What would you do if a magical door suddenly appeared inside an ancient baobab tree?

For eight-year-old Nia, the answer is simple: open it!

After saving the magical Moonstone, Nia discovers that the old baobab tree holds an incredible secret—a tiny golden door leading to the mysterious Hidden Path, where glowing trails can carry brave explorers to places beyond their wildest dreams.

With her best friend Timo, the mischievous magical guardian Zuri, and General Kuku—the loudest and most adventurous chicken in the village—Nia steps through the door and enters a magical world of talking flowers, mysterious creatures, enchanted mountains, and a village hiding from a terrifying c***k in the sky.

But this adventure is different.

Nia must find a mysterious child, face a valley filled with fear, and discover what it truly means to be brave. Along the way, she learns an important secret: being courageous doesn't mean never being afraid. It means choosing hope even when fear tells you to give up.

Filled with African-inspired magic, humor, friendship, mystery, and heart-pounding adventure, Nia and the Door in the Baobab Tree is a delightful story for young readers who love exploring magical worlds and discovering characters who remind them that they, too, can be brave.

And just when Nia thinks the adventure is over, another door opens...

Where will the Hidden Path take her next?

The magic is waiting. The adventure is only beginning.

NIA AND THE DOOR IN THE BAOBAB TREE
The morning after Nia saved the Moonstone, everything in the village seemed ordinary. The goats argued over a patch of grass. Grandma swept the yard. Children chased one another along the red-earth path. And General Kuku sat on the kitchen doorstep, staring suspiciously at Grandma's basket of vegetables. Nia watched her from behind a mango tree. “Don't even think about it,” Nia whispered. General Kuku looked at her. “I WAS NOT THINKING.” “You were.” “I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE WEATHER.” Nia raised an eyebrow. “The weather is inside Grandma's vegetable basket?” General Kuku looked at the basket, then at Nia. “PERHAPS.” Nia laughed. Life was back to normal—or as normal as life could be after discovering that an ancient baobab tree could talk, meeting a tiny magical guardian named Zuri, and saving a magical Moonstone from a lonely shadow. But Nia couldn't stop thinking about the tiny door inside Mzee Mbao. She had seen it just before sunrise. It was no bigger than a cupboard door, carved into the enormous trunk of the ancient baobab. Behind it were hundreds of glowing paths. Some disappeared beneath rivers. Some climbed toward the clouds. Others twisted through forests filled with strange blue lights. One seemed to lead straight into the stars. Nia had barely slept. She wanted to know where those paths went. After breakfast, she grabbed her bag and packed two bananas, three biscuits, water, a piece of string, and a spoon. She stared at the spoon. “Why am I bringing this?” She thought for a moment. “You never know.” Then she hurried to Mzee Mbao. Timo was already waiting beneath the tree. “How did you know I was coming?” Nia asked. “You always come when something mysterious happens,” Timo replied. “I do not.” Timo counted on his fingers. “The talking tree. The magical Moonstone. The giant chicken.” “General Kuku wasn't that big.” “She was bigger than Grandma's cooking pot.” “That's not true.” “And she shouted.” “General Kuku always shouts.” From behind them came a loud voice. “I HEARD THAT!” General Kuku marched toward them, puffing out her chest. “I AM YOUR ADVENTURE CHICKEN.” “You're not an adventure chicken,” said Nia. “I AM NOW.” The leaves above them rustled. Mzee Mbao spoke. “Nia.” “Good morning, Mzee Mbao.” “Good morning, little explorer.” A tiny blue creature flew from a branch and landed on Nia's shoulder. Zuri smiled. “You came back!” “Of course,” said Nia. “Can we open the door?” Mzee Mbao became quiet. “There are doors that should be opened,” he said slowly, “and doors that shouldn't.” Timo immediately stepped backward. “I vote for the second kind.” Nia ignored him. “What is behind this one?” Mzee Mbao sighed. “Possibility.” “That doesn't sound dangerous.” “Possibility can be more dangerous than a lion.” Timo nodded. “Excellent. We should go home.” But Nia stepped toward the door. A golden symbol was carved into its center. When she touched it, the tree trembled. The symbol glowed. Click. The door opened. A warm breeze rushed out, smelling of rain, flowers, and honey. Beyond it was a narrow golden path with tiny lights floating above it like fireflies. Nia stared. “It's beautiful.” Zuri smiled. “This is the Hidden Path.” “Where does it go?” “Somewhere.” “Can't magical paths have addresses?” Timo nodded. “I would also like to know that.” Zuri laughed. “The Hidden Path leads to places that need to be found.” Nia took a deep breath and stepped through. Timo followed. General Kuku marched behind them. The moment the chicken crossed the doorway, it slammed shut. “WE'RE TRAPPED!” Timo shouted. “Relax,” said Nia. “I AM RELAXED!” “You're hugging a tree.” Timo looked down and quickly let go. “I was checking if it was strong.” They continued along the golden path. Enormous flowers with faces grew on either side. One yawned. Another sneezed. A third leaned toward Nia. “Would you like a joke?” “Yes,” said Nia. The flower cleared its throat. “Why did the bee visit the library?” Everyone waited. “To find a good buzz-book!” There was silence. General Kuku stared at the flower. “That was terrible.” The flower looked offended. “I AM STILL LEARNING.” Nia laughed. Soon they reached a fork. Three paths stretched before them. Above them were three signs: THE EASY WAY. THE CLEVER WAY. THE BRAVE WAY. Timo pointed toward the easy path. “Easy.” Nia looked at