The Portrait Hall

He led her into a long corridor lined with portraits. The air grew colder. The torches dimmed. Kali felt the pulse again — stronger now, echoing through her bones. Silas stopped before a massive portrait. A woman with silver hair. Eyes like molten gold. A warrior's stance. A presence that radiated power. Kali stared. "She looks... fierce." Silas's voice was barely audible. "She was." "Who is she?" Silas hesitated. Then: "My sister." Kali's breath caught. "The one you failed?" Silas's eyes closed for a moment — a flicker of pain crossing his face. "Yes." Kali stepped closer to the portrait. "What happened to her?" Silas didn't answer. But the torches flickered violently. The air thickened. The pulse in Kali's chest throbbed like a warning. Kali swallowed. "Silas... what's behind that locked door?" Silas's eyes snapped open. He looked at her with a mixture of fear and something else — something fragile and dangerous. "You must stay away from that door." "Why?" Silas stepped closer, his voice low. "Because she is behind it." Kali froze. His sister. The cursed one. The dangerous one. The one who reacted to her. Kali's voice trembled. "She's alive?" Silas's expression was shattered — grief, guilt, longing, fear. "Not alive. Not dead. Cursed." Kali felt the pulse again — sharp, electric, calling. Silas saw her flinch. His voice dropped to a whisper. "She feels you." Kali's breath hitched. "Why?" Silas looked at her like she was a star falling straight toward him. "Because your soul is tied to mine." Kali's heart stopped. Silas stepped back, as if distance could protect her. "And she shares my soul." Kali's pulse thundered. The keep hummed. The portrait's eyes seemed to glow. Silas whispered, "She knows you're here." And somewhere deep in the keep... behind iron and magic... a faint, distant pulse answered.
