Prologue
“No mommy, please, I promise to be good. I am sorry mommy. I will stay away from the dog, I promise mommy.” I was clinging to my mother’s leg as she walked up the steps to the local adoption agency.
Calmly my mother replied, “Vivianne I told you many times to stay away from that dog or you’ll get hurt. Then your daddy’s dog that makes us money will be taken away. We need that dog to fight so your daddy can pay off his debts. That means you must go not the dog, sorry.”
I cried silently the whole time. The nice young lady at the front desk was confused by the reason my mother gave her for wanting to put her five-year-old daughter up for adoption. But not wanting to get into trouble at her new job she kept silent and handed my mother the form.
“Would you like a lollipop dear? We have ones with bubble gum in the middle.” Holding out a grape lollipop to me she smiled sweetly. I looked up at my mother, she shot me daggers and gave a curt shake of her head.
“No thank you ma’am,” I replied. Not really wanting to endure my mother’s wrath. I was still in pain from the dog bite on my left forearm. My mother did a quick job of ointment, gauze, and some tape. No hospitals, no doctors. Could not let anyone know that I got bit by the family dog to the point I probably needed stiches. The nice lady at the counter continued to smile at me while my mother rambled on about the things these people did not need to know. I watched as my mother set down the pen pushed the paper to the woman and turned to leave. She stopped with her hand on the door handle, she couldn’t even turn around to talk to me.
“I didn’t want this Vivianne, but I love that man so much. I know he loves me too even though I’m broken. I think he is the last one now and I cannot have him looking at you one day in the future, like he does with me now. This is for the best. Goodbye.” And with this my mother walked away from me, leaving me at this place for a man who beat her to death a few years later over money.
I was never adopted like that young lady at the front desk told me I would be. I was put into foster care and lived a nightmare until I turned eighteen. That is when I was deemed an adult by the State and was released out on my own. The first thing I did was take all the money I have saved over the years from lunches, birthdays, and doing the other kids homework, and I got myself a one-way ticket to Russia. Why Russia? I don’t really know all I know is I have always been drawn to the country of cold weather and vodka. I packed what little I had and never looked back.
