Chapter 1
Part 1
I stared down the barrel of the gun, my eyes locked on the man behind it. I couldn't make out his face. However, I knew who he was. For a long time he hunted me and searched for me. All I needed to do was get away from him in order to get away from him. My energy was low and I couldn't do anything but talk. However, no words came out of my mouth. I could form no words.
"Sara!"
My mind played through the different possibilities of how to get away from this man and the gun pointed at me. All I could tell was that he was out of focus. I couldn't even make out his eyes. My eyes only focused on the gun in front of me, which was a model from the 1950s. I just needed to call upon a hint of magic. That would be enough and I would be able to get away. I blew out a breath as I took a step back. Then he growled some gibberish at me.
"Sara!"
I jerked my head and the gun went off.
"Sara!" I jumped, forcing my eyes open. For a moment, everything was blurry but I could make out my roommate. She looked at me with her brows furrowed. I sat up rubbing my face.
I asked, "What is it, Hanna?"
"You are a bit jumpy today. I was worried. You were thrashing pretty badly." She sat down on my bed next to me. I gave her a short nod as I rubbed my eyes before my vision cleared up.
"Yeah, just a nightmare."
"Another one?" I nodded again. She blew out a breath before nodding back to me. I let out a sigh as I stood up.
"What time is it, Hanna?" I asked as I picked up my phone but found that it was dead. I shook my head as I plugged it in. My eyes went over to her as she peered at the clock.
"About 9 in the morning."
"I need to get ready for class." I wanted to go back to bed after that nightmare but I needed to get to class. Hanna didn't say a word as I stumbled into my bathroom. I quickly took a shower and dressed in a casual blue dress. My backpack was at the ready by the front door as I headed out.
"Um. Anything else you are planning to do today, Sara?" I turned back to Hanna with my brows furrowed. She tilted her head, staring at me carefully. Her green eyes were locked on the ground as she glanced around.
"I work until seven tonight."
"I think that's perfect. Do you want to go out and get something to eat? Do something?" I bit the inside of my cheek as I examined her.
Hanna's face fell as I turned towards the door. I had barely had a chance to make good friends with her over the past couple of months we had been roommates. She was a nice girl over all, but with my work and schooling it was hard for me to actually spend time with her. I blinked a few times as I removed my hand from the door handle. "How about I make dinner? It's been a while."
Her face lit up at that. "I think that sounds like a good idea."
"If you want anything specific you just need to buy the stuff for it or I could create it with what we have. It is up to you, but I need to get going."
"Of course." She grinned. Her blonde hair went flying as she bounced up and down. Hanna was a good person. She had a love affair with meat, which wasn't an issue, but she always seemed to eat a lot more than I could afford. However, she always brought her own food, at least, so I couldn't argue. I already knew she was a werewolf, not that she had told me. My magic had told me and I could tell when she was arguing with her wolf.
School was mostly working on different projects for the finals of the semester. Work was just as boring. I worked a retail job in the evening in order to help make ends meet. It wasn't a totally bad job as my coworkers were fun to work with, but retail could tear at you. I got home a little after seven thirty. Hanna was happily waiting in the kitchen with the food set out and cut up. I raised an eyebrow and asked, 'What do you want for dinner?"
She handed me the recipe with a smile as she did her best in order to keep from grinning, bouncing around. I chuckled as she handed me a recipe for a simple steak. That sounded like her. "I can do that. How do you want it done?"
"Medium rare." She went to her chair.
I nodded to her and quickly got to work as I got the pan heated and the meat seasoned. I laughed and hummed to myself. Whilst I had been on my feet for a while today, I was more than happy to cook. It was a nice distraction. For a while, Hanna talked to me as I cooked the food. Once I finished cooking, we sat down at the kitchen table, digging in. Part way through, Hanna asked, "Do you want to go to a party this weekend, Sara?"
"Hanna, you know I don't..." I put down my fork and knife.
"C'mon, Sara. You hardly ever go out and do anything fun."
She gave me puppy-dog eyes. I shook my head and rolled my eyes and let out a sigh. When was the last time I went out and did something fun? "Fine. When is it?"
"Saturday at six pm. We are celebrating the full moon."
When she said that, I nearly choked on my food. I took a sip of water, taking a look at her. She smiled at me with the bat of her eyes. I let out a long breath. I could see where this was going. A growl nearly escaped my lips as I looked at her. I nodded to her and said, "Fine. Can we be done at ten?"
"Sure. That actually works out perfectly, Sara."
"Alright." I sighed. I didn't know what I was going to do with her at the moment. I ran a hand over my face and let out a long breath. What else was I supposed to do? It was rare for werewolves to invite outsiders to their full moon celebrations. However, I couldn't think of a reason other than it was what they wanted.
