Dream
His biggest dream was to work in the tall shiny building that he could see standing over the rest of the city from his house.
Liam could see the tall structure from his bedroom window, his cocoa brown eyes examining the steel and glass towering over everything. He always wondered what went on in that building since he was a kid. When he asked his parents, his dad told him "average people things".
That was all it took to get Liam hooked; he's always wanted to do average people things.
It was difficult for him growing up, unable to go to sleepovers or hang out too late. Missing parties that went on for hours into the night. Once he hit the ages where he started to show his signs, his "average" life was over.
Being a secret werewolf was hard.
The world was accepting of his kind... sort of. It was understood that werewolves didn't ask to be born that way, and regardless they weren't any different from humans, but it was very clear that it was much easier to go as human opposed to “monster”.
Liam never liked being a werewolf anyway. His parents tried to convince him that maybe hiding his true self from close friends wasn’t the best idea, but he did not want to take the chance of becoming “wolf-boy” in class among the majority of his human peers. The only person who knew him through and through was his neighbor and best friend, Max.
Max happened to be peeking out of his window the night of Liam’s first transformation, and though all he saw was a few extra hairs and elongated teeth, the guy never let that memory out of his head. Since then, he was stuck to Liam like glue, not that the latter could complain since he shied away from many of the possible friends he could have made.
Max knew of Liam’s obsession over that tall building in the distance. He always gushed about it throughout high school, and when selecting their colleges Liam ensured to apply for schools in or near the city that had good business majors. Max coincidentally was interested in Computer Science, so the pair ended up in the same university, just blocks away from the building that Liam walked by at least once a week.
Max also knew of Liam’s other obsession that was related to that building-- the man who owned it. In fact, he owned many headquarters across the globe, each making him more money by the day. The man of all Liam’s dreams, Kellian Santos.
Liam found out about that man as a sophomore in high school-- one google search made fall in love at first sight. Not just because the CEO was hot and nearly anyone would drop to their knees for him, but because he was the only “average” person Liam could look up to. The only person he aspired to be.
He thought about it at least once a day, gazing out of his dorm window at the tall building that could seemingly solve all of his problems. He would sigh dreamily, imagining himself clocking in for work in a fancy business suit, hosting meetings and scheduling appointments; taking care of important tasks that only Kellian Santos entrusted him with. It was right there in front of him, he could almost touch it...
“What are you doing?”
Liam spun around on his chair, letting out a heavy sigh at the sight of his friend. Despite them living just a little ways outside of the city, Liam decided to dorm at their university so he could gaze at his dream job up close everyday, and he simply dragged Max along with him. They requested to be roommates on the first day of orientation.
“Nothing… finishing homework.” He replied, raking a hand through his dark brown hair.
“No, I caught you trying to stare into Kellian’s window again, perv.” Max threw his bag beside his bed before dropping himself atop it. His bed was across from Liam's, their desks side by side beside them.
“Am not, he doesn’t even live in there dummy. I’m just… thinking.”
“About how you wanna make out with him?”
Liam scoffed, tugging a pillow off of his bed and launching it across the room. “Shut up.”
Max chuckled as the pillow hit his leg, taking his turn to throw it back. “Dude come on, I know those werewolf instincts awaken just when you look at a pic of him.”
“You don’t know how werewolves work.” Liam retorted. He had lost interest in his economy homework at this point, now mindlessly twirling in his chair. “I don’t stare at pics of him all day either, I just… think about meeting him a lot…”
“That’s why you signed up for that tour and internship huh.”
Liam suddenly brightened, his lips curling up in the corners as he was reminded of the event going on the next week. “I’ve never been in that building. Only stared at it for years. Finally I get to see what goes on in there, and if I get that internship, maybe I could meet him…”
“Who? Santos? No way dude, he’s not gonna meet some random college students, especially not interns.” Max sat up, his legs dangling off the side of his bed, blonde hair glistening in the golden sun of the late afternoon. “Besides, you already know what goes on in there. All the projects and homework you do will be your life behind those glass panes.”
“So? I like it, especially if it feels like I’m contributing to something.”
“Yeah, contributing to making someone else richer…”
“Dude!” Liam whined, abruptly halting his spinning. “This is the closest I can be to being normal. You know how much it means to me.”
Max sighed, his clear blue eyes falling to his lap. “I know, I know… but you are normal Liam. So what if you get hairy a couple of nights a year?”
“It’s not normal.” Liam snapped. “All my life I’ve been looking forward to the day I can feel like just any other human. I want the perfect normal life, this is my first step. You should at least support me.”
“I do! I always have!” The slightly shorter male exclaimed. He cleared his throat, gazing down at his knees again. “I just want you to realize you don’t have to do all this just to be normal, but if that’s what you wanna do I can’t stop you. I’ll always support you.”
“Great, then come with me.”
Max nearly fell off his bed. “W-What?”
“They have an internship for tech specialists! It is a tech company anyway, you could totally apply!”
“Listen man, I follow you almost everywhere but I refuse to work in that building.”
Liam scoffed as if he were offended on behalf of the company. “Why not!? It’ll be great experience, and you know I hate doing things alone.”
“I want to try and build my own startup tech company, remember? I’m gonna be the tech expert and you’re supposed to be my business guy? What happened to that plan?” Max asked.
“With what money? You haven’t had a real job your entire life, what do you expect to build anything with $0?”
Max tried to come up with a response, only to fall short. He huffed in frustration while Liam smirk; the best feeling was cornering someone into speechlessness.
“Right, that’s what I thought. You come with me on the tour and apply for the internship, we work hard and network, and the money we get goes straight into your startup idea, how's that?”
Liam groaned, falling back onto his bed. “Whatever! Just know I’m doing this for you so you can drool over Kellian Santos like the fanboy you are.”
“Shut up.” Liam retorted while launching his pillow back at Max, hitting him square in the face.
