Sapphire’s POV:
“Can you at least consider my request?” I shook my head as I walked through the empty hallways of Steel Ins. & Co. And Mr James Newton, my new PA and now a good friend, nearly ran to match up with my pace.
“We are going to be late for the meeting if you keep whining about my lack of sleep. I'll manage my dark circles when they appear. Your job is to remind me about my meetings and plan the roadmap for the day out.” I spoke, tapping a reply on my phone for the reports of the marketing department.
“I know what I'm paid for, Miss Steel.” He argued and we stepped out of the elevator door to the floor of the conference room.
“And cancelling my meetings without my permission is not one of them.” I kept my voice straight, making it clear to him that if it happens again, he is done for this month.
He stepped forward to me and opened the conference door. I walked into the room with grace. Wearing a white laced top with ankle-length dark green formal plants and Suite with the simple accessories and elegant nude heels, I sat on the head of the table while opening a button on my suit jacket and nodded my head to the fellow members of the meeting who stood up as soon as I entered the room.
They sat on their designated seats and James announced the starting of the meeting. The lights of the conference room went dim as the presentation on our new project started.
One of the engineers from the operational department lead the meeting and presented the plans for the first project of the year, as it is 1st January.
After two hours of explanation, questions and answers, an embodiment presentation and strategic initiative elaboration, the meeting was finally coming to an end.
“Well done Mr Cameron, your team never fails to walk on my expectations. I must say, you have done extraordinary work on the task that was given in your hands. But I yet have to go through some blueprints and papers to ensure the safety measure myself. We'll have the final meeting for the project at the end of this month.” I stood up from my seat and everyone else followed my suit. Buttoning the suit button I said.
“The meeting is adjourned. Have a nice day ladies and gentlemen.” I walked out of the room and signed. The footsteps behind me made clear that James was coming right behind me.
“Look you need to try a dress for tomorrow's celebration. Please, I beg you, Sapphire. Go home and rest for the day. Tomorrow is a big say for you. And Adam won't be happy to see dark circles under your eyes while he officially proposes to you.” I ignored his words and he pressed the elevator button, while we waited in quiet.
“I don't think I can celebrate something tomorrow, James. It is just not possible for me. I'm gonna call Adam and tell him to make the event personal and postponed it to 3rd January. You know how I ruined his surprise last year. I don't want to repeat history.” We talked out of the elevator and James kept quiet as we walked past the reception of my floor and to my office.
“Sapphire please, Mr Black has been preparing for this celebration since last month. You can't just say no to him.” He slammed the files in his hands on my desk and plopped down on the chair opposite to me.
“Well, I can! Watch me!” I took my phone and dialled the first number of my fast dial. The calming voice greeted me after two rings.
“Hello Angel, I was just leaving for the Airport. What are you...” I couldn't hear the rest cause the phone was snatched out of my hands and James answered the call in his most cheery voice.
“Hey, Mr Black! Sapphire is jumping around the office and screaming that she loves you every five minutes.” I rubbed my forehead in annoyance. Adam knows me too well to believe that statement.
As expected, James handed over the call and left the office looking at me with a smile. I signed and pressed the phone on my ear and turned my chair, so I was looking at the beautiful view of the city from the wall-length glass of my office.
“You don't want to celebrate your birthday, do you?” I bit my lips to say my words out loud.
“We still can arrange a very private and super personal celebration for us. You know that right?” I let out a groan, which is a very unladylike sound if you ask me.
“I want to do it but I don't,” I whispered. He made me celebrate my birthday last year and I almost went bonkers due to the thoughts in my mind. I ended up crying like a melting Mountain and it went on for the next 5 hours until I passed out in Adam’s arms and he had to carry me from the farmhouse that he gifted me on the day to his apartment and call the doctor to check up on me.
He was so worried when I suddenly fainted while talking to him. He thought I won't wake up for several days just like last year. Thankfully, I gain consciousness in just a few hours. Though, I was graced with an hour-long lecture about how worried he was and how careless I was when I didn't eat anything the day before my birthday.
It was the first and last Time Adam kept on lashing out at me for an hour. Or else we have never raised our voice at each other, no matter how big the argument would get. We always solve our issues while we are in a condition to listen to each other’s argument.
“Come home. I'll prepare dinner for you. You can go to your Apartment afterwards.” I tapped my nails on the glass wall and tried to reduce the tension between us.
“I was thinking, I'll live at your place. It is just 2 days. We'll be leaving for New York the day after the celebration.” I heard him say calmly after he let out a sign.
