Faye's POV
My stepbrother's ragged breathing sounded through my ear. Bile formed at the pit of my stomach as his weight pinned me to the floor of the dark room, his hand twisted tight in my hair.
"Stay still and be quiet. Like the weak little omega you are." His voice came out slurred and cruel.
A tear slipped from my eyes, but my body went rigid on instinct, bracing for the next blow.
"Don't look at me like that. You know you deserve this."
No I don't. But I couldn't say that because he had stuffed my mouth with a cloth and pasted tape over it.
I was unable to make any sound. His fist drove into my ribs and pain bloomed through my side but I could only make stifled noises.
"How does it feel? To be at my mercy with nobody coming to save you? You love to make noises but this time our parents are home, so we'll keep it quiet." He said and I shook my head.
The words in my mouth were right there just at the tip of my tongue, waiting to come out. I tried again to get past the obstacle in my mouth as both pain and fury shot through me.
"I'm not a f*****g omega!" The words finally tore out from me but instead I was sitting in the cramped dark room of my studio apartment, breathing hard and soaked in sweat.
I had another nightmare. Or would I say the memories haunted me yet again. I pressed a shaking hand to my ribs, where the ache of the memory still lingered, and cursed myself.
"What a coward you've become. Still shaking over your stepbrother after all this time?"
I opened my drawer shakily, holding up my phone torch. I stopped short staring at the empty container and groaned. All this happened because of the stupid omega heat. The stupid aspect of myself that I wanted to get rid of. But my suppressant had run out.
They were really expensive and I had done anything just to get them and keep telling the lie that I was a werewolf Beta who hadn't gotten her wolf yet.
Better to be bullied for being a wolfless Beta than a human omega.
It was already morning so I took a shower hastily, avoiding the mirror as always. I couldn't stare at the creep looking back at me.
I walked out of the house with just one thing in mind. I needed suppressants before the end of today when the full wave of the suppressed heat would knock me out. The last of my worries would be the ghost of my stepbrother.
I tied my long hair up into a short ponytail, trying to look as ordinary and unremarkable as possible. I had run away from home to the eastern part of the city and had tried to get more suppressants, but it had actually given me debt.
The suppressants were expensive and my job at the wholesale station barely covered my rent and food.
I had been borrowing money just to stay functional, to keep the omega inside me hidden from everyone who would use it against me.
The world I lived in was one where werewolves and Vampires lived and reigned supreme and the human race was diminishing.
So finding a human omega was very rare.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out, seeing my friend Sean's name on the screen. I answered quickly, my voice still rough from sleep.
"Sean? What's going on? It's early."
"Faye, you need to get to work right now." His voice was urgent and hushed, like he was trying not to be overheard.
"Why? What happened?"
"Your name is on the list of fired employees on the board. They posted it this morning. I don't know why, but you're on it."
I stopped walking, my heart dropping into my stomach. "That can't be right. I've been working there for two years. I've never been late. I've never missed a shift. Why would they fire me?"
"I don't know, girl. Just get here as fast as you can. Maybe you can talk to the manager before they finalize everything."
"Okay, okay. I'm coming." I ended the call and started running.
I couldn't lose this job. If I lost this job, I couldn't afford my rent. I couldn't afford food. And I definitely couldn't afford the suppressants I desperately needed.
My heat was already threatening to surface and without the suppressants, I would be exposed. Everyone would know what I really was.
I ran through the dark alleys, my feet pounding against the concrete.
I was so focused on getting to work that I didn't see the object in front of me until it was too late.
Something tripped me and I fell flat on my face, my hands scraping against the rough ground. Pain shot through my palms and I groaned, trying to push myself up.
But before I could get to my feet, two big bulky figures towered over me, blocking out the light.
I recognized them instantly. Don and Marcus. The loan sharks I had been borrowing money from for months.
"Faye. We've been looking for you." Don's voice was hoarse. His face was scarred and his eyes were cold.
I scrambled to find footing, trying to back away from them. But a punch landed against my jaw and I was knocked back down to the ground. The taste of blood filled my mouth and I coughed, spitting it out onto the concrete.
"Please, I'll pay you. I just need more time. I'll get the money, I promise."
"You've been saying that for four months now." Marcus crouched down beside me, his voice mocking. "And the interest has changed. You owe us eight times the actual amount of interest now."
My eyes widened in horror. "That's impossible. The interest was already eighty percent. How can I owe eight times that amount? Where am I supposed to get that kind of money from?"
Don grabbed me by my shirt and yanked me up, slamming me against the wall. The rough brick scraped against my back and I winced in pain.
"We should ask what you use your money to do when you still look like trash." Don's eyes scanned me from head to toe, taking in my worn clothes and tired face.
Marcus stepped closer, his eyes glinting with something dark. "One pretty face you have there. But I'm going to ruin it if you don't start talking. Where is our money?"
I opened my mouth to answer, to beg or promise anything. But before I could speak, something changed in the air around me. A wave of warmth washed over my body and I felt my heat slip out, the scent of it filling the alley.
Don paused, his eyes widening. He sniffed the air and I watched his expression change from anger to surprise to something much more dangerous.
"Wait. Is that... you're an omega?"
Marcus stepped closer, inhaling deeply. "She's an omega. I can smell it. She's in heat. Or she's about to be."
Fear gripped me, cold and sharp. "No. No, I'm not. I'm a beta. I haven't gotten my wolf yet. I'm a beta."
"Don't lie to us." Don grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him. "I can smell it on you. You're an omega. You've been hiding this from us."
"Wait, please. I'll pay you the money. I'll get it somehow. Just give me more time. I swear."
Don laughed, a cruel sound that echoed off the walls. "You have such a good way of making money in this society and yet you hide your nature? Do you know how much omegas are worth?"
Marcus nodded, his eyes roaming over my body. "We could sell you. Or we could keep you. An omega in heat is worth a lot to the right people."
"No, please. I'll do anything. Just don't do this. I'll pay you everything. I'll work for you. Just please."
Don smiled, a horrible grin that made my blood run cold. "No need, honey. We've got a better use for you. But first, we need to show the buyers what they're getting."
He dragged me into the corner of the alley, away from the street, and Marcus pulled out his phone. The flash went off in my face, once, twice, again, lighting up my flushed skin and trembling hands while Don yanked my chin up for a better angle.
"What... what are you doing?" I asked with horror, my voice shaking.
