SIA’S POV
It’s been 3 months since I’ve started my third year study in Chicago. I’ve gone to meet mom in the last few month quiet a few times. My father had tried to call me few times, even gave me few voice mail about how much he loves me and that he realized his mistake. I hoped with all my heart that he is genuine in his words. What scared me is that the man my father wanted me to marry also called a few times. At first I didn’t know his contact number so I took the call. As soon as took though, I knew my mistake.
I was heading to my class when my phone rang loudly, startling me. I taped the green icon taking the phone to my ears.
“Hello”
“it’s good to hear your voice”
“Who is this?”
“You can’t tell your future husband? I’m disappointed, darling.”
A horrible shiver went up my spine stopping me in my steps…. I knew who it was.
“What do want? Why are you calling me? I’m not getting married to you. I’m sure you know that by now.”
“And I am sure that you know that I get what I want. And I want you. I will get you, by hook or by crook.”
“You are not getting anywhere near me, Maddox. I’m not your property. I’ll never be. So you should stop calling me. ”
“Play hard to get as long as you want, I will own you soon. You will beg me to take you. That’s a promise.”
He hung up on me after that.
It had been almost a week since the last call. Each time I block his number, he calls from a new one. At this point I’m scared to even pick up a call. I really hope he would stop. Maddox Lord is a dangerous man. This makes me curse my dad even more. What was he thinking trying to sell me to a man like that. An underboss for a mafia is a bad idea. He should have known better. I should have known better than to trust my father so blindly and I should have come to mom as soon as I turned 18 almost three years ago.
“SIA, ARE YOU EVEN LISTINING?” I jolted from my troubled thoughts at the high pitch sound of Lisa’s voice.
“I’m sorry what were you saying?”
We were going to our room after our classes ended. Mine ended hours ago, I just stayed in the library. She sighed as she realized I didn’t hear a thing she said.
“You have been like this for a while now, always wondering in your head. Are you okay? Did something happened?”
This is why I had come to love my roommate. She cared about me a lot. She was like a mother hen sometimes. Not to bother her with my misery I tried to change the subject.
“I am perfectly fine. Just thinking about things…. What were you saying again?” I was feeling like someone is watching me as we walked. So wasn’t really paying a lot of attention at this point. Looking everywhere trying to find if someone is out there. There is no one.
“I have been saying how we should do something in the next few days, you know like a party or something. Since Christmas is in a few weeks, and your birthday is also coming in a week, we could go clubbing or something. You can legally drink now!”
That got my attention. Oh man! I haven’t gone parting for a long time. It would be good for a change, to keep my mind from going to somewhere dark, have fun and just forget about all this drama that is my life for a few hours. So I immediately agreed.
“Yes, let’s go next weekend…. Wait how did know it was my birthday next week?”
She gave me a look like I was being dumb. “You said it yourself when we were buying Christmas stuff. You were telling me about your childhood presents on both birthday and Christmas being separate even though they are so close.”
“Oh yeah. Now come on let’s go. I need to go study on my next project.”
As we were closing in near the dormitories, I still felt like I’m being watched. As I look back, I see a black expedition car getting out of the parking gates and nothing else in sight.
Maybe I’m just being paranoid. But what if I'm not?
