Chapter 1:THE OFFER
Zara Daniels adjusted her faded blazer, trying to hide the tiny tear near her shoulder. The café’s air-conditioning was too cold for comfort, but her palms were hot and damp. She checked her phone for the fifth time — 6:02 p.m. He was late. Typical Leonardo Grey — Nigeria’s youngest billionaire and the coldest man she had ever met. The same man who once called her “incompetent” after a single mistake during an event she planned for his company. She still remembered the humiliation of being fired on the spot. Now, three years later, here she was — waiting for him. The door opened, and silence rippled through the café. Heads turned as Leonardo walked in, tall, crisp in a black suit, and oozing the kind of confidence that made people move out of his way without a word. His presence carried power — and arrogance. Zara swallowed hard as he approached . “Miss Daniels,” he said, his deep voice steady, unreadable. “You’re punctual. Good.” She forced a smile. “I had nothing else to do.” He sat across from her, setting a sleek black folder on the table. No greeting. No warmth. Just that intense gaze that seemed to dissect her thoughts. “I won’t waste your time,” he began. “I have a business proposal.” Her brows drew together. “A business proposal?” Leonardo slid the folder toward her. “A marriage contract.” Zara blinked. “I’m sorry—what?” “I’m offering you ₦20 million to marry me for six months.” For a moment, she thought she misheard him. She looked around, half-expecting someone to jump out and say it was a joke. But Leonardo’s face remained stone-cold serious. “Why me?” she asked, trying to steady her voice. He leaned back, folding his arms. “Because you’re discreet, desperate, and you don’t care about fame. I need a wife immediately to satisfy my late father’s company condition before I can inherit Grey Holdings. It’s a formality, nothing emotional.” Her lips parted in disbelief. “You’re insane.” “Maybe,” he said dryly. “But you’re still sitting here.” Zara’s heart pounded. Her younger sister, Lila, had been in the hospital for two months. The bills kept piling up. Every day the doctor’s tone grew more urgent — more hopeless. She had maxed out her savings, sold her car, and borrowed from every friend she had. ₦20 million. That could pay for everything. Still, the thought of being Leonardo’s wife — even a fake one — felt like signing her soul away. She stared at him. “What exactly do you expect from me?” “Attend social events with me, act like my wife, and keep up appearances,” he replied smoothly. “No intimacy, no obligations, no emotional nonsense. Just professionalism.” Zara gave a humorless laugh. “So basically, you want a human shield.” “If that helps you sleep at night,” he said, not even flinching. Her phone buzzed on the table. A message from the hospital flashed on the screen: ‘Lila’s condition worsening. Please settle payment for her treatment.’ Her vision blurred for a second. She looked up at Leonardo, who was now watching her quietly — like he already knew she would say yes. “Will you pay for my sister’s surgery upfront?” she asked. “Yes. Once you sign the contract.” He opened the folder and handed her a pen. The papers were thick, filled with clauses, but her hands trembled too much to read. Zara’s mind screamed at her to walk away. But then she saw her sister’s frail smile in her memory — and she knew she couldn’t. She picked up the pen. “Six months,” she whispered. Leonardo nodded. “Six months.” “And after that?” “You walk away with your money, and I walk away with my company.” Zara stared at the signature line. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. “You’re really heartless.” Leonardo’s lips curved in a ghost of a smile. “That’s why this will work.” Her pen touched the paper. She signed her name with shaking hands, sealing her fate. Leonardo took the folder back, closing it neatly. “My lawyer will contact you tomorrow. The wedding will be this weekend.” “This weekend?” she repeated, eyes wide. “Why delay?” he said calmly, standing to leave. Zara sat frozen as he walked away, leaving behind the faint scent of expensive cologne — and a life she never imagined. When the café door closed behind him, she finally let out the breath she’d been holding. Her heart thudded painfully against her chest. She had just agreed to marry the man who once ruined her career. And this time, he might ruin her heart.
