Darla
I hung my backpack as I stood right in front of my new school as the sign read “Welcome to Willbourne High” in bold letters. Students filtered back and forth in bright clothes some with smiles on their faces, the rest with grumpy looks which I could relate a lot to.
I was about walking in when I noticed that the atmosphere become really charged as different students rushed towards the front steps.. I followed suit curious to see what exactly was happening and why they all seemed very interested. Two figures stood out in the crowd that seemed to surround them with deep frowns on their faces as they glared at each other.
“ I thought I made it clear to you to stay away from my sister!” The tall one said whose face I couldn’t see because of the black hoodie he had over his head.
“I told you that I like her Jay!, you don’t expect me to”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence when the other tall guy gave him a punch to the face surprising every one including me..
“ Never call me that anymore, you lost that chance when you broke my sister’s heart asshole” he said with a glare.
The bell rung causing the crowd to disperse little by little no words said by anyone. The guy that was hit just held his face before walking off with the rest, I stood there confused at what just happened and at the same time angry that no one felt the need to call a teacher.
“It’s none of my business, let’s just forget what we just saw” I muttered to myself about walking in when I caught a glimpse of the tall guy in the black hoodie.
I couldn’t believe it, he was the handsome guy that I met the first day I moved here.
“You!” I blurted with wide eyes as I stood right in front of him.
He raised his head up to meet mine, his eyes accessing me wondering where he might have seen me with a blank look on his face. We held eye contact as I swooned internally at his amazing eyes.
“Can I help you?” He asked with a raised eyebrow
“Uhm.. don’t you remember meeting me?” I asked cautiously trying my best to stop admiring him.
“Should I?” He asked his voice monotone.
Okay not exactly, but it’ll be nice if you did.. I mean I did find your cat. I thought to myself.
“Uhm yeah.. well your cat Whitney was hiding in my bushes remember” I said with a small smile trying to get him to remember..
“Whitney hides in a lot of bushes” he said and with that he left not bothering to say anything more.
I scoffed in disbelief, his ignorance insulting and a lot humiliating.
“Well that was rude” I muttered as I finally walked into the school to begin my first class.
Well that goes my effort in trying to make a friend.
Class had already started by the time I walked in, my home room teacher stopped talking when he felt my presence the eyes of everyone on me. My eyes went to the back of the class to meet the handsome jerk and I rolled my eyes in annoyance.
Can’t believe he’s in this class..ugh
“And you’re?” My teacher asked
“Sorry, but my name is Darla and I’m new here and I got lost trying to find my class” I said my voice dripping with nerves.
“Alright, I’ll let you off since it’s your first day. But just so you know I do not condone lateness in my class” he warned
“I understand”
“Good, look for an empty seat and sit down. You already missed half of the class” he said as he continued to write some calculations on the board.
First class of the day is calculus, Yay! *note the sarcasm *
I took my seat in the middle row next to the windows hoping to stare outside and imagine my freedom away from this hell called school. I felt a tap on my shoulder, turning my eyes to see who tapped me I was met with a smile from some girl.
“Hi” she greeted with a polite smile
“Hey” I answered back
“Welcome to Willbourne , I’m Josie” she introduced with a grin showing me her set of braces.
“Thanks.. I’m Darla” I answered with a smile.
Well, guess I made a friend already.
Josie seemed nice, she was a red head. Literally she had red hair which was totally cool by the way. She was cute and she seemed like the shy and sensitive type which I admired.
“So what class do you have after this?” I asked
“Art” she answered
“Me too” I said with a low squeal causing her to giggle.
The bell rung signaling that the class was over, students immediately left as they rushed to their next class. I picked up my backpack which laid on the ground as I stood up.
“Since you’re new here, I’ll do the honors of showing you where your next class will be held” Josie offered as she stood next to me.
She was putting on biker shorts on a grey sweat shirt with cool high tops. Her outfit matched with her hair and I had to say that she looked really good, at least my new friend new the importance of looking good.
“Thanks” I answered as we both walked out of calculus class.
“So where did you move from?” She asked
“New york” I answered
“Wow that’s cool”
“So you’re a senior?”I asked
“Yup, what about you?” She asked
“Same”
“Nice, So mind joining me for lunch in the cafeteria?” She offered
“Of course.. I was worried I’ll have to eat lunch all alone” I said with a pout feeling really relieved that she asked.
She gave a short laugh to that before answering me.
“I wasn’t going to make sure that happened.. I’m officially your first friend here Darla” she said with a smile
“I already like that” I answered with a chuckle as we both walked into our next class.
