chapter 1
The sound of the ambulance whistled past my ears.
I was lifted onto the stretcher drowsily, my brain aching from the collision.
The voices of the crowd complaining were sharp and shrill:
"What makes him think he can just disregard other people's lives just because he's got money?"
"Does she really need to use the ambulance?! There are so many patients in critical condition, and that girl's injury is hardly serious!"
"Shhh, that's not an ordinary person, that's William, the richest man in the capital, that girl must be Mrs.Bennet, it's just like the rumours, William and Mrs.Bennet have a good relationship!”
"Yeah, you guys didn't see that look in his eyes, nervous and loving! Who wouldn't be envious!”
”.........”
The immense pain and suffocation made me gasp for air, the fishy sweetness between my throat couldn't be suppressed, and it came tumbling out in an instant.
"Miss, are you alright?" The doctor and nurse rushed to my side, performing first aid. "Hold on! We'll be at the hospital soon!"
I was forced to focus my thoughts, trying to open my eyes.
William's voice from close by came, "Doctor, she's not feeling well! Just go and give her a complete check-up!"
"But Mr.Bennet ......"
Before the doctor could finish his words, he was grabbed by William, "If anything happens to her, if there's even the slightest accident, are you ready to bear the consequences?"
The densely packed people around me dispersed, I managed to suck in a mouthful of air, and a nurse held my hand.
"Miss, hold on, don't be nervous."
"I'll call your family for you, tell them to wait at the hospital."
Not far away, a mobile phone rang unexpectedly.
I struggled to open my eyes.
William was standing there, bent over with the girl's hand cradled to his lips. Even with his back to me, I could just imagine the expression on his face.
Nervousness, heartache, dismay.
The phone rang several times in a row and went quiet.
"Oops! Why did it hang up...?" The nurse pressed the keypad anxiously, "He turned off his phone?! Ugh, it's so annoying when a guy goes missing just when you need him!"
Can't find him at a critical moment?
Actually, he was right here.
Only a little distance, as if separated by a city, he can't see me.
He was too busy rushing his new girlfriend to the ambulance, busy grabbing my EMT for her.
He's not absent, he just wants to disappear.
After seven years of marriage, when he was most needed in life and death, he was accompanying someone else.
Emily, this moment, have you finally lost your faith in this moment??
