Introduction
The story I want to tell you starts exactly where all the fairy tales end. So, as you might assume, I’m a queen now, and have been for almost three years. Before that I was a totally ordinary girl, who lived a happy life together with her family, dreaming about the prince, who would come to marry her. Had I known before what would happen to me, I would have never wished for that. But as you all might have experienced already; you can’t change the past. You have to live the life you’re given. Well at that time, the prince travelled across the country to find the most beautiful girls and invited them to three massive Balls. I was so excited when I got an invitation and my mom, my sister and I went to the festivities. On the third night I met the prince in person. It was love at first sight, or so I thought at that time. He was very handsome, arrogant and cold, but I thought my love for him would break the shell and show me his true self. Little did I know that you can’t change people, especially no one who doesn’t want to be saved.
Chapter 1
Queen Louises POV
Slowly I stride down the great hall. Keeping an upright back and a simple smile fixed on my face. My husband, the king, is sitting on his throne already, waiting for me to do the same on a similar throne next to him. The people in the room bow as I walk past them, but I don’t look at it. My eyes are fixed on my Husband. He is such a handsome man, with at sharp jawline, light brown hair and a dimple right next to his gorgeous lips. He doesn’t smile at me, he just gives me a once over with his eyes and tips his head in acknowledgment. I would love to frown, but I keep my composure and reach out my hand to put it in his. I sit down next to him. For the next several hours people come into the room and wait in a long line to speak to the king about their misfortunes, their problems and their despair. They will be begging on their knees for help or money until their crying bodies would be thrown out of the palace. I don’t understand why my Husband even wastes time on those poor people, because he never grants them anything. I am of course not allowed to say anything, so I hide my real feelings behind a fake smile. In those three years I have lived in the palace, I learned to never show my true feelings and to hide them behind equanimity. Not only that, I even learned how to fake any kind of emotion and to understand others' emotions by reading their face. Since I married the king, my life has become as boring as it can be sitting around all day long, listing to poor people's problems, without being able to do anything about it. I am not allowed to say my opinion, be a part of important decisions or do anything fun. I never showed anyone how much I hate being where I am or how much I hate having nothing to do or to say. All I ever do is smile politely.
At dinner I sit furthest away from my husband. He sits on one end of the table and I on the other side. This doesn’t matter, because he never talks to me anyway. I eat my food while smiling politely, never looking up at him.
“My dear Louise,” he says in a soft voice. I am so stunned that he actually addressed me, that I look up and forget to guard my face. For a millisecond my real astonishment can be seen, but quickly I gather my composure again and smile at him.
“What is it?”, I ask, because he makes no move to continue.
“I just wanted to inform you, that I will be on a journey to our neighbor country, to work out some differences and help with some stuff.”
I just nod at him and return to my food.
“The minister will take over my responsibilities for that period of time, so you don’t have to worry about anything.”
Anger flashes through me, but I don’t let it show. How can it be that I'm not even in charge when he’s gone! I’m just a beautiful decoration for him, who will sit in stillness and wait for life to pass by.
