Chapter 27 David pulled me straight back into bed when I returned from showering. “Shouldn’t we get up? Won’t people expect us downstairs?” I asked. “Let them wait,” he said, manoeuvring me on top of him. “But what if someone goes into your room looking for you? Shouldn’t you at least rumple the bedclothes?” I suggested. He laughed. “I think Mrs Lark has seen more shocking things than an unslept-in bed in her time. Besides, she doesn’t come on Saturdays.” Some considerable time later we were finally ready to go downstairs. I insisted on going down a minute before him for appearance’s sake. To walk into the room together would have felt indiscreet. As I stepped into the hall I heard Lydia’s voice from the drawing room. “…a teenager, for Christ’s sake!” “She’s a perfectly nice girl.
