Prologue – Found in the Woods
The sun filtered softly through the canopy, casting dappled light across the forest floor. Thorian and Serenya had chosen this quiet glade for a rare afternoon picnic, a moment to step away from the duties of leadership and simply breathe. Spread out on a blanket were baskets of food, a small fire crackling nearby, and laughter that belonged to a family, not just a pack.
Darian and Lucian, though still children themselves, were running along the edge of the clearing, chasing each other in mock duels, their identical features and synchronized movements drawing smiles from their parents. Serenya leaned back against a tree, savoring the warmth of the sun, while Thorian kept a watchful eye on his family, ever protective even in this peaceful moment.
Then came the sound: a tiny, desperate cry from the woods.
Thorian tensed immediately, his wolf stirring beneath the surface, alert and cautious. Serenya’s hand went to his arm. “Did you hear that?” she whispered.
“Someone’s out there,” he murmured, rising and signaling the twins to stay put. The cries came again, small and fragile, but unmistakably human. Serenya followed closely as Thorian moved toward the source, stepping carefully over roots and fallen leaves.
There, nestled between the roots of an ancient oak, was a tiny infant, swaddled in tattered blankets. Her delicate chest rose and fell with soft, steady breaths, and her wide eyes blinked up at them. She was clearly human, so small and vulnerable, and yet… something about her stirred a strange recognition in Thorian’s wolf, a pulse of energy he couldn’t explain.
Serenya lifted the child into her arms, holding her close. “She’s so small… so alone,” she murmured, her voice trembling with immediate love and protectiveness.
Thorian studied the child carefully. She is human, he told himself, yet his wolf growled softly, sensing an unusual, suppressed energy beneath her fragile form. “We bring her home,” he said finally, voice low and certain. “She belongs with us.”
The twins peered from the clearing, wide-eyed, their small hands reaching for the baby as if they had known her forever. A distant wolf’s howl echoed through the trees, almost like a greeting, and Thorian felt the tiniest spark of something extraordinary beneath it all.
Though they believed her human, the little girl’s fate was entwined with the forest, the pack, and a destiny no one yet understood — not even her.
