Chapter One: New Beginnings
His paw pressed against my neck with the weight of a horse, more than capable of crushing my windpipe and leaving me for dead. With his drool slipping off his canine teeth and onto my brow, he let out a soft growl, and I couldn’t help but think this was it. He was going to devour me, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. But as quickly as he had pinned me, he vanished into the woods with an earth-shattering howl. I slowly pushed myself onto my elbows, trying to get my bearings while I processed what had just happened. A wolf, the size of a pickup truck, had just materialized, and pinned me to the ground. I had been shaken to my core with fear before this creature seemingly disappeared. This cannot be real, I thought. I have to be dreaming. As my vision returned, the world around me slowly came into focus. The forest loomed, dark and unforgiving, its towering trees casting long shadows that seemed to stretch toward me. A shiver ran down my spine, not just from the chill in the air, but from the unsettling feeling of being watched. The scent of fresh dew clung to the grass, mingling with the earthy aroma of the forest floor. Every rustle of leaves and snap of a twig heightened my senses, as if the woods themselves were alive and aware of my presence. With anxiety bubbling in my chest, I rose to my feet and started in the direction of my apartment, my pace quickening with each step. The path ahead was barely visible, shrouded in shadows and the thick canopy above. Every instinct urged me to move faster, to put as much distance as possible between myself and the mysterious creature. The forest seemed to close in around me, each sound amplified in the stillness, driving me forward with a sense of urgency. After the longest ten minutes of my life, I arrived at the door, struggling to place my key in the lock with trembling hands. My heart pounded in my chest, each beat echoing in my ears as I fumbled with the key. The sense of relief at reaching the safety of my apartment was overshadowed by the lingering fear of what I had just encountered. Finally, the key turned, and I stumbled inside, quickly shutting and locking the door behind me as if to keep the forest and its secrets at bay. With shaky legs, I barely made it to my bed, where I collapsed and allowed slumber to swallow me whole. Exhaustion washed over me, pulling me into a restless sleep filled with fragmented images of the wolf and the dark, watchful woods. Despite the comfort of my surroundings, the night's events lingered in my mind, blurring the line between reality and nightmare, until everything went dark.
