We were married a year later in the South of France. It was my idea because I thought having an overseas wedding would keep things contained. David’s family in particular was so large, and he knew so many people.
But as it turned out, nearly all our friends and family still flew over.
The only person who couldn’t make it was Merle. She rang us two days before. "You’ll be very glad to know that I’ve finally managed to produce a plus-one," she announced. "But I’m afraid we won’t be able to make it."
David had her on speakerphone so I could hear their conversation. There was a noise in the background which sounded like the wail of a baby.
"Where are you calling from?" he asked her.
"Bath Royal United Hospital maternity ward," came the reply.
