CHAPTER TWELVE
The Lesson of Shadows
Morning broke beneath heavy clouds.
The sun never truly rose over Ebon Hollow.
Instead, a pale gray light filtered through the mist, casting long shadows across the academy grounds.
Luna adjusted her cloak as she crossed the courtyard.
The previous night's conversation with Mira lingered in her thoughts.
"I've never seen anyone return from beneath the East Library unchanged."
The silver key rested safely in her satchel.
She hadn't touched it.
Not once.
Yet she found herself checking for it every few minutes, as though afraid it might disappear.
"You look exhausted."
Rowan fell into step beside her, balancing his usual stack of books beneath one arm.
"I didn't sleep well."
"I'm not surprised."
He studied her for a moment.
"You're thinking about the library."
Luna looked at him.
"Is it that obvious?"
"You've been reaching for your satchel every five minutes."
She immediately lowered her hand.
"I didn't even realize I was doing that."
Rowan smiled.
"You rarely do."
Before Luna could reply, the academy bell echoed across the grounds.
Students changed direction at once, making their way toward a circular stone building she hadn't entered before.
Its walls were covered in climbing ivy, while enormous stained-glass windows reflected the gloomy morning sky.
Above the entrance, carved into black marble, were two words.
Applied Shadows.
Luna frowned.
"...That's a subject?"
"It is here."
The classroom resembled an ancient observatory more than a lecture hall.
Rows of curved desks surrounded a circular floor engraved with intricate silver markings.
Towering shelves lined the walls, holding objects Luna couldn't identify.
Crystal spheres.
Ancient masks.
Jars filled with black sand.
And books bound in leather so old they looked ready to crumble at a touch.
Professor Vale stood at the center of the room.
As always, his charcoal suit was immaculate, and his fountain pen rested neatly in his breast pocket.
When the last student entered, the heavy doors closed on their own.
No one reacted.
As though it happened every day.
Professor Vale glanced around the room.
"Today's lesson is simple."
He picked up a small silver candle from the table.
"It concerns perception."
Without striking a match...
The candle ignited.
A cold blue flame danced silently above the wick.
Several first-year students exchanged nervous glances.
Professor Vale continued as though nothing unusual had happened.
"There is a common misconception."
He slowly turned the candle in his hand.
"People believe shadows exist because light is absent."
He paused.
"The opposite is often true."
With a gentle movement, he placed the candle in the center of the silver markings.
The blue flame brightened.
Every shadow in the room shifted.
Not with the candle.
Against it.
Luna stared.
The shadow beneath her desk stretched across the floor...
Then stopped.
It looked wrong.
Almost...
Alive.
"Remain where you are," Professor Vale said calmly.
"No matter what you think you see."
The room fell silent.
The blue flame flickered once.
Twice.
Then every student's shadow began moving independently.
Gasps echoed around the classroom.
One girl squeezed her eyes shut.
Another gripped the edge of her desk until her knuckles turned white.
Luna's heart pounded.
Her own shadow slowly lifted its head.
It shouldn't have been possible.
Shadows didn't have heads.
Yet...
It was looking directly at her.
"Do not panic," Professor Vale instructed.
"The shadow is merely reflecting what your mind refuses to acknowledge."
Luna couldn't tear her eyes away.
For a heartbeat...
She thought she saw someone standing inside her shadow.
A tall figure.
Unclear.
Watching her.
Then—
The blue flame vanished.
Every shadow snapped back into place.
The classroom was silent except for the students' uneven breathing.
Professor Vale looked around the room.
"Excellent."
"As expected..."
He calmly opened his notebook.
"Miss Hart remained standing."
Several students turned to look at Luna.
She blinked.
"I... what?"
"You did not move."
"You did not scream."
"You observed."
He gave the faintest nod.
"That is the difference between fear..."
His gaze met hers.
"...and understanding."
The lesson ended with another solemn toll of the academy bell.
Students filed out quietly, speaking in hushed voices.
Many glanced nervously toward Luna before quickly looking away.
As she stepped into the corridor, she heard someone behind her.
"Miss Hart."
She turned.
Professor Vale stood alone in the doorway.
"There is something I wish to ask you."
Luna approached.
"Yes, Professor?"
He regarded her carefully.
"When your shadow looked back at you..."
His voice was as calm as ever.
"...what did you see?"
Luna hesitated.
The image flashed through her mind again.
The tall figure.
Hidden within the darkness.
Watching.
She drew a slow breath.
"I don't know."
Professor Vale studied her for several long seconds.
Then, almost to himself, he murmured,
"...Interesting."
Without another word, he turned and walked back into the empty classroom, leaving Luna alone in the corridor.
For the first time since arriving at Ebon Hollow...
She wasn't certain the shadows belonged to the light anymore.
