Chapter 1: The Unrequited Love
[PEARL] My day began like any other, lost in a fantasy. I envisioned myself sitting on Zach Davis' lap, his strong hands tangled in my hair, planting kisses along my neck. My heart raced as I imagined his deep voice whispering sweet nothings. But, as always, reality intruded. "Good morning," Zach's familiar voice cut through my reverie. I turned to face him, my bright smile masking the ache in my heart. My boss, the man I couldn't stop thinking about, strode into the office, his leather chair creaking as he settled in. "Good morning sir, I'm sorry I didn't noticed you coming in." His piercing gaze never met mine, and I felt the sting of rejection. "What's my schedule for today?" he asked, shrugging off his expensive black suit jacket. I took it from him, my fingers grazing his, and hung it by the coat rack. "You have a meeting with the contractors at 10, sir. And don't forget the important documents on your desk, waiting for your signature." As he nodded, his eyes never left the papers in front of him. I felt like an invisible presence, a mere ghost hovering around him. "You also have a lunch date with your mom at 1 pm, followed by a meeting with the board of directors at 2:30 pm. And finally, a meeting with our potential investor, BeRECK, at 4 pm." "Cancel the lunch date with my mom," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "I'd rather use that time for a working lunch with a client." I knew why he avoided his mom's lunch invitations - her constant nagging about settling down and producing grandchildren. "Is there anything else you need me to do before I leave?" And again, I daydreamed. "Yes, give me your panties." "No, Miss Collins. That's all for now." I nodded in disappointment. Of course, I can't show that as I took my leave to my office. As the day unfolded, I trailed Zach to his meetings, taking notes and handling his phone. The screen flashed with his mom's name, but he ignored it. "Answer that," he commanded, his tone detached. I hesitated, unsure what to say. "Sir, it's your mom... again." He exhaled, his eyes never leaving the papers in front of him. "Tell her anything, just get rid of her." I picked up the phone, my voice trembling. "Hello?" Eunice's voice boomed through the line, her words laced with a hint of warning. "Tell my son that if he doesn't respond to my calls, I'll pack my bags and move into his mansion tonight!” Zach snatched the phone from me, his expression a mix of exhaustion and annoyance. "Mom, what now?" He listened, his eyes fixed on me, as I felt a flutter in my chest. "We will be there," he said finally, his gaze never leaving mine. "We're both going to my Mom's." The tension between us was palpable as we left the office and slid into his black Jaguar XE. The drive to Eunice's mansion was a blur, my mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead. As we arrived, Eunice greeted us with a warm embrace, her eyes shining with excitement. The dining table was a feast for the senses, a spread of delicacies that could feed a small village. As we sat down, Eunice's words cut through the silence. "Son, why do you keep running from me? Don't you know how it feels since we lost your dad? This is a time to bond as a family." Zach's response was laced with frustration. "Mom, you know I'm not running. I just get tired of your constant pressure to settle down.” Eunice's voice rose, her words dripping with emotion. "You're 35, Zach! I'm not getting any younger. When will you give me grandchildren?" Zach's fork clattered against the plate as he stood up, his voice echoing through the room. "How many times have you told Zayn to do what makes you happy? It's always me, me, me! I sacrificed my dream of being a pilot to run Dad's business while Zayn followed his!” The air was thick with tension as Eunice's face fell, her eyes welling up in remorse. I felt a pang of sympathy for her, but my gaze was drawn to Zach, his anger and frustration palpable. The scene was a powder keg, waiting to ignite. Just as it seemed like things couldn't get more intense, Zach's phone rang. He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening. "I need to take this," he muttered, striding out of the room. I watched him go, my heart racing with anticipation. Thank God the call came at the right time. The atmosphere was so thick, I could cut it with scissors. As I turned to face Eunice, I saw her eyes fixed on me, a hint of curiosity in their depths. "Pearl, dear," she said, her voice low and mysterious. "I think it's time we had a little chat about Zach's future." And with that, Eunice's words hung in the air like a challenge, her eyes glinting with a knowing light. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized she was about to reveal something significant. "What do you mean, Mrs.Davis?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. She leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Zach's past is complicated, Pearl. He's been hurt before, and it's made him wary of relationships. But I think he's ready to move on, and I think you're the one who can help him." My heart skipped a beat as I processed Eunice's words. Zach, hurt? I couldn't imagine it. He is always so confident, so in control. "What happened?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. Eunice's expression turned somber. "It's not my story to tell, Pearl. But I will say this: Zach's past is a heavy burden, and he needs someone to share it with. Someone he can trust." I felt a surge of empathy for Zach and a determination to help him. Little did I know, our conversation was about to be interrupted in a dramatic way. Just then, the doorbell rang, and Eunice's face lit up. "That must be the dessert I ordered from the bakery!" She jumped up to answer the door, leaving me alone in the dining room. As I waited, I heard the sound of footsteps approaching, but it wasn't Eunice who returned with the dessert. It was a woman, tall and stunning, with piercing green eyes and long, curly hair. "Hello, Pearl," she said, her voice dripping with confidence. "I'm Sophia, Zach's ex-girlfriend. And I'm here to warn you away from him." My heart sank as I realized the evening was about to take a very unexpected turn…
