Kara kicked Hildr out of her room after the nonsense that came out of her mouth. She loved her cousin but couldn’t really trust her right now. No one knew about this side of her. She so wished that it would stay hidden but her magic seemed to have been tormenting her these past few days. Kara threw herself on her bed, spreading her big wings as well. She wanted to scream but didn’t want worry her father more. She hasn’t come out of her room and Hildr also hasn’t come to force her to cut a cake for her birthday. She was thankful at that part, but it still stung a bit because it looked like her cousin was afraid of her. Kara threw that thought at the back of her head but it still managed to bounce back until she heard a hard knock on her door.
Kara stood from her bed, wings caught in her duvets until she shook them off. She opened the door to see Hildr standing across from her looking annoyed. Kara thought she perhaps read her cousin’s expression wrong but she didn’t, Hildr was indeed annoyed.
‘Dad says it’s time for you to blow your candles and cut your cake’. Hildr said quickly turning to walk down the stairs. Kara could only stare at her retreating figure and sigh in frustration because this was going to be a very long day. She descended to the kitchen and saw her dad and Hildr around the cake on the kitchen island.
‘You are finally here. I thought you would never come out of your room’. Pruor said, smiling at Kara brightly. She tried so smile back but it wouldn’t reach her face so she avoided his gaze as he finally reached the island.
‘I’m here now’. Kara said still not looking at her dad.
‘Yeah, hoorah the birthday girl is here’. Hildr said every word dripping with sarcasm. Kara turned to look at her with her left eyebrows lifted.
‘You seem like you have a lot to say Hildr’. Kara said feeling her anger boiling inside, very ready to explode.
‘What’s the matter with you two?’ Pruor asked them both. They said nothing and only turned back to the cake. ‘Kara blow your candles and cut the cake’. So Kara blew her candles and cut the cake.
‘Thanks dad’. Kara said touching the talisman around her neck now.
‘Oh! I see that talisman is out again. What is it for?’ Hildr asked looking at Kara.
‘It belonged to my mother, that’s all there is to know’. Kara knew she was lying but it had to be done. No one needed to know that this helped control her power and stop her from turning into a dark witch.
‘You never asked yourself the purpose of that talisman?’ Hildr pressed on the matter.
‘What has gotten into you two?’ Pruor asked them looking angry.
‘I’m just curious dad, I came across it a while ago but never paid attention. Yet today something sparked my attention and I remember what they said about talismans. Witches needed it so they never lose control of themselves’. Hildr said smirking as she crossed her arms over each other.
‘What are you implying?’ Kara asked her, knowing very well the game that was being played here.
‘I’m asking a question Kara. If your mother was a witch, how come you can’t weld magic?’ Hildr stated succeeding in angering Kara.
‘Enough!’ Kara shouted, banging the counter as her eyed turned black for a sec and quickly returned to their original colour. Kara composed herself and turned from the island to leave.
‘You haven’t had your cake yet’. Her dad exclaimed, truly unaware at the real reason she and Hildr are at each other’s throats.
‘I’m not in the mood, keep it aside’. Kara continues to walk until she walks out of the house. Catching a breath she never thought she was holding. Hildr will be the death of Kara if she doesn’t figure out a plan and quick.
‘Boo!’ Prince Gunner shouted from the corner of the house. Kara didn’t jump, she only shook her head at his bad attempt to scare her.
‘Nice try Gunner but I don’t scare so easily’. Kara said walking towards him.
‘So I’ve noticed. I tried catching you alone but you disappeared after leaving the throne room’. Prince Gunner said hands behind his back.
‘Is there something you required?’ Kara asked.
‘I have a gift for you waiting at the palace, so after duty tomorrow come and see me will you?’ Prince Gunner said showing Kara his best smile, the sexiest smile known to hypnotise people.
‘You could have just had one of your guards bring it here you know’. Kara said looking at him suspiciously.
‘It’s too big to carry all the way here’. Prince Gunner said moving closer to Kara. ‘Did Brynhildr ask you to marry him again?'
‘Yes he did, when does he not bother me with that?’ Kara asked as she rolled her eyes.
‘Well that’s good and all but if he wants you he can really have you’. Prince Gunner said smiling sheepishly.
‘Whatever, all I need to know right now is what my gift is?’ Kara said leaning on the wall of her house.
‘Remember how you missed a lot of friends? The humans are coming to write peace treaty with us’. Prince Gunner said looking almost pleased at this stupid idea.
‘You will trust human?’ Kara asked trying to hide her worry. This meeting is too soon she didn’t plan for this, Kara thought.
‘No, my mom doesn’t but my dad thinks it’s great for trade’.
‘Who’s coming?’ Kara asked praying she doesn’t hear his name from Gunner’s lips.
‘King Luke and his wife and some others are coming tomorrow’. Prince Gunner said as he moved his body from the wall.
Kara cussed at any goddess that could hear her at that moment. How can fate be so cruel? She couldn’t change much but she would have to make an excuse to hide from him. He couldn’t see her here or all her efforts to stay hidden would be a waste. Kara didn’t understand how Luke became King at 18 because the last time she saw the King he looked very strong and healthy, so his sudden death really shocked her.
‘Oh? Is Brynhildr going to give them a tour?’ Kara asked Prince Gunner hoping he would say no.
‘Yeah he will, he is after all the future King of this place’. Prince Gunner said.
‘I will be forced to follow him around. Why does he always ask for me to guard him?’ Kara said frustrated as she rubbed her eyes and groaned out loudly.
‘That is true, if I could steal you from him I would but unfortunately I can’t’. Prince Gunner said getting closer to Kara.
‘Gunner you know we were forbidden to go there. Your brother made sure of it. Let’s just remain as friends’. Kara said refusing to think about the past.
‘I know Kara but I still have feelings for you and I can’t help it’. Prince Gunner said drawing himself closer to Kara until they are only inches apart.
Kara sighed loudly and blocking his advances by placing her hands on his chest, ‘Stop Gunner we are not going down that road not again. I don’t want the Queen snapping at me again’. Prince Gunner looked hurt but stepped back from Kara.
‘I understand Kara, I have things to do so I’ll leave you to where ever you were going. Don’t forget to come and get your gift’. Prince Gunner turned and walked away from Kara. She looked at his retreating back and groaned. She had other things to deal with. Kara stretched her wings and flapped into the sky, flying towards her friend Sigrun. She needed her help and quick.
