chapter one
The air was warm, filled with the golden glow of late afternoon sunlight stretching lazily across the open field. Laughter rang freely carried by the soft breeze that rustled through the tall grass. Caroline ran. Her small feet barely touched the ground as she darted between her friends, her giggles blending with theirs. The world felt endless in that moment. it was bright, safe, and full of simple joy. “Catch me if you can!” she shouted, glancing back with a wide grin. “Caroline, wait!” one of the girls cried, breathless with laughter. But Caroline only ran faster. Her curls bounced wildly as she pushed forward, weaving past a cluster of trees at the edge of the field. The shadows beneath them stretched long, offering a brief escape from the sun’s warmth. She didn’t think twice before slipping into them, her excitement pulling her deeper. “Caroline!” the voices called again, a little more distant now. “I’m over here!” she called back, though she didn’t slow down. She kept running and running and then she stopped. The laughter was gone. Caroline blinked, her chest rising and falling as she tried to catch her breath. Slowly, she turned in a small circle, her brows knitting together in confusion. The field was no longer the same. The sunlight seemed dimmer here, filtered through branches that hadn’t been there before. “Hello?” she called softly but got no answer. Her small fingers curled into the hem of her dress as unease began to creep into her chest. The silence pressed in on her. “Guys?” she tried again, louder this time but still no answer from her friends. Caroline swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. She took a hesitant step forward, then another, her eyes darting around as if expecting her friends to jump out and shout “surprise!” But no one did. Instead, the forest seemed to stretch further with every step she took and it sunlight became even more dimmer. “Stop it…” she whispered to herself, though her voice trembled slightly. “This isn’t funny.” She turned quickly, deciding to head back the way she came. Except… There was no path. Her breath hitched. Panic flickered faintly in her chest, not yet overwhelming but enough to make her heart beat faster. “Okay… okay…” she murmured, trying to steady herself the way her mother always told her to do. “Just find them. They’re probably hiding.” She moved forward again, more cautiously now. Each step felt louder than it should have, as her feets crunched against leaves that hadn’t been there moments ago. “Caroline…” She froze, her name. Someone had said her name. Slowly, she turned. “Hello?” she called, her voice smaller now. There was silence, but she knew she hadn’t imagined it. Her eyes scanned the space around her, searching for any movement, any sign of life. There was nothing, her heart began to pound harder and then she turned quickly, stepping forward and collided with someone. A soft gasp escaped her lips as she stumbled back, nearly losing her balance. Her eyes shot upward, wide with shock. There, standing directly in front of her, was a stranger. Caroline hadn’t heard them approach. Hadn’t seen them coming. One moment she had been alone… and the next they were just there. Her breath caught in her throat. For a second, fear gripped her tightly. Instinctively, she took a step back, her body already preparing to run. “I...I’m sorry!” she blurted, her voice shaking. “I didn’t see you...I..." She turned quickly, ready to bolt. “Caroline.” The voice was calm and gentle and it stopped her instantly. “Don’t be afraid.” Caroline hesitated. Something about the tone, soft and steady, almost familiar, made her pause. Slowly, she turned back around, her curiosity beginning to outweigh her fear. The stranger stood exactly where they had been, unmoving and watching her. Caroline blinked. Strange, she didn’t feel afraid anymore. In fact… she felt oddly calm. Her small brows furrowed slightly as she studied them. There was something unusual about the stranger, though she couldn’t quite explain what it was. It wasn’t their appearance exactly, it was something deeper, something she felt rather than saw. “Who… are you?” she asked quietly. The stranger tilted their head slightly, as though considering the question. “A friend,” they said after a moment. Caroline’s lips parted slightly. “A friend?” she repeated, unsure. “Yes.” Their voice remained soft. “I’ve been looking for you.” “For me?” Her confusion deepened. “But… I don’t know you.” The stranger smiled faintly. “No,” they agreed. “Not yet.” Caroline shifted her weight from one foot to the other, her curiosity growing stronger. There was something warm in the