Chapter 14 Doug stared at the bedrock under his feet, refusing to watch Quinn walk away, even though he’d told her to go. He didn’t move or breathe until he heard a distant thud that had to be the kitchen door closing. Then he slowly folded forward, catching his hands against his knees to keep from ending up on the cold stone floor. What the hell just happened? Whether he wanted it or not, shaking started up in his middle and spread into his arms and legs. Distress caused part of it. The cause didn’t make much difference when it came to her, especially after so many years apart. Part of Doug was gutted to know she was walking, then driving out of his life again. Quite likely for the last time. But more than enough of his trembling came from anger. Was it possible she’d set this up?
