“Naya, I have something to tell you” her dad said immediately Nolan, her brother stood up from the table.
“Huh” Nolan asked as he fit his chair back into the table
“Not you, Nolan” Denzel, her dad responded
“You may leave now” he finished off
“Have a great day too, dad” Nolan said as he made his way out of the house
“Yes, dad” Naya said, bringing Denzel’s attention back to her
He didn’t say anything for a while and just stared at the food on his plate, poking the bacon with his fork
Naya raised her brow as she turned to her mom who had been quiet the whole time. She also seems clearly uncomfortable.
“Can someone tell me what is going on, please” Naya said dropping her fork on her plate and plopping her elbows on the table
When there was still no response from both her parents, she continued
“Isn’t this supposed to be a happy moment for us all? I just got back home yesterday, another degree in the bag and ready to take over the Belmont Group” Naya said
“We’re happy Naya” her mother, Amelia said, her voice almost cracking
“Then what’s hanging over our heads?” She asked, brows raised
“Naya Belmont” her dad finally said
“Mr Denzel Belmont” she responded, fully facing him with a confused look on her face.
She caught a glimpse of her mom fiddling with her fingers and she knew something had happened
“You know every action we take at the Belmont Group is to ensure the business grows and we keep topping the charts at the end of the year, right?” Denzel asked
“I know that much” Naya answered
“And you also know that your mother and I want the best for you and would never do anything to hurt you, right? He asked again
Now, she was even more confused but she just nodded slightly in response, urging him with her hands to continue
Denzel was silent for a while as if thinking of what to say
She turned to her mom on the other side of the table who reached out and copped her hands in hers
“Your father and I love you so much Naya and we want you to be happy” her mother said as her hands started shaking in Naya’s
“Okay, someone better start talking right now” Naya said as she removed her hands from her mom’s grip and wore a stern look on her face
“Listen” Denzel started
“I know you’re ready and able to take over Belmont from me now and I’m ready to hand it over” he was hoping this would boost her ego but her face showed no emotions so he continued
“But we had an agreement with the Everett group a while back, that explains why even on our bad days, we don’t fall off the top companies on the charts”
Naya seemed to be confused but she adjusted her face and asked
“What was the agreement about?”
Denzel looked at his wife at the corner of his eye and her eyes were fixated on the table the whole time, he knew he had to do this now
“Are you familiar with the new heir of the Everett group?” he asked Naya
“Eliot Everett?” She asked her father scrunching her brows
“Yes, yes” he answered, relieved that she at least knew him
Naya nudged him with her hands to go on
He took a deep breath and continued
“You are betrothed to be married to him”
The entire room fell silent and she just stared at him without emotions.