It was finally lunch period and I was seated in the cafeteria with Josie and her best friend Max. They were both so nice to me and fun to hang around. I found out that Max was gay and loved pasta a lot. He was also a senior like us but he said he wasn’t going to college, said how he’s going to follow his passion for photography after high school. Josie was the only girl in six bothers which I found extremely crazy.
I could barely deal with one while she had six! That’s a lot of testosterone. She explained that living with that much people she didn’t think she was unique and she wanted to stand out which gave her the boldness and idea to dye her hair red.
She was originally blonde, her parents were totally against it like she told me but she stood her ground deciding not to give in. She also played the guitar which was totally amazing because she showed me some videos on her phone and I couldn’t help but be impressed.
I can imagine her being in a rock band, she would totally rock fire!
“So max, for how long have you been friends with Josie?” I asked
“Hmm, i think it’s been over four years now” he answered
“Wow, that’s a long time”I said eating my pork chops.
The atmosphere in the cafeteria became charged again with murmurs and whispers..
“Oh my God Josie! Jaden and his group just walked in!! I’m freaking outtt” Max squealed in glee as his eyes stayed glued to a group of teenagers walking in to the cafeteria.
“Here we go again” Josie muttered with a roll of her eyes.
“What’s going on and what’s wrong with max?” I asked in confusion eyeing max
“Max’s obsessed with jaden and his goons, well since junior year” Josie explained
“I’m not obsessed! And they’re not goons” Max defended with a scoff
“Either way they act like they’re all powerful and it’s very annoying” Josie replied..
“I guess they’re like the popular kids in Willbourne High” I said
“You’ve got that right” Josie answered as she went through her phone.
I looked over to where they sat only to be met with those amazing eyes again. It was him, that guy with the crappy attitude and god like looks.
“That’s Jaden” I heard Max say.
“The guy you were openly admiring is Jaden, I know right he’s really hot!” Max fangirled causing me to giggle.
“ I wasn’t openly admiring him, I just wanted to see why you wouldn’t stop squealing” I defended
“Yeah right.. Either way that’s Jaden, and that’s his twin sister Jeiel.. Their dad is the mayor of this town” Max explained causing me to widen my eyes in surprise
His dad was the mayor, well that explained his crappy attitude. I bet he feels like everyone is beneath him. His sister was really pretty by the way, she had brown hair unlike her brother who had black hair. It seemed like she was a cheerleader because she was still in her uniform.
“Everyone wants to be friends with them but they’re only friends with a particular set of people and Jaden only talks to his sister and well that guy Wes” Max continued his eyes gesturing to where Wes sat.
Wes was really good looking but not as good looking as Jaden. He was blonde and he had a mischievous smile on his face as he ate his food.
Weird.
My eyes met with Jaden and he gave me a look before turning his eyes away causing me to scoff in disbelief.
Honestly what exactly is up with that guy?
“I’ve met him before” I muttered
“Who? Jaden..?” Josie asked
“Yeah. The first day I moved here I found his cat hiding in my bushes and he came to get her.” I explained
“Oh my God! You’re so lucky” Max squealed in excitement
“I thought I was but he’s just a real jerk” I said with a shrug.
All of a sudden the whole cafeteria went silent my friends turning to look at me with wide eyes or should I say behind me.
What’s wrong?
“Well that’s a bust, because I was just about to ask you to be my girlfriend” I heard a voice say which sounded very familiar.
I turned to look at who said that only to be met with Jaden who had that same blank look on his face as we held eye contact.
“What?” I said confused
“New girl, do you wanna be my girlfriend?” He asked with no ounce of emotion in his face, his words surprising the whole cafeteria as murmurs increased..
I was just confused to what was currently happening.
“Excuse me?” I asked
“You heard me” he answered
I gave a humorless laugh confusing my friends and surprising everyone.
“Is this a joke?”
“No, is it a yes or a no?” He asked again
I was confused, what was his game at? Why the sudden question, he doesn’t even know me. My dad’s words rang in my ear about living out my senior year and that’s when I decided to play his little game.
I held up his stare, my lips curving into a smirk of my my own.
“Yeah sure, I’ll be your girlfriend” I answered causing the cafeteria to immediately erupt in murmurs.
“Good, your number” he said handing over his phone.
I typed in my number, ignoring the shocked looks my friends gave me as I handed him his phone.
“I’ll text you Darla” he said and with that he was gone.
Various eyes stared straight at me but I couldn’t help the smile that grew on my face.
He remembered my name.
