young man stood among the members of Blackthorn Pack. I knew who he was. Everyone did. Kael Draven. The Alpha heir of Blackthorn. He had arrived with his father earlier that evening, and his presence had immediately changed the atmosphere. People moved aside when he walked past. They lowered their voices. Some looked at him with admiration. Others with fear. He was supposed to inherit the Blackthorn Alpha title. Powerful. Disciplined. Untouchable. And now he was staring directly at me. My heartbeat became painfully loud. No. No, no, no. The invisible pull inside my chest strengthened. The Moonstone beneath my feet began glowing. A collective gasp moved through the crowd. The Alpha turned toward Kael. "Kael Draven." Silence. Kael didn't move. Neither did I. The connection between us became stronger with every second. The answer was obvious. Everyone knew it. I knew it. Kael knew it. He was my mate. A few people in the crowd began whispering. "Blackthorn's heir?" "She's his mate?" "Impossible." I heard someone laugh. Another person whispered something about my family. I ignored them. My attention remained fixed on Kael. For one brief moment, his expression was unreadable. Then his eyes dropped. Not to my face. To my shoulder. A strange feeling crawled across my skin. Kael's expression changed. His face lost all color. He looked terrified. Not surprised. Not angry. Terrified. I instinctively touched my shoulder. There was nothing there that I knew of. Just the same skin I'd had all my life. Except— Heat suddenly burned beneath my collarbone. I gasped. A faint silver light appeared beneath my skin. Kael took one step backward. The crowd noticed. Whispers grew louder. His father, Alpha Darius Draven, stared at me. And unlike Kael, he didn't look surprised. He looked furious. My stomach tightened. What was happening? Kael looked at his father. For the first time, I saw something c***k through his carefully controlled expression. Fear. His father gave him a barely noticeable shake of the head. Kael looked back at me. I expected him to walk toward me. Instead, he stepped forward once. Then again. The crowd became completely silent. He stopped several feet away. I could barely breathe. "Kael," the Alpha of Mooncrest said carefully, "the Moon Goddess has chosen." Kael's jaw tightened. I waited. A strange hope appeared in my chest despite everything I'd told myself about destiny. Maybe this wasn't so bad. Maybe the Moon Goddess had chosen correctly. Maybe— "I reject the bond." His words struck harder than any physical blow could have. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody breathed. I stared at him. "What?" My voice sounded unfamiliar. Kael's face remained cold. "I reject you as my mate." The clearing erupted. Whispers. Gasps. Shock. Someone behind me said my name. Mira stepped forward. "Lyra—" I couldn't hear her. All I could hear was those four words repeating inside my head. I reject you. My cheeks burned. I wanted the ground to swallow me. I wanted to disappear. But somehow, I forced myself to keep standing. I looked directly at Kael. "If you were going to reject me," I said quietly, "you could've at least waited until after dinner." A few shocked laughs escaped from the crowd. Kael's expression barely changed. But his eyes did. For half a second, I saw something there. Regret. Then it vanished. "Leave," he said. My eyebrows rose. "Excuse me?" "You shouldn't be here." That hurt more than the rejection. I forced a laugh. "Don't worry, Alpha Heir. I wasn't planning to move into your house." His jaw tightened. I turned away before he could see how badly my hands were shaking. I had barely taken three steps when the mark beneath my collarbone burned again. This time, it wasn't warmth. It was fire. I cried out. The entire clearing went silent. A silver symbol appeared against my skin. A crescent moon. But it wasn't an ordinary crescent. Intricate markings spread from it like branches, glowing brighter with every heartbeat. People stumbled backward. Someone shouted. "Moonborn." The word traveled through the crowd like a curse. Moonborn. I didn't understand. But Kael did. He stared at the mark with something close to horror. His father moved immediately. "Take her." Several guards stepped forward. I backed away. "Take me where?" Nobody answered. Mira grabbed my arm. "Lyra, run." "What?" "RUN!" We turned. Three guards blocked our path. My pulse raced. Something inside me stirred. A strange pressure built beneath my skin. The air around me seemed to vibrate. One of the guards reached for me. I flinched. And the moment his hand touched my arm— The ground shook. A burst of silver light exploded outward. The guards were thrown backward. Everyone screamed. I stared at my hands. I hadn't done that. I couldn't have. I didn't know how. Kael was staring at me again. But this time, there was no coldness in his expression. Only disbelief. He whispered something. I couldn't hear him. His father could. Darius turned sharply toward him. "What did you say?" Kael didn't answer. His eyes remained fixed on me. Then I heard it. Barely audible. "The mark." He swallowed. "She's Moonborn." My blood ran cold. The crowd erupted again. And somewhere beyond the trees, hidden in the darkness, a wolf howled. Then another answered. Then another. Not from Mooncrest. Not from Blackthorn. From somewhere far beyond our territory. Something was coming. And somehow, deep inside me, I already knew— They were coming for me.
