"One kiss, Miss Reed... and I'll walk back across the hall. Refuse me, and you'll find out just how comfortable my bedroom really is."

Rule number one of surviving Manhattan: Never get drunk at an elite masquerade.

Rule number two: Never let a lethal, brooding stranger drag you into a luxury penthouse suite for a night of breathless, ruined ecstasy.

Rule number three: Never, under any circumstances, realize the man who broke your innocence is your best friend’s older brother—and the ruthless billionaire CEO who signs your paychecks.

Vivian Reed was the golden academic prodigy of Columbia—quiet, untouchable, and bound to a strict Connecticut family betrothal to an arranged fiancé she has never met.

She thought her shameful one-night stand was behind her. Until Monday morning, when she steps onto the 50th floor of Sterling Capital and meets the ice-cold, predatory gaze of Julian Sterling.

Julian is Wall Street's most terrifying kingmaker: powerful, arrogant, and untouchable. But behind closed doors, he is a man obsessed. He stole the antique emerald pendant meant for her future wedding night. He blocked every rental lease in Manhattan to trap her into a $60 million luxury building—where he lives directly across the hall.

Now, he watches her every move. He crashes her dates. He steals her meals, pins her against kitchen counters, and demands a breathless toll for her freedom.

She is desperate to honor her arranged engagement and escape his suffocating control.

He is determined to tear up her contract, burn down her fiancé’s family, and make her surrender body and soul.

In this rain-slicked city of power and secrets... who will break first?

