CHAPTER ONE
The New AssistantEthan hated rich people.Especially rich people who wore black suits and looked like they had never suffered a single day in their lives.Unfortunately, his new boss was exactly that.“Mr. Vale is waiting for you.”The secretary’s voice made Ethan straighten his cheap tie nervously. He stared at the giant office doors in front of him.Vale Corporation.Top company in the city. Millions of dollars. Terrifying reputation. And somehow, after twenty failed interviews and one overdue rent payment, Ethan had gotten the job.“Try not to annoy him,” the secretary whispered before walking away.Too late for that.Ethan pushed the doors open carefully. The office was massive. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline, dark shelves lined the walls, and the smell of expensive cologne filled the room. Then he saw him.Adrian Vale.Sitting behind a sleek black desk like the king of the entire world.God.The rumors were true. The man was unfairly handsome.Sharp jawline. Cold gray eyes. Black hair pushed back neatly. His sleeves rolled slightly to reveal veined hands resting against a file.He looked up slowly.Ethan immediately felt like prey.“You’re late,” Adrian said calmly.Ethan blinked. “By thirty seconds.”“Still late.”What an asshole.Ethan forced a smile. “Nice to meet you too, sir.”Adrian studied him silently for a moment. The silence stretched too long. Then—“You talk too much.”Ethan almost laughed.“You judged that in under a minute?”“Yes.”Wow. Definitely an asshole.Adrian closed the file in front of him. “Your previous employers described you as difficult.”“They also underpaid me.”A dangerous smirk appeared briefly on Adrian’s lips.Just for a second. But Ethan noticed it.And somehow, that tiny expression was hotter than it should’ve been.“Interesting,” Adrian murmured.Ethan suddenly had a very bad feeling about this job.Because for the first time since entering the office—His terrifying boss looked interested in him.
Chapter 2
Late NightsWorking for Adrian Vale was exhausting.Ethan barely survived the first week. His boss was cold, demanding, and annoyingly perfect at everything.“Redo this.”“Fix the schedule.”“You missed a detail.”At this point Ethan was convinced Adrian didn’t sleep. But the worst part?Adrian kept staring at him.Not normal staring. The kind that made Ethan nervous for no reason. One Friday night, Ethan was alone in the office finishing reports when thunder shook the windows outside. The entire building was nearly empty. He sighed tiredly and stretched in his chair.“You’re still here.”Ethan jumped.Adrian stood near the doorway, his black coat hanging over one arm.“You scared me,” Ethan complained.“You scare easily.”“No, you just walk around like a serial killer.”Adrian actually laughed softly.Ethan froze.Wait.His boss could laugh?Adrian loosened his tie slowly. “Why haven’t you gone home?”“Because somebody gave me thirty files.”“You’re slow.”“You’re evil.”Another small smile appeared on Adrian’s face.God.That smile should honestly be illegal.Rain slammed harder against the windows.Ethan looked outside nervously. “Great. I forgot my umbrella.”Adrian picked up his car keys. “I’ll drive you.”Ethan blinked. “Seriously?”“Yes.”The drive home was awkwardly quiet.Adrian’s expensive car smelled like coffee and cologne.Ethan tried not to stare at him.Tried and failed.Streetlights flashed across Adrian’s face while he drove calmly with one hand on the wheel.“How old are you?” Adrian suddenly asked.“Twenty-four.”Adrian nodded once. “Too young.”Ethan frowned. “For what?”Adrian looked at him briefly.“For me.”Silence.Ethan’s heart stopped.“…What?”But Adrian only looked back at the road.“You should sleep when you get home,” he said calmly. “You look tired.”Ethan stared at him in complete confusion. And for the rest of the night—He could not stop thinking about what Adrian meant.
Chapter 3
The RumorMonday morning was chaos.Employees whispered the moment Adrian walked past.Ethan noticed the stares immediately.“What happened?” he asked another worker quietly. The woman hesitated. Then she leaned closer.“There’s a rumor the CEO likes men.”Ethan nearly choked on his coffee.“What?!”“Shhh!”She glanced around nervously.“They said he dated a male actor years ago.”Ethan laughed awkwardly. “People make up crazy things.”But then—His mind remembered Adrian’s voice in the car.Too young for me.Ethan suddenly felt warm.No way.No freaking way.At lunch, Ethan entered Adrian’s office carefully.“You wanted these files signed?”Adrian took the papers without looking up.Then calmly asked:“Are you avoiding me?”Ethan almost dropped everything.“What? No.”“You’ve been nervous all morning.”“I’m always nervous around you.”That made Adrian look up slowly.
Their eyes met. the room suddenly felt too small. Adrian stood from his chair and walked closer. too close. Ethan's breathing because uneven. "you ask too much questions," Adrian said quietly.
”And you say weird thing's Adrian tilled his head slightly. “such as?" Ethan swallowed