the clever path. “Clever.” General Kuku pointed toward the purple mist covering the third path. “BRAVE!” Before anyone could stop her, she charged into the mist. “General Kuku!” Nia and Timo followed. The mist swallowed them. Suddenly, Nia couldn't see anything. “Timo?” “I'm here.” “Zuri?” “Here.” “General Kuku?” “I AM ALSO HERE.” Something growled. Timo grabbed Nia's hand. Two enormous yellow eyes appeared. A giant creature stepped from the mist. It had long ears, enormous paws, and a tail curled like a question mark. “We're going to be eaten,” whispered Timo. The creature opened its mouth. “BOO!” Everyone screamed. The creature burst into laughter. “Got you!” Nia stared at him. “You're not scary.” “I am extremely scary!” “No.” “I can roar!” The creature roared so loudly that birds flew from the trees. “My name is Baku,” he said proudly. “I'm Nia.” “I know.” “How?” Baku pointed at her hand. “You carry the Moonstone's mark.” A tiny golden symbol had appeared on Nia's palm. “What does it mean?” Baku's smile disappeared. “It means the Hidden Path has chosen you.” Timo groaned. “Why does everything magical choose Nia?” “Because she keeps saying yes,” said Zuri. Baku pointed deeper into the mist. “Someone is waiting for you.” They followed him. At last, the mist disappeared, revealing a magnificent valley surrounded by tall mountains. Waterfalls poured from cliffs, silver-leaved trees swayed in the breeze, and a beautiful village stood below. But nobody was outside. “They are hiding,” Baku explained. “From what?” A tiny voice suddenly shouted: “THE SKY IS FALLING!” Everyone looked upward. A dark cloud spread across the sky. Glowing cracks ran through it like broken glass. Then a tiny golden bell fell into the grass. Nia picked it up. A voice whispered: “Ring me when you are ready.” Before she could ask what that meant, a c***k opened across the sky. Purple light shot downward. The trees bent, and the waterfalls stopped. Baku pointed toward the village. “You must find the person who can close the crack.” “Who?” “A child.” “How will we find them?” Baku smiled. “Look for the one who is brave enough to be afraid.” Nia thought about those words. She knew courage didn't mean never being afraid. It meant moving forward even when you were. “I'll find them,” she said. They entered the village. The streets were empty, and people hid inside their homes. Nia knocked on a door. “Hello? We're here to help.” A small voice answered. “Are you really brave?” Nia thought carefully. “No.” Timo stared at her. Nia continued. “I'm sometimes scared. But I try not to let fear make my decisions.” The door opened. A girl about Nia's age stepped outside. Her hair was tied with yellow ribbons. “I am Amara,” she said. “I'm Nia.” Amara looked at the golden bell. “You found it.” “You know what it does?” Amara nodded. “It calls the Sky Keeper.” She pointed upward. A huge bird appeared above the mountains. Its wings were made of clouds, and its feathers shimmered like stars. The Sky Keeper descended into the valley. “Are you the Sky Keeper?” Nia asked. “Yes.” “Can you close the c***k?” “No.” “Why not?” “The c***k was created by fear.” “How do you close fear?” “You don't,” said the Sky Keeper. “You face it.” The villagers slowly came outside. “The c***k grows whenever the people are afraid,” the Sky Keeper explained. “Courage is choosing hope when fear tells you to give up.” Nia climbed onto a stone. “I am scared too!” The villagers looked at her. “But if we all hide, the fear becomes bigger.” Timo climbed beside her. “I am very scared.” “That’s okay,” said Nia. Amara stepped forward. “I am scared.” An old man raised his hand. “So am I.” A little boy shouted: “ME TOO!” General Kuku flapped her wings. “I AM NEVER AFRAID!” Everyone stared at her. A mango suddenly fell from a tree. General Kuku jumped. “THAT WAS SURPRISE!” Nia burst out laughing. Soon everyone was laughing. Even the Sky Keeper seemed amused. The dark cloud began shrinking. The c***k became smaller. Nia lifted the golden bell. “Are you ready?” The villagers nodded. Nia rang it. Ding! A golden wave spread across the valley. The cloud disappeared. Sunlight poured through. The waterfalls began flowing again, and the silver trees sparkled. The villagers cheered. The Sky Keeper lifted its enormous wings. “You have learned the first lesson of the Hidden Path.” “What lesson?” Nia asked. “Courage grows when it is shared.” The golden symbol on Nia's palm glowed. Then a new doorway appeared in the air. Beyond it was another glowing path. Timo stared. “No.” Nia smiled. “Come on.” “No.” “Timo.” He sighed. “Fine.” General Kuku marched forward. “I AM LEADING.” “No, you're not.” “I AM THE BRAVEST.” “You were scared of the mango.” “THE MANGO ATTACKED ME.” Nia laughed as they walked toward the doorway. Before stepping through, she looked back at Amara. “Will we see you again?” Amara smiled. “The Hidden Path always remembers its friends.” Nia waved goodbye and stepped through. A moment later, they were back beneath Mzee Mbao. The sun was setting. The tiny door slowly disappeared. Timo dropped onto the grass. “I need a holiday.” General Kuku sat beside him. “I NEED BISCUITS.” Nia looked at the golden symbol still glowing on her palm. She understood now that the magical door was not simply a doorway. It was an invitation. An invitation to discover, to learn, to help—and to understand that being afraid did not mean she was weak. Sometimes courage was simply taking one small step. Then another. Then another. Nia looked up at Mzee Mbao. “Where does the next path lead?” The ancient tree rustled its leaves. “To a place where the sun never sets.” Nia's eyes grew wide. Timo groaned. General Kuku shouted: “ADVENTURE!” And somewhere deep inside the baobab, another door quietly clicked open. Nia smiled. Her adventure was only beginning.
