Charlotte's pov
How is she?" I asked immediately after I got to the hospital. "She is in the theater room now" I sighed and sat beside waiting for the surgery to be over.
As the hours dragged on, my anxiety spiraled out of control. I paced back and forth, my feet wearing a path on the floor as my mind raced with worst-case scenarios.
The silence was deafening, punctuated only by the ticking of the clock, which seemed to mock me with its slow, steady beat. I felt trapped, helpless, and utterly alone.
Even the nanny's presence had been a comfort, but I knew I had to send her back to the orphanage. The child needed her. The thought of facing this uncertainty by myself was terrifying, but I forced myself to stay strong, my heart heavy with worry.
"Charlotte" I opened my heavy eyes and saw Mark coming out of the room.
"Who is she? Is she okay now?"
"She is stable now," he smiled at me. I couldn't help the tears of joy coming from my eyes.
"Thank you, thank you, can I see her?" I was so happy.
"She is being transferred to her room, give her some time and be careful handling her, she will be under investigation and care for some days"
She was sleeping and I took a seat beside her and watched her sleep. She has lost a lot of weight. She looks pale and fragile.
"I fulfilled my promise, Amy, I did," I whispered, my lips brushing against her hand in a gentle kiss. Exhaustion finally claimed me, and I surrendered to sleep, my head sinking into the softness of the bed.
But my rest was short-lived when I felt a small hand touch my face, and I opened my eyes to find Amy's bright smile shining down at me. "Am I still sick?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
I shook my head, relief washing over me as I pulled her into a tight hug. "You're safe now," I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. Her trust in me was a weighty responsibility, one that I was determined to carry.
"I knew you would save me, Char," she said, her words a balm to my soul. Her faith in me was unwavering, and it solidified my resolve to do whatever it took to protect her.
“Nanny” she called out from behind me, I smiled as they shared a hug. I stepped outside, giving them a moment, while I collected my thoughts.
"Thank you for saving the little girl's life" The nanny appreciated when I sat beside her outside the room.
"I won't have allowed her to suffer"
"I went to the reception and I was told all the bills have been paid including her checkups in the orphanage" What? Checkups? I only told him about the surgery, I didn't know he asked for that too.
"Hmm yes I got the money" She nodded but my tone was dismissive so she didn't pry further which I was grateful for.
For the next few days, I stayed with Amelia in the hospital, changing and spending the night there. I didn't want her to go through anything so I stayed with her.
It was time for her to go back to the orphanage and a cab was waiting for us outside with the nanny. "Be careful Amy" I cautioned her as she was jumping, playing with her doll
"I am fine now char" I rolled my eyes and held her hand carrying her bag and mine along with me.
"Thank you Charlotte" The nanny collected her bag from me and helped her inside the cab "Are you not coming with me?" Amelia asked me, looking so cute. I pinched her cheeks lightly and kissed it.
"I have to do something, I will come check up on you, greet the other kids for me, and take care of yourself" She nodded with a pout.
"Thank you," The nanny said and I nodded at the nanny. I watch the driver drive away. I wish to follow her and see the other kids but I have a situation to handle.
I went inside the restaurant and he asked me to meet him. I felt odd with the pair of jeans and tank top I wore. "I am here to meet Mr. Norman," I told the receptionist and she eyed me before telling me where to find him.
He booked a table in the VIP lounge. I saw him sitting down while on his phone and I approached him. "You are late Miss Green" Before I could say a word he raised his head and looked at my dress before looking at my face. "You are my fiance, you shouldn't be looking like a pig"
"Good afternoon too Mr. Norman, I am good thank you" I took my seat before him. "Why did you ask me to meet you here?" He forwarded a new contract to me.
"The adjustment is there, check it" I collected it and scanned it.
"What is this? You didn't ask me to bear you a child"
"I know my grandfather and he might notice foul play, he is smart" I was still confused
"Then why do I have to conceive after a year?" I asked.
"I thought you were smart Miss Green'' he mocked me. "Grandfather will be receiving treatment and if he will recover he has to know we are married and if he won't make it in a year and half, you don't need to bear me a child" he explained. This is hard.
"I can't leave my child" I stated clearly. "You can come visit once in a month." Why is he so heartless? How will he tell me to leave my child after delivery?
I won't leave my child with anyone. I will find a way to stay in my child's life if I have to conceive for him. I just need to think of something if it happens.
"Whatever, just sign the new contract". I looked at the contract and he gave me a pen. He came prepared.
He gave some silly rules about not invading his privacy, acting all lovey-dovey in public, not having any relationships outside the marriage, not telling anyone of the contract, and many other rules.
Not like I am interested in staying in the same space as him. I signed the contract and gave it to him. "Can I go now?" I stood up.
"We are going to see my grandfather for dinner, someone will come over to make you over. I don't want you to look…" he looked at me with disgust and looked into my eyes "Ordinary"
Arrogant, rude, and annoying grandson of Andrew. I wanted to say what was at the tip of my tongue when he stood up and walked out.
How will I survive a month with him not to talk for a year or two? I might go mad with his behavior.
As he said, I heard a knock on my door, it was a lady whose voice was so annoying. She was telling me all that needed to be done for me. I told her I was going to get something for us and I ditched her.
Once it was almost time for dinner, I took a cab to the mansion dressed casually. the security won't let me in so I had to use other means to enter.
I was forced to resort to more creative measures to gain access. My plan succeeded, and I sprinted across the grounds, my breathless gasps echoing through the night air as I burst into the house.
Still trying to catch my breath, I froze as a hand grasped mine, halting my escape. Panic set in - I was trapped, and I would surely be mistaken for a burglar! But as I turned to face my captor, I relaxed slightly, recognizing Damien's voice and his piercing gaze.
A wide smile spread across my face as I met his eyes, a mix of relief and mischief dancing in my expression.
"Why are you trying to hide Miss Green?”
"I was about to check up on Andrew since you were running late"I said. He was angry. I could feel the anger emitting from him.
"Why did you run from the lady I sent to get you ready for tonight?" I shrugged my shoulder "I had urgent work"
"Are you seeing my grandfather as my fiancé dressed like that?" What is wrong with what I am wearing?
"Not like he hasn't seen me like this before". I shrugged my shoulders and he looked at me hard.
"If not for Grandfather, I wouldn't be here exchanging words with you" he mumbled and I smirked.
"You'd rather be with women partying, right?" I wanted to irritate him more, but his actions surprised me. He started taking steps closer to me, which made me take some steps back, hitting my back on the wall, and he used his two hands to block the way, caging me.
"Mr. Norman, you are invading my privacy." The smirk on my face came off. "Mr. Norman? What is wrong with my name?" He asked in distaste. "Are you not Mr Norman again?" I asked innocently. Is he dumb?
"My name is Damien." I won't call him that. That makes it look like we are on a personal level.
"Mr. Norman, step back before I shout". He smirked. "You want to give my grandfather a wrong idea, then go on"
"Just leave me," I said with a tight voice. He bent his head slightly to the side and I panicked and called his name "Damien".
We heard something falling, and he swiftly let me go, putting enough space between us and I made contact with the person who made an appearance.
My eyes grew big, and I felt like hiding somewhere no one could see me. Grandfather was standing in the hall. “Andrew, it is not what it appears like”, I tried explaining.
