Prologue: Fair Exchange
Unknown Creatures POV:
"Are you absolutely sure about this,Mermaid? Because after the deal is sealed there will be no turning back. No matter what you try you will not be able to return to the ocean."I say eyeing the dull mermaid with a blank look on my face. She had a long black tail no color could be found on her except for the her pearly white skin.
"Yes,I am. I wish to trade my tail for human legs, not for a mere hour but for the rest of my life even if it costs me my voice like in the legends."The mermaid said I bit my lip trying not to laugh at her silly-ness. That legend is actually something that had happened though everyone seemed to have forgotten the part that the girl was not a Mer but a Siren, like myself. And that she had been brutally killed by the human she had bared mer for.
"Ah,but it is not your voice that I seek. But a soul and a heart. "Her eyes widened at my words and she began to back away but I whipped forward faster than she could react and curled my fingers around her wrists. "In exchange for legs you need to find a human and they need to say these exact words:'I wish I could stay forever within the waters of the see.' Without you having told them to do so. "She seemed to consider my words as she stared in to my eyes and ripped her fingers from my grasp, my long sharp nails cutting through the delicate skin there. She swam back a bit and grinned an evil grin.
"Alright then how to we seal this deal?"She asks. I took a jar and threw it at her she caught it easily and stared at me in confusion.
"You have already sealed it when you had drawn blood from the cut on your wrist. The exchange needs to happen within the day that you have turned human. If not you will be forcefully dragged back in the ocean. Smear that on your tail and I suggest that you must be close to land before you do so or you might just drown."I say and watched as she narrowed her eyes at me.
"What will you do to the person who will take my place?"She asks.
"Oh, that is something that I will keep to myself. You do not need to know and quite frankly you and I both know you do not give two shits as to what I will be doing to them."I say and she nods about to leave."Ah, right my name is Alistair, mermaid, what is yours?"I ask remembering something she turned her head slightly eyes searching mine.
"Serena."She says before swimming off in a hurry. Probably to find a place to shift. I shook my head and backed away slowly.
Sirius P.O.V:
Damn it. Why can't any of my dates understand my love for the ocean isn't an obsession? I know I spend my time around it more than a normal person should but then again I'm not really normal, after all I am a water mage in the 21'st century what do you expect? And then there's also the fact that I am a marine biologist and vet. Gah! If anything their unhealthy for me,bloody land-lovers.My shoulders sagged and I ran a hand through my mostly blonde and brown hair. Yeah no....by next week I'd probably have a crush on someone else and the week after that I'd be down here again kicking stones and the sinking sand away from my feet. Pathetic aren't I? My mum told me that it was only natural for a water based mage to want to be close to the water no matter what. And since my only close by water reserve was the ocean I tend to stray towards it more than anyone else would. Not that it would seem weird at first in fact I know it seems almost natural until you notice that I pay it more attention than my surroundings now that isn't very smart now,is it? Okay maybe it is a slight obsession,I cringe at the idea that the ocean was some weird fetish to me, but I know it isn't. It's more like my home than anything else. A strangled gasp caught my attention not to far away from myself. Furrowing my brows in confusion I turned my watch up studying it in the low light of the street lights behind me. 02;03 am, What the hell is someone doing so close to the water so early in the morning? Instantly I scolded myself mentally,I was outside wasn't I? And on the beach no less. For a scientist I can be a complete moron sometimes. I walked over only to freeze when I spotted a naked lady on the sand some waves curling over her legs now and then. She grinned and waved me over,I sighed my shoulders bunched up in to a lazy shrug before trotting over.
"Are you alright, lady?"Mentally and physically. I add silently in my mind. "Did something happen, where is your clothing?"I ask a second later raking my eyes over the beach before draping my button up shirt over her shoulders as I kneel down beside her she looked up startled but soon smiled at me.
"Hello there young man,do you like what you see?"She asked,I stared at her surprised. Is she serious? Is she only lying her naked hoping a man would come across her? Jesus I am not in the mood for this.
"Um,sorry that's a no go. I don't swing that way."At least not now."Sorry sister. "I say. She seemed to be absorbing what I had just said and sneered at me. Oh great just what I need today,a homophobic b***h. The day just gets better and better.
"Well then if you aren't hurt or anything than I will be on my way. Keep the shirt."I went to stand but her hand shot out and gripped my forearm.
"Wait,I have a question. When are others going to get here?"Was this woman for real? She was just waiting around for people to show up?
"Um, there won't be people around for a couple of hours I had just happened to be walking by when I saw you." I went to stand again but her grip on my arm tightened.
"Well, that's not good,I don't have a lot of time to spare. So I guess you will have to do. What is your name?"She asked.
Right at that moment I was seriously considering yanking my arm from her grasp and leaving her,yet I indulged her.
"My name is Sirius, can I go now?"I ask. She just laughed.
"Hello Sirius,my name is Serena. And I have just one little favor for you to do for me before you go. Can you please read the words written in the sand for me?" She got to be kidding, However when I glanced at the sand in front of her there was indeed words written in the it. I looked back up at her and she had a smile on her face before giving a nod of encouragement. I sighed and began to read.
" I wish I could stay forever within the waters of the see." As soon as those words left my mouth pain began to engulf my senses. Spreading from my chest to every corner of my body. Even through it I could hear her laughter as she rolled me in to the waters that I so adore.
"Tell Alistair I said Hello."She said as she did so.
My throat hurt more than the rest of my body does, Begging for oxygen when my head was still above the water, my lips parted as I inhaled greedily but that only seemed to increase the heat that scalded my lungs. My body felt heavier than what I could handle and even as I try to think of a spell a way to keep me afloat my arms gave way and I sank to the bottom slowly. Holding my breath and hoping to hold out for as long as I could but I hadn't gotten much air and soon my mouth opened I waited patiently for death to grasp at my soul but instead I was breathing perfectly well....what the hell? I felt faint traces of magic that did not belong to me on my skin. I raised my body or at least tried to but it wouldn't budge. I raised my arm intending to run a hand through my hair only to pause. Blue and silver scales ran up from my now webbed fingers that had suddenly became sharper than they had previously been. The scales formed in to small fins at my elbows and then the scaled moved further until they reached my shoulders before disappearing and reappearing at my collarbone, the sides of my neck and from what I could feel lightly around my eyes as well. I let my hands wander over my ears finding that they were slightly longer and pointed now. My hair was significantly longer to the point that the strands reached my waist they were now a light blue dusted with silver strands in-between. But that wasn't what had me freaking. My legs were gone, and in their place was a huge tail with three wavy curve like fins sprouting from the end and even more fins as my tail went up to my waist, its scales far darker blue and silver than what was spread all over my body. But it would be a lie if I were to say that my tail wasn't beautiful. I relaxed gradually well at least I have a reason to stay in the ocean now. I began to practice swimming with my tail and using the gills at the sides of my neck and torso to breathe instead of my nose and mouth. I found that I still had my magic but I couldn't use it to turn myself back. And yes I did want to go back even if I liked the ocean if I could, but since I obviously can't...well then, lets find this Alistair person and see if he could help me instead,if he couldn't then I'll stay. Once I was sure my body could move comfortably and quickly I swam away from sore hoping that my friends wouldn't do something drastic once they realize I'm gone.