way they spoke. Something that made her feel… safe. “I was playing with my friends,” she said, glancing around again. “But they’re gone. Do you know where they are?” The stranger didn’t answer immediately. Instead, they took a slow step closer. Caroline didn’t move away. “I found you,” the stranger said softly, their gaze fixed on her. “That’s what matters.” Caroline frowned slightly, not fully understanding. But before she could ask another question, the stranger continued. “I have something for you.” Her eyes lit up instantly, curiosity overtaking everything else. “A gift?” she asked. The stranger nodded. “Yes. A very important one.” Caroline hesitated for only a second before stepping closer. “What is it?” The stranger reached into the folds of their clothing, their movements slow. For a moment, Caroline leaned forward slightly, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever they were holding. Then they brought it out. Caroline’s eyes widened. Resting in the stranger’s palm was a small delicate object, almost glowing faintly in the dim light. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. She took another step closer, drawn to it without fully understanding why. “It’s… pretty,” she whispered. The stranger’s gaze softened. “It’s yours.” Caroline blinked. “Mine?” “Yes.” The word felt important. She hesitated again, a small crease forming between her brows. “But… why?” she asked. “I didn’t do anything.” The stranger knelt slightly, bringing themselves closer to her level. “You don’t have to earn this,” they said gently. “It belongs to you.” Caroline stared at the object, her curiosity battling with uncertainty. “What does it do?” she asked. The stranger’s expression grew more serious. “It will protect you.” Caroline looked up at them, surprised. “Protect me?” The stranger nodded. “As long as you keep it with you,” they said slowly, “you will be safe. No harm will come to you.” Caroline’s small heart skipped. Safe. The word echoed in her mind, comforting in a way she didn’t fully understand. “Really?” she asked. “Really.” She looked down at the object again. It didn’t look dangerous. If anything, it felt… warm and inviting. Still, she hesitated. “You have to promise me something,” the stranger added. Caroline looked up quickly. “What?” “Keep it safe,” they said. “Always.” Their voice carried a quiet intensity now, something deeper beneath the softness. “No matter what happens,” they continued, “don’t lose it.” Caroline swallowed. “Okay…” she said slowly. “Promise me.” She nodded. “I promise.” The stranger held her gaze for a moment longer, as if searching for something in her eyes. Then, gently, they placed the object into her hands. The moment it touched her skin, Caroline gasped softly. A strange warmth spread through her fingers, traveling up her arm like a quiet pulse. It wasn’t painful. It felt… right. Like it had always been hers. Her eyes widened as she looked down at it again. “It feels funny,” she said. The stranger smiled faintly. “That means it knows you.” Caroline didn’t fully understand, but she nodded anyway. “Thank you,” she said softly. The stranger’s expression softened further. Before they could respond... “Caroline!” Her head snapped up. Her friends. She could hear them. “Caroline, where are you?!” Relief flooded through her instantly. “I’m here!” she shouted back, her voice bright again. She turned toward the sound, taking a step forward then paused. “Oh!” she said, quickly turning back to the stranger. “I have to go. They’re calling me.” She smiled shyly. “Thank you for the gift.” But there was no answer. Caroline blinked, the space in front of her was empty. The stranger was gone. Her smile faded slightly as she looked around, confusion flickering across her face. “Hello?” she called but got nothing only silence. For a moment, she stood there, unsure. “Caroline!” The voices were closer now. She looked down at the object still resting in her hands. It felt warm, steady, real. it was not a dream. Clutching it tightly, she turned and ran toward the sound of her friends, her earlier unease already fading beneath the comfort of familiar voices. As she broke through the trees the bright warm sunlight returned. “Caroline!” her friends rushed toward her, relief clear on their faces. “Where did you go? We couldn’t find you!” “I...I don’t know,” she said, slightly breathless. “I just… got lost.” They grabbed her hands, pulling her back toward the open field, their laughter slowly returning as if nothing had happened. But as Caroline glanced down at her closed fist, where the strange gift rested safely in her palm, a faint glow flickered between her fingers.
