Awakening Fate

The forest is dark, and a cool breeze fills the air. On the forest floor dew begins to form in tiny droplets on each blade of grass. I take a deep breath filling my lungs with fresh air. I lay on the cool ground as I look up towards the night sky. Stars fill the night sky, covering my homeland like a blanket. I’m in awe as I take in the sight and think about how all of this is my home.               I am content being alone and enjoying the peace and quiet. I start to relax closing my eyes and taking in the sounds of the forest around me. Frogs and insects chirp while a light breeze rustles the leaves in the trees. Everything is as it should be. I feel myself starting to drift asleep, when suddenly I hear a female humming. I sit up quickly and glance around the opening. Behind me at the edge of the opening is a female moving beside the brush. She is one of the most beautiful females I have ever seen. She is tall and slender in build. Her hair is long and white flowing down her back. She is wearing a long flowy baby blue dress. She turns slowly towards me and is smiling. I feel like all the breath I had has been sucked out of me as I stare back at her. Pulling myself into a standing position I slowly start to move towards her. “Who are you?” I call out to her but get no response. “Do you need help?” The woman shakes her head at me. She is still smiling making me feel comforted. I feel like I know her but can’t place where I would have met her. As I get closer, I notice tears staining her cheeks as she looks at me adoringly. “Please let me help you!” I yell to her and start to pick up my pace. I’m worried that she is hurt. Again, she just shakes her head and slightly moves back away from me. Every step I take she takes one away from me. “Wait! Stop!” “You are everything and more.” She whispers as tears continue to fall from her eyes. I run faster trying to reach her. My heart races as my feet pound into the floor. I’m so close to her that I can feel her body heat, but the moment I reach out to her she disappears. My hands grasp nothing but air. “What?” My mind feels like it’s spinning. She was just here. I look around quickly worried that this may be some black magic, but spot nothing or no one out here with me. Panting, I sit down and try to catch my breath. I run my hand through my hair trying to understand what just happened. I know she was real. As I start to calm down, I notice that everything becomes darker. The night sky is no longer filled with stars. All the sounds within the forest have gone silent. I can only hear my heartbeat and my own breath. I decide that it’s time to leave, but as soon as I am on my feet a loud growl emits through the woods. Everything seems distorted and I cannot determine what direction the growl came from. I start to run without knowing which direction I am heading in. Another growl fills the air again and I can hear something running after me in the darkness. I look behind me to see a large gray and black wolf chasing after me. Its red eyes fixed on me as it continues to growl and run after me. I feel something hit my back causing me to fly forward with such force that I’m going to hit a tree. I close my eyes as it comes closer, but instead of hitting something hard I feel myself hit something soft. Slowly I open my eyes scared of what I am going to see. I’m greeted with a view of my bedroom. I let out a sigh of relief. It was just a dream. I throw back the covers to find myself covered in sweat, making me feel chilled. Entering my private bathroom, I am greeted by my reflection. My pale skin glistens from the sweat covering my body. My dark brown shoulder length hair is damp and sticks to my skin. Dark circles sit below my hazel eyes. I groan at my appearance and decide to take a shower. As I sit under the hot water my thoughts flicker back to my dream. Who was that wolf? Who was the woman? I have never seen either of them, but for some reason I was an interest of theirs. I release a sigh as I conclude that I will not get any answers about my dream today. Instead, I turn my attention towards getting through my last day of the school year. Grabbing a book, I sit on the window bench to look out over the courtyard. The sun is just starting to rise. Just one more day where I must be in proximity with my peers and then it will be summer break. My name is Emmeline Brookes, and I am a member of the Granite Pack.