Chapter 1: In Her Brother’s Bed
The rain in Manhattan fell with a violence that rattled the floor-to-ceiling glass of the TriBeCa penthouse. In the cavernous, shadow-drenched master bedroom, the air was thick with the scent of stormy cedar, vintage bourbon, and the sweet, suffocating heat of two bodies tangled in the dark sheets. Vivian gasped, a ragged, broken sound that frayed into the darkness. Her hands—small, trembling, knuckles flushed pink—dug frantically into the broad, sinewy shoulders pinned above her. Her entire body felt molten. Useless. Completely hijacked by sensations she had never been taught to survive. The man over her was an apex predator carved from muscle and ruthless intent. Every thrust was slow, punishing, and calibrated to shatter whatever was left of her composure. "Please... don't..." Her plea came out as a soft, wet whimper, catching in the hollow of her throat like a trapped bird. A low, gravelly vibration rumbled against her jaw. Callused fingers, heavy with the weight of a platinum signet ring, clamped around her narrow waist, bruising her hip bones as he anchored her beneath him. He leaned down, his mouth brushing the fevered slope of her neck. His breath was intoxicatingly hot, laced with bitter citrus and dark malt. "Don't what, sweetheart?" His voice was a lazy, dangerous drawl. "Begging to stop now? It’s far too late for regrets." Vivian’s eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks, soaked with involuntary tears. "You can’t... do this to me..." He chuckled softly against her pulse point. "Be a good girl. Close your eyes. It’s only going to get better." Before she could form a coherent thought, he drove into her again, fierce and uncompromising, stripping the oxygen straight from her lungs. She shattered. Her fingers slipped from his sweat-slicked back, her vision blurring into a haze of gold-tinged darkness as she surrendered to the blinding crest. In the back of her unraveling mind, she had prayed it was merely a fever dream. A cruel, illicit hallucination brought on by one cocktail too many. It wasn't. It was all terrifyingly real. Dawn crept over the New York skyline, filtering a cold, milky light through the half-closed slatted blinds. Vivian woke with a dull, thrumming ache radiating through every muscle in her thighs. She tried to turn, but something immovable pinned her to the mattress. A heavy, sun-bronzed forearm was slung possessively across her ribs, locking her against a rock-hard chest that rose and fell in slow, rhythmic breaths. Her breath hitched. She turned her head a fraction of an inch. The face resting inches from her own nearly stopped her heart. He had the kind of aristocratic, lethal bone structure that belonged on a renaissance sculpture—or the cover of Forbes. High, sharp cheekbones. A straight, aristocratic nose. A jawline cut so sharply it could bleed you dry. Thick dark eyelashes cast crescent shadows over pale, flawless skin. In slumber, he looked almost angelic. Untouchable. A prince carved of ice. Yet the dark, primal bruises blossoming across her collarbone told an entirely different story. Last night, this man had been an absolute monster. Vivian’s throat closed up. She knew this face. Worse—she had seen it only yesterday on the financial news, and several times across the Sunday brunch table with her best friend. Julian Sterling. Manhattan’s most untouchable corporate heir, the feared CEO of Sterling Capital... and the older brother of her ride-or-die college roommate, Chloe. How in God’s name did she end up in Julian Sterling’s bed?! Memory fragments crashed back in agonizing waves. Last night was Chloe’s twenty-third birthday bash. Vivian, who rarely touched alcohol, had been coaxed into downing two sweet, deceptive gin fizzes. When the room began spinning, Chloe had insisted on taking her home, swearing she would stash her in the penthouse guest suite. Except Chloe had been three martinis deep herself. The chaotic blonde had dragged Vivian into the wrong wing of the penthouse, through double mahogany doors, and shoved her straight into her brother’s private sanctuary. And Julian, returning late from a cutthroat board dinner, had walked into his own bed in the dark—where a tipsy, feverish Vivian had already curled under his duvet, clinging to his warmth like a helpless ivy vine. Vivian squeezed her eyes shut, mortification burning down to her toes. If Chloe ever found out she had slept with her terrifying brother... The thought alone made her stomach plummet. Moving with microscopic precision, Vivian peeled his heavy arm off her torso, inch by agonizing inch. She slid to the edge of the mattress and planted her bare feet on the hardwood. A sharp jolt of soreness shot up her inner thighs. God. Her knees buckled, and she barely caught the edge of the nightstand to keep from collapsing onto the Persian rug. The man had dismantled her for hours without mercy. She gritted her teeth, glancing toward the floor. A disaster zone. His tailored Tom Ford dress shirt lay crumpled near the doorway. Beside it, tangled in a scandalous heap, were her modest lace bralette and a pair of Julian's dark grey Calvin Klein boxer briefs. A fiery blush rushed up her neck. Snatching her clothes off the floor with trembling fingers, Vivian threw them on at lightning speed, not daring to check her reflection in the mirror. She looked back at the bed once. Julian hadn't stirred. The charcoal sheet pooled low on his hips, revealing the lethal V-line of his pelvic bones and the broad expanses of his bare back. Holding her breath, she grabbed her coat, slipped out the heavy mahogany door, and fled into the misty Manhattan morning. Julian woke two hours later to the high-noon glare slicing across his pillow. Instinctively, his arm swept across the mattress, searching for the soft, warm curve of a waist that had fitted against his palm so perfectly in the dark. Empty. Cold silk met his fingertips. Julian’s storm-grey eyes snapped open. The bed was a wreck. Pillows tossed, sheets rumpled and smelling faintly of sweet jasmine and ruined innocence. The clothes were gone from the rug. The intoxicating little rabbit who had wrapped her silky legs around his hips all night—draining him until he was breathless—had vanished into thin air. A slow, dangerous scowl formed on his lips. She climbed into his bed, rode him to heaven, and sneaked out like a thief at dawn? Before he could process the sheer audacity of it, violent pounding shook his bedroom door. Bang! Bang! Bang! "Julian! Big brother! Are you awake, or did you slip into a coma?!" Chloe’s voice. Loud, grating, and utterly devoid of volume control. Julian pinched the bridge of his nose, his voice thick with morning rasp. "What do you want, Chloe?" "Have you seen Vivi?!" Chloe yelled through the wood. "I brought her home last night because she had two sips of gin and lost her mind. I put her in the guest room next to yours, but her bed is perfectly made! Not a single wrinkle! Did she get abducted by aliens?!" Julian’s dark eyebrows drew together. Vivi? A vision flashed through his mind—a soft, whimpering mouth under his, honey-brown curls spilling across his chest, and wide, terrified amber eyes staring up at him through tears. Vivian Reed. Chloe's quiet, bookish best friend with the Ivy League degree and the oversized cardigans. The innocent little academic who worked in his company’s risk assessment department. Julian threw on a pair of black sweatpants and opened the door. Chloe stood in the corridor wearing silk pajamas, clutching a mug of matcha latte and staring at him suspiciously. "You look like s**t, Jules," Chloe remarked, squinting at him. "Did you stay up doing spreadsheets again?" Julian leaned against the doorframe, his gaze cold and impenetrable. "What was her name again?" "Who? Vivian! You've met her twice at my brunch, remember? The quiet girl who writes algorithms for your company." Chloe wrinkled her nose, suddenly sniffing the air. "Wait... why does your room smell like perfume and bad decisions?" Julian stepped forward, blocking her view of the ruined bed. "Go home, Chloe. Stop drinking." "I am home!" Chloe scoffed, but as she looked up at him, her jaw dropped. Her eyes glued themselves to the side of his neck, where three angry, unmistakable claw marks ran from his collarbone to the base of his throat. "Holy s**t," Chloe gasped, pointing an accusing finger at his neck. "What the hell is that?!" Julian reached up, his thumb tracing the stinging scratches left by Vivian’s delicate fingernails in the heat of her c****x. The corner of his mouth curved into a slow, wicked smirk. "A wild cat," he murmured, his voice laced with dark, simmering amusement. "Ran straight into my claws... and scratched me on her way out."
