A different Sky
The plane window depicted a sky that was too blue to be natural as it has been increased to an unnatural level. Mina leant her forehead against the window, and watched the clouds passing beneath her as gentle waves in the distance, showing a glowing city covering the horizon. South Korea. A new life that she always desired. New life that she didn't know if she was ready for. Flashes of lights shone like stars thrown on earth. Her heart beat was a mixture of fear and excitement, this was where she was to stay in the next four years. As the plane landed, she got out and walked with her suit case eying around the new surrounding. All this occurred so quickly... announcements, clicking seatbelts, to the movement of people wanting to get to their different destinations. Mina got out of the Airport and felt the weight of her previous life shed off and the weight of a new one upon her shoulders. The people went fast-paced and seemed to know what they were doing. She kept checking the acceptance email on her phone as if it might disappear at any second. In the meantime, she continued to check her phone to remind herself of which direction to exit the airport. Welcome to South Korea said she to herself. It was noisier, busier and more fast - paced than her home city. The taxi ride was cool. Different structures went by like the scenes in a music video, bright lights, and signs that she could not comprehend. She stopped at the entrance-gate of the college, and the evening breeze whistled over her face. The university was bigger than she anticipated, and its high and bright buildings were outlined. A crowd of students walked by her laughing. She smiled at them, and wondered how soon she would fit in to do so. Her residential block resembled the pictures...it was very high, contemporary, and to some extent, intimidating. She knocked on room 407 door on entering the dorm, It flung open. A curly haired girl with a bright smile gasped and said, "You must be Mina, I am Sofia, your room mate". And gave her a hug. Mina smiled though she was tired. “Hi, yes, I’m Mina.” Within minutes, the room was filled with the pandemonium of clothes within arrival open suitcases, strewn clothes, Mina and Sofia trailing around her folded clothes and disheveled heaps of sweaters. Sofia would never stop chattering as she aided in the luggage of Mina with her inside. So Sofia started, as she sat on her bed with her legs crossed as Mina unpacked, "why Korea?" She asked, Exchange program? Trying to get over an ex? Bored of your country? Tell me everything.” Oh...so many assumptions. "Mina sighed" I prefer to be thorough, "Sofia said" Mina sat on her bed, whilst holding a pillow to her chest, she said tenderly. “I just... wanted a fresh start". I felt stuck at home. I desired to experience more of the world. And Korea appeared to be the right place. Sofia smiled slowly, with warm eyes... “I totally get that. I am a Spanish person and everybody wanted me close to home, but I desired otherwise, something bigger. So I reasoned, why not go to a country where I had no idea about anything? She laughed. Mina smiled, You know you are scared, too, and are posing like that? Oh, I am very, very frightened indeed, said Sofia proudly. “But that’s the fun part.” "So what's your major" Mina asked Fashion designing and marketing "She replied " Really... girl same here, I guess this is fate "Mina said" And they both laughed. And it was the first time that Mina could relax since her arrival. Something was soothing about Sofia, so noisy, disorderly, yet so real and true to herself. They spent hours unpacking and telling stories and theories about cultures. Sofia told her about her strict abuela, her addiction to K-dramas and how she was going to explore all the street food that Korea could offer. Mina also told hers about how she would miss her mom's cooking, her fear of being lost and the small dream she carried with her to re-invent herself, though she did not know how to proceed with it. Mina was lightened when they had arranged the room. Less solitary and a little bolder. She looked around the small dorm room, which now reeked mildly of the vanilla lotion used by Sofia and her own coconut hair cream. "This is it", New country, New school, New you. She whispered to herself. Everything would begin tomorrow.
