Chapter 1 — The Wrong Bed
Sophia woke up to a strange ceiling and a pounding head. For a second she didn't move. She listened. The air was too quiet, too clean, and it smelled like hotel soap. Then she felt warmth beside her. Sophia turned her head. A man lay next to her, bare-chested, asleep under a white sheet. Her stomach dropped. “No… no, no." She yanked the blanket up to her collarbone and looked down. She was undressed. Her hands started shaking so hard she could barely breathe. In that instant, Johnson flashed through her mind—her fiancé, the man she loved, the man who was supposed to put a ring on her finger any day now. Her friends had been teasing her for weeks, demanding to see the ring and asking when he would propose, and Sophia had always smiled because she could already picture it. Now she was in a hotel bed with a stranger. She squeezed her eyes shut and whispered, “Please… I need to remember." Her memory came back in broken flashes. A suite in this same hotel, filled with gold balloons and loud music, with her girlfriends shouting, laughing, and hugging her. “Engagement celebration!" Emily had screamed, pushing a glass at her. Sophia had tried to refuse. “I have work tomorrow." Jessica had looped an arm around her shoulders. “One night. Just one night. You deserve it." “Just one drink," Sophia had said. Someone had poured more. Someone had clinked glasses. The room had spun. People had cheered. Then everything went black. Sophia's throat tightened. She stared at the man again. His face was turned slightly away. She didn't recognize him. She didn't even know his name. She slid out of bed as quietly as possible, wincing as the floor chilled her feet. She found her underwear first, then her bra, then her dress in a tangled pile near the chair. A man's jacket lay beside it. “Don't wake up," she whispered, more like a prayer than a command. Her zipper caught. She worked it up with trembling fingers. The man shifted. Sophia froze, breath locked in her chest. He murmured something in his sleep, rolled his head, and went still again. She grabbed her purse and phone, then her heels. She didn't dare look back for long. She just moved—fast, silent—until she reached the door. The hallway was empty. Sophia slipped out, pulled the door closed, and leaned against it for one dizzy second. Her phone screen lit up. 7:12 AM. “God," she breathed. “I'm late." She was late for work, and it felt like she was late for her whole life. She walked quickly down the hall, heels in her hand until she reached the elevator. Her reflection in the mirrored wall looked like someone else—pale, messy hair, lipstick smeared. She swallowed and dialed Jessica. Jessica answered with a groan. “Hello…?" “Jessica," Sophia said. Her voice sounded too thin. “Where are you?" “My bed," Jessica mumbled. “Why are you calling at—Sophia, my head is killing me." “Do you remember last night?" Sophia asked. “After the party started." Jessica paused. “Uh… I remember the suite. You were on the couch, and you kept saying you didn't want to get drunk." “And then?" Sophia pressed. “Jessica, what happened after that? Why did you all leave me here? I woke up in this hotel and I don't even remember getting to a room." Jessica's voice sharpened. “Left you? Sophia, I thought you were with us." “I wasn't," Sophia said. “Did you see me leave the suite? Did anyone walk me back?" Jessica exhaled. “Emily yelled, 'Shots!' Everyone was chanting. You took one, then another. After that… my memory is fuzzy too. I remember you near the hallway talking to someone—some guy in a dark jacket. Emily said you were fine and that she'd get you to your room. I believed her." Sophia's throat tightened. “So you lost track of me." “I'm sorry," Jessica said quickly. “I should've checked." “Where is Emily now?" Sophia asked. “Probably still asleep," Jessica said. “I'm in my room. I'll call her right now and find out what she remembers." “Do that," Sophia said. “Please. Ask if anyone saw me leave, or which room I was supposed to be in." “I will," Jessica promised. “Go home, okay? Shower, drink water, eat something. Then call me. We'll figure out what happened." Sophia stared at the street, watching office workers pass by as if their lives weren't falling apart. “I have to go to work," she said. “You're going to work like this?" “I have no choice," Sophia said. “We keep our relationship private there. No one can know. I can't show up late and crying." “Okay," Jessica said reluctantly. “But call me. Promise." “I promise," Sophia whispered. Sophia ended the call and forced her feet to move. At home, she washed her face until her skin burned, changed into a clean blouse and skirt, and pinned her hair back like it was just another Monday. In the mirror, she practiced a steady look. She rolled her shoulders back and forced her breathing to slow. It was an accident, she told herself. A stranger, a blackout, a mistake that didn't have to become a disaster. He didn't know her name. He didn't know where she worked. If she stayed calm and acted like nothing happened, she could lock it away and move on—because panicking wouldn't change anything. Her knuckles whitened on the counter until the shaking eased. “I'm fine," she told her reflection. “You're fine." By the time she reached the office, her heartbeat had settled into a dull ache. Johnson's company was already busy. People nodded at her. Some said good morning. Sophia replied automatically, her smile tight. She took the elevator up to the executive floor and walked toward the CEO's office. Her hands were still cold. Johnson had told her many times, “At work, we're just coworkers." Sophia had agreed. She had thought it was romantic—like they had a secret only the two of them shared. Now the secrecy felt like a trap. As she neared the office door, she heard voices inside. Johnson's voice. Close. Low. Sophia slowed. Then she heard a woman's voice, too soft, too intimate. Sophia's chest tightened. She reached for the handle—and stopped. The door wasn't fully closed. There was a narrow gap. Sophia leaned in without thinking. Inside, Johnson was behind his desk. And Alice—Sophia's half-sister—was sitting on the desk, her legs angled toward him like she belonged there. Sophia's breath caught. Alice's arms were wrapped around Johnson's neck. Her face was inches from his. She was smiling, and her eyes looked bright, pleased, confident. Johnson's hands rested on Alice's waist. She caught a few words through the gap. “Stop," Johnson said, but there was no real anger in it. Alice laughed softly. “Why? You're the one who pulled me closer." “This is my office," he murmured. “And I'm your… what?" Alice's voice turned sweet, teasing. “Tell me." Johnson didn't answer. He only held her tighter. Sophia couldn't hear the words clearly, only the warmth in their voices, the closeness, the way the scene fit together like it had happened before. Her fingers went numb against the doorframe. For a heartbeat, Sophia didn't move at all. Her mind screamed one question over and over: What am I looking at? And then the next one hit even harder: How long has this been happening? Sophia stood frozen in the c***k of the doorway, watching her sister cling to the man who had promised to marry her.
