Kara had refused to get her wings checked but Brynhildr had insisted, and she did so. The doctor said it was nothing bad and it would heal sooner than she expected. Of course it would heal, she would make sure of it. Ever since Kara got her wings, it became the most precious thing to her. Well besides her uncle and cousin. When Kara was in the ward, news came to her that the Queen requested her presence immediately. Kara had frowned upon the summoning, because she knew all too well what this would be about, so she had removed herself from the doctor’s care, without waiting for her prescription.
Kara smoothly walked through the big, wide and golden palace corridors on her way to the throne room. Upon her entrance she locked eyes Prince Gunner the second child belonging to the throne. He passed a polite smile towards Kara and wiped it off as soon as his mother turned her face towards him. Kara presented herself in front of the Queen, King, Crown Prince and Prince Gunner.
‘Your Majesty, you have asked to see me’. Kara knelt down before the Queen with her head bowed down.
‘Kara, you were with Crown Prince Brynhildr when the fire ball was aimed at him?’ The Queen asked, waiting for Kara’s response. Kara keeps her head bowed refusing to get reprimanded for standing or lifting her head without permission.
‘Yes, I was your Majesty’. Kara said still head bowed.
‘You may rise, Crown Prince Brynhildr told me you protected him with your wings. Is that true?’ The Queen asked, her face looking disturbed at the site of Kara.
‘I did your Majesty’. Kara responded.
‘Thank you for always being the best’. The King finally spoke up. Kara felt like she was on trial for something she didn’t do.
‘Well, it is hereby your task to find who attempted to assassinate the Crown Prince of Valkyrie. They shall be put to trial and sentenced to death’. Kara looked up as the Queen said these words, she was not shocked by her words only irritated because every solution for the Queen was death.
‘Of course, your Majesty’. Kara said.
‘You may be excused Kara’. The Queen said, looking at Kara with the hate she tries to cover up but never succeeding. Kara excused herself from the throne room and dodged going back to get her prescription, it’s not like she actually needed it. Kara continued to walk she bumped into someone she’s been trying to avoid all this time.
‘Kara’. Pruor called, stopping in his tracks and bidding farewell to the people he was walking with.
‘Yes dad?’ Kara answered, she had only started called her uncle dad five years ago because it was very difficult for her.
‘You’ve been avoiding me Kara’. Pruor said looking at her intensely.
‘No, I haven’t dad I’ve just been busy that’s all’. Kara said, feeling her insides dropping.
‘Are you on duty today?’ Pruor asked Kara, all Kara could do was laugh.
‘Dad, when do I ever actually catch a break?’ Kara said looking at her dad’s sad face. ‘Don’t worry though I will be catching a break now because my wings got slightly burnt’. Pruor walked quickly towards his daughter and turned her around to check her wings.
‘Are you okay? What happened?’ Pruor asked extremely panicking at this point. Kara spun back around and held her dad’s hand. ‘I’m okay dad’. Kara said.
‘Okay, okay…… just tell me what happened, I’ll be more relieved. Pruor pressed Kara further.
‘I shielded the Crown Prince with my wings’. Pruor look at his daughter and sighed.
‘Kara please your wings are very important you need to look after them and yourself, I almost forgot happy birthday’. Kara looked at Pruor annoyed, that even after all these years he didn’t see how much she hated those words.
‘Yeah, thanks dad I need to go now, I’ll talk to you later’. Kara tried shrugging the feeling off but it wouldn’t leave, so instead of her getting more annoyed. Kara decided leave, Kara started walking away from Pruor and she could feel his gaze piercing her back. She decided to ignore it and continue to put a distance between them. Kara wished she could fly right now but she didn’t want to hinder the healing process.
‘Hey Kara wait up’. Kara turned around to see her friend Sigrun. If it was possible for her day to get worse, there was. The final straw was the appearance of her friend.
‘Hi….. you look bubbly’. Kara said exhausted at all these unnecessary encounters.
‘Well news says you were getting grilled by the Queen in the throne room, is that true?’ Sigrun asked getting even closer to Kara’s face.
‘You lot can’t seem to mind your own business, I see’. Kara said crossing her arms over her chest.
‘Well it’s your birth..’ Sigrun didn’t get to finish her sentence because Kara had already spun around.
‘Kara! Wait I’m sorry I didn’t mean to say that’. Sigrun said with so much desperation.
‘Yeah whatever, we will talk later. You’re in charge of the squad. I’m off today’. Kara continue down her path never turning back to spare her friend a second glance. Eventually after a long walk Kara arrived home. She went into her room, forgetting to lock her door as usual. Kara threw herself on her bed trying to relax every muscle in her body.
Kara decided to find herself again and sat up straight on the bed. She closed her eyes and when she reopened it her eyes were black as night, with the colour of her magic black. She never did understand why because her eye colour wasn’t black. She always thought her eye colour would match her magic just like her mother’s. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case for her. Kara lifted her hands in the air and called upon her magic, eyes still black she said, ‘coruscare’. A flame on the palm of her hand appeared. She smiled because she still had it.
‘Kara!’ Kara looked up only to see the shock on her cousin’s face. Kara closed her hand and shut the door with her magic. She was totally discovered and this was not good at all.
‘I told you to never come into my room without my f*****g permission Hildr!’ Kara screamed
‘I’m sorry, I saw your door slightly opened and I wanted to speak with you’. Kara’s eyes still remained black, her aura extremely dangerous at this point because of her anger. Kara levitated herself from the bed and zoomed towards Hildr’s scared and stiff body.
‘You need to listen when they tell you things. I never planned for anyone knowing this part of me. Why do you have to make life hard for everyone Hildr’. Kara was so tempted to punch the wall besides Hildr’s body, she couldn’t understand this feeling. She can usually control her anger. She thought maybe it was because of how long it’s been since she’d managed to practise magic properly.
‘Please…..Kara don’t hurt me’. Kara moved back slowly and shook her head and her eyes returned to normal. She moved quickly towards Hildr and hugged her.
‘I’m so sorry, I don’t know what came over me. Are you okay?’ Kara tried holding Hildr but that only made her move further away.
‘Are you possessed? We can go to the King I’m sure we can find a solution. Let’s talk to dad’. Hilder continued to speak and Kara could only shake her head in disapproval.
‘STOP!!! We can’t do that, I’ll be sentenced to death Hilder. I’m a witch…. Half Valkyrie and half witch’.
‘What!, you’re a half breed’. Hildr said in disbelief.
‘Yes I am, please don’t say anything to anyone’. Kara pleaded.
‘Dad and I, we can get in trouble if they found out we were living with a half breed’. At that very moment Kara felt rejected by her own family member, someone she had grown into calling sister. She knew right then that she never really belonged here or anywhere else for that matter. For that she had to get out.
