Chapter 4

Ahana's POV: I was sitting in my room doing my work after having my lunch. I was happy. The exhibition we organized yesterday went better than I thought it would. I worked hard for that exhibition- 10 paintings in 4 months. I didn’t expect every one of my paintings to get sold out at the highest price possible. Dadda and Bhaiya were so proud of me and that made me the happiest. But Dadi. She didn’t look so happy and didn’t even bless or congratulate me. Sometimes I don’t understand her behavior towards me. I try to make her happy and help her with everything she needs. But she always gave me a cold shoulder. My bedroom door opened slowly and Bhaiya appeared. I kept my laptop aside. “Hi pumpkin!” he chirped entering my room with a box in his hands. “What’s that?” I pointed at the box. He kept the box on the desk and sat in front of me. “What happened pumpkin? You don’t look so good. You okay?” he frowned and held my hands. “Nothing. I was thinking about Dadi. Bhaiya, I don’t understand why she always acts like that with me. She didn’t even congratulate me.” I said as tears welled up in my eyes. Bhaiya sighed and engulfed me in a warm hug. He always knew when I needed a hug. He caressed my hair and said, “Don’t think too much about her pumpkin. You did so well you know. You made me and Papa proud.” He pulled back and wiped my tears. “Please don’t cry, Ahana. You know it hurts me seeing you cry like this. You did your best and I’m so proud of you.” He stood up and walked towards the desk. He picked up the box and walked back to me. He sat in front of me and handed me the box. “To celebrate your success I bought your favorite pastry. Congratulations my pumpkin!” he said placing a kiss on my forehead. I smiled. “Thank you so much, Bhaiya! You are the best!” I grinned at him. He smacked my head and opened the box. I giggled seeing chocolate truffle pastry. We both ate the pastry and he told me about my birthday arrangements. “Acha, Ahana listen. You have to go shopping today.” I scoffed at his words. He frowned at me. “What Bhaiya! Seriously? Shopping and me? There’s no way I’m going for shopping. It’s so exhausting. And you know I’m tired.” I said as I wrapped myself in the duvet. “No no no no. This won’t work this time pumpkin. Come on. Your birthday is tomorrow and you need to go and buy a beautiful dress. You stupid! You will go and buy whatever you like for your birthday. You understand?” he said pulling the duvet and making me stand. I rolled my eyes at him and he smacked my head. “Ouch!” I said rubbing my head. He handed me my phone and said. “Call Sakshi. She’ll join you I already informed her. She will be here soon.” I walked towards him. I kept my head on his chest and hugged him. He immediately wrapped his hands around me patting my back. “Thank you, Bhaiya. I love you so much!” I mumbled and he chuckled. “I love you too my pumpkin.” He said pulling back and cupping my cheeks. “Remember one thing, Ahana. Your Neil Bhaiya is always with you no matter what happens. Hmm?” he said in a very soft tone. I nodded. He kissed my forehead and left. Sometimes I wonder what deeds have I done that I got a brother like him. I walked into the bathroom and washed my face. I quickly got ready. I wore a pink kurti with blue jeans. I also wore a small pair of jhumkas. I walked out of my room taking my purse and phone. I rushed downstairs and saw Sakshi already waiting for me. She was sitting on the couch with Bhaiya. I walked towards them. Sakshi stood up and came towards me. “How are you Ana?” she asked me to which I said. “I’m fine. Abhi Chalein? I have a lot to talk about.” She giggled and dragged me out of my house. “Be careful pumpkin!” I heard Bhaiya shouting. We walked towards her car. I settled myself in the passenger seat. She sat in the car and turned to face me. “Spit it out!!” she sounded way more excited than I was. She’s always been like this. Joyful and charming. I told her everything that happened in the last couple of days. When I was done her eyes were wide open. “Ana you are thinking too much about him! I mean it’s been eight f*****g years since you saw him in person! I know that you had a crush on him back in high school but don’t worry much baby. And I don’t think he’ll show up honestly. He owns the biggest security company in the company Ana and he'd be busy.”She was right. He won’t show up. I’ve heard a lot about him. He is a grumpy man and doesn’t like parties and stuff. And I can bet he doesn’t even remember me. Ughh. But why the hell am I thinking this much about him? She started driving and soon we reached the mall. The whole drive all I could think about was him. I shrugged off my thoughts and stepped outside the car. We entered the mall. I looked around the stores and started picking up clothes suitable for the party. After almost 4 hours we were done. I bought a dress and some jewelry. I was so tired. I just want to go home and sleep. Before I could say something Sakshi groaned and said. “Ana let’s go and eat something. I’m hungry. Please.” She gave me those puppy eyes. She knows I can’t say no to her. “Okay okay, fine baba! We’ll go straight home after this” I sighed and she grinned at me dragging me to the food court. She ordered pizza for her and I ordered pasta. “I can’t wait to see you in that dress Ana! I bet you’ll be so f*****g hot” she said eating her pizza. “Oh shut up Sakshi focus on your food!” I chuckled. She never left any chances to compliment and tease me. “Acha sun. You have to come early and help me get ready ok?” I said and she nodded. We finished our food and drove back home. Sakshi dropped me and left. I walked inside my house. Everyone was settled at the dining table having dinner. Neil Bhaiya saw me and smiled. “Done shopping?” he teased me. I rolled my eyes and sat on the chair beside him. “I’m so tired,” I said resting my head on his shoulder. “Oh, my poor pumpkin! You want food?” he cooed. I shook my head no. I heard Dadda laughing. I looked at him in confusion. “You both are so cute! Beta what did you eat?” he asked me. “I ate pasta and you know Dadda shopping is so hard. I had to try every outfit I liked! That’s why I hate shopping.” I sighed. Everyone burst out laughing. Dadi too joined after seeing Dadda laughing. I smiled. “Okay now at least show us what you bought pumpkin!” Bhaiya said controlling his laughter. “No no no. I won’t show you anything. You’ll see yourself tomorrow.” I teased him. “Dadda Bhaiya, I’m going to my room. If you need anything call me.” I stood up and ruffled Bhaiya’s hair. They both nodded and I went upstairs to my room. I kept the bag in my closet and took a shower. I changed in my night clothes and hopped on my bed covering myself in the duvet. I looked at the ceiling and smiled remembering my mother. I closed my eyes and saw her. “I’m always with you honey” her voice echoed in my ears and I opened my eyes. I felt very excited about my birthday for some reason. I’ve never been this excited for my birthday before. No matter how much I tried my mind went back to him. I know he won’t show up but deep down I wished to see him. You still like him b***h! My consy said. No, I don’t Shut up! I decided to shrug it off and drifted to sleep.
