Chapter 23
Two things happened on Christmas Eve. The first was that a courier van drove up our street, stopped at our house, and delivered a package to me. This was not a normal occurrence.
I opened it up and inside was a gift-wrapped box and a card. My parents were there at the time, and I could see my mother giving it a wary look. She guessed, as I did, whom it was from.
"I’ll put it under the tree," I said. I was going to open the card straight away, but not in front of my parents. I put the box under the Christmas tree, then went upstairs to my room, and drew the card out.
It was a typical Christmas scene of the Three Wise Men in the desert, on camels, with a star above them, embossed in gold. Inside, there was a handwritten message: "Happy Christmas darling, All my love, David xxx
