The Keep That Watches

387 Words
The carriage rattled through the forest like a coffin on wheels. Kali pressed her palms against the cold window, watching the trees blur past in streaks of black and silver. The moonlight filtered through the branches, casting jagged shadows across her skin. She felt the pulse again — faint, rhythmic, like a second heartbeat echoing beneath her own. She didn't know what it meant. She didn't want to know. But it was there. Persistent. Alive. The vampire guards sat across from her, silent and unmoving. Their eyes glowed faintly in the dark, watching her without blinking. Kali refused to look away. She wouldn't give them the satisfaction. "Does he always kidnap girls?" she muttered. One guard shifted. "Lord Silas does not kidnap." Kali snorted. "Funny, because I'm definitely kidnapped." The guard's jaw tightened. "You were chosen." Kali rolled her eyes. "Oh, well, that makes it better." The carriage lurched to a stop. The forest parted, revealing a massive stone fortress rising from the earth like a beast waking from slumber. Towers clawed at the sky. The windows glowed faintly with cold fire. The air around the keep felt heavy, charged, humming with ancient magic. Kali's breath caught. The pulse in her chest quickened. The keep... felt alive. The guards opened the carriage door. "Welcome to Blackthorn Keep." Kali stepped out, her boots sinking into the damp earth. The wind whipped her hair around her face, carrying the scent of rain and old stone. She stared up at the towering fortress, her heart pounding. It was beautiful. And terrifying. A shadow moved near the entrance. Silas. He stood beneath the archway, framed by torchlight, his silver hair catching the glow like frost. His eyes locked onto hers instantly — sharp, cold, unreadable. But something flickered there. Something she didn't understand. "Kali," he said, her name a low rumble in the night. She crossed her arms. "You could've just asked me to visit." Silas's lips twitched — not a smile, but something close. "You would have refused." "You're right," she said. "I would've." Silas stepped closer, his presence pressing against her skin like a cold wind. "The keep reacted to you. I had no choice." Kali swallowed. "What does that mean?" Silas didn't answer. Instead, he turned and walked into the keep. "Follow me." Kali hesitated, then stepped inside.