“Of course. Great then, we'll meet in a few hours. Bon Voyage.” I turned my chair back to my desk and clicked on the first mail I have to reply to.
“Okay then, Angel. I'll see you in a few hours.” I smiled at his calm yet excited voice and we hung up the call.
It was already afternoon and Adam would be in London in less than 10 hours. I signed and kept my phone aside as I started with my work.
Two years flew by like a day. It has been two years, dad passed away. It has been two years since I heard or saw Olivia and Noah. It has been two years since I got the best life partner anyone would ever desire. But the time flew so fast that I never really got my hands on the stuff that would surely make me cry.
The two years of a long-distance relationship with Adam was nothing I expected. He was a safe place for me, that is immaterial yet is the safest place I'll ever be. I can not describe it in words but it is a feeling of wholeness that I feel when I know there will be always this special connection between us that will make me feel loved, better, happy and content.
We haven't met since I left New York the day after we celebrated Adam’s Birthday. But we did chat and talked a lot over the calls and Skype.
I shook my head and took up the work in my hands. As apart from my personal life, I also became the CEO of the corporation a year ago. It happened when Mr Trivedi met an accident and was hospitalised for two months. Thankfully there were no internal bleeding and swelling. He officially handed over the power of attorney to me a week after his accident.
It was just after two days of my birthday last year and it didn't worry me much cause I was more than ready by that time.
After two months of rest, He joined the company again as the CFO of the Steel’s. I was more than relaxed after he came back to work with no plasters and bandages over his head. As for Mr Velvet, he was arrested for a murder attempt.
Yup, He was the one who wanted to get the post of CFO permanently. He knew that Mr Trivedi will be back in his post of CFO after a year and he will yet again become just a member of the Board of Trustees. Let's just say he is neither of them now.
After completing my work and giving James instructions to make sure about the shifting of the head office, I left for the home.
It has been nearly two months since I started settling the head office of Steel Ins. & Co. at New York. I knew I was going to live in New York for the rest of my life, why won't I be prepared. I even had to visit the New York office a few times to check on the official works and management.
All those times, Adam would be out of States or I would have been gone there just for few hours of the usual check. We weren't able to meet once. Though I Did meet Dad and Mia a few times. And yes, I started calling uncle Ethan, dad after he threatened me that he will be starting his office again.
After doing work like there is no tomorrow and missing the family functions for the sake of business parties, I guess the man deserves an early retirement. We still ask for his opinion on several occasions though.
It was already 6:30 pm. I usually stay at the office till 8:00 as Mrs Paul prepares the dinner for me but since I have to do it myself today, I was off to home early.
I sat in my matt white Mercedes Maybach Exelero and drove through my private parking lot with Mr Smith’s SUV right behind mine. It was an only professional relationship between me and Lucas. We didn't talk like friends and we didn't pretend to be one. After the professionalism lecture given by me at the starting of his post, it has always been like this.
I parked my car at the front door and took my sling bag and coat before leaving the car. Mrs Paul was waiting for me in the living room and took my coat from me.
“Good evening Miss Steel. I've arranged everything as per your instructions and the staff was instructed to leave early. If you want I can arrange a thing or two of you want.” She said in her natural polite way. I shook my head and smiled.
“I’ll be fine Mrs Paul. Thank you. And can you please overlook the preparation for leaving? If you have time, that is.” I took my heels off and wore the comfortable house flip-flops.
“Sure, ma'am.” Moving up to my room I took my phone out of my sling bad and went to the bathroom.
Taking a shower always relaxes me and after sitting on the chair for a whole day, my muscles need a good hot shower for relaxation. I pulled my hair up to a messy bun and wore my shorts with one of Adam’s hoodie.
After rolling the long sleeves of the grey hoodie up and keeping my phone into my white shorts I left my room and went straight to the kitchen.
Playing the music on the speakers, I started to prepare all the favourites for him. It took me a while to prepare for the dinner. But as I was giving the final touches to the dish, the opening of the front door made me leave everything and run to the entrance.
“I can't say enough thanks to you, man.” I saw Adam taking his bad in one hand as he talked over the call. Two years of long-distance relationship worked its magic and I jumped at him with my legs warped around his waist and hands around his neck.
Adam closed the door, leaving his bag aside and engulfed me in his strong arm, I heard the line end and felt Adam warp his second arm around me and buried his head in my neck.
“I missed you, too Angel.” His voice was so calming that I felt myself relax in his deep velvety voice made me smile at the realisation that he is here, with me and now he'll always be.
