The Move
~~~~Dream~~~~~
Footsteps thundered all around me my breathe leaving my throat dry and hot. I let out a sharp gasp as i heard the footsteps inch closer towards me. Then silence fell. I heard the soft rustling of the trees and my labored breaths but that was it. Than every so slightly the sound of a leaf being rustled by a foot. Whoever was out here was getting closer to me. I heard a rock tumbling from behind the tree and looked down just as it came to a sudden halt at my feet. There was no second thought as I peeled away from the hiding spot. Dashing through the woods advoiding the low hanging limbs and gnarly roots. I felt several branches cut into my arms leaving blood trailing down them. Whoever was chasing me was not giving up and my running seemed to amplify their passion in the chase. They were so close I could feel their hot breath behind my neck. The next thing I know darkness shaded my vision and everything vanished.
~~~~~Koraline Redwood~~~~~~~
I felt the heaviness from the dream the moment I woke up. The uneasiness in my stomach hadn’t left since I found out about our sudden decision to leave behind the cottage in New Hampshire to a small town in Wyoming. I rolled out of the hotel we crashed at for the night and made my way into the bathroom. Once in the bathroom I shut the door behind my taking a second to catch my breathe and decide if I should seek advice about my dreams. I’m not sure if its the fear of moving since I have only known New Hampshire and no where else. But Aunt May thought that moving away would be for the best, I had been living with her since my mother passed away last year. Gathering my composure I stood and slowly got undressed, stepping into the shower I pondered on what Wispy Hallows would be like. I knew I would be starting and new school Aunt May said it was the exact one my mother and her went to many moons ago. I smiled to myself wondering if there was a chance someone might mistake me for her and I could talk about her with someone. Though her and May were sisters I rarely hear anything from her about my mom. I’m not sure if its because May is scared that I will break down and completely lose it or if she’s just not able to speak about her yet. I heard a slight commotion outside the bathroom and then several light raps to the door.
“ Hey Kora you almost done in there, we don’t have much longer on the drive into the town and I would really like to make it before night falls.” Aunt May slightly yelled through the door.
“Almost done May don’t worry no monsters will get you tonight.” I chuckled to myself, May has always been afraid of the dark since I’ve known her especially with the move to Wispy Hallow. I was telling her how we could have made it in last night since most of our things should already be set up for us but she didn’t want to hear it,
“ Oh don’t you start” She slight laughed back. Turning off the water I heard her say slightly under a whisper. “Oh I hope that true, lets just hope they don’t know we are coming back yet.” I thought for a second who she could mean but I knew that she would never tell me. Getting dressed in a short orange sweater dress I paired it with my slightly worn knee high brown boots. I brushed my black hair back into a pony tail and stepped out of the bathroom. May smiled at me while she finished putting her things into her overnight bag. I placed my clothes from last night into mine pulling it onto my shoulders once it was zipped. “So are you prepared for your new school?” May questioned me her soft smile light up her face.
“Oh as ready as ill ever be I guess, not ready to wear a uniform though” I answered back giving her a sad puppy dog face. May answered back only with a laugh and we headed down stairs to the lobby to check out and make our way to my new life.
~~~~~ At the Cabin ~~~~
The car jerked to a stop outside of a small little cabin. The sun was still up but had slowly started to descend from the sky. I got out of the car amazed by how beautiful the area was. I had been overwhelmed when we pulled into town and the whole placed looked as though it was a movie scene. The beautiful fall colors covered the landscape and the lake right outside of the center of town reflection sparkled from the sunlight. I grabbed a couple of my bags following May inside the cabin. The inside was just as gorgeous as the outside very modern yet slightly country. I made my way upstairs to the second floor. The landing had a door that opened into my very own living/kitchen combo. Off to the side was a bedroom and bathroom it was like a small apartment for only me. I tossed down my bags onto the couch and tore off down stairs to tell May. As I made it to the last steps I heard an unfamiliar voice coming from the main kitchen.
“ I have a right to say hello now don’t I Margaret.” A males voice spoke the voice sent chills down my spine I was about to turn to go hid back in the stairs when I stilled “ Oh well hello Koraline you can turn back around your presence here has already been noticed.” I turned back around surprised not to see someone standing behind me I made my way to the kitchen and plastered on a fake smile.
“Um…Hi its very nice to meet you…?” I gave the man a questioning look hoping he would fill me in on who he was. Maybe he would also elaborate on why he had a right to meet me in the first place as I had no clue who he was. The man gave me a sly smile
“ I am Matt… Matt Redwood. Your uncle it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance young one. You look exactly like Morgana, doesn’t she Margaret.” He glance at May giving her the same sly smile he gave me. Instead of being meet by May usual light smiles he was fixed with a thin face one that hid many emotions. My concern etched on my face when May meet my eyes she smiled at Matt a half hearted one. I c****d my head to the side confused my this interaction.
“I never knew I had an uncle. Why has no one mentioned you before?” I questioned Matt leaning close to him.
“I think its time for you to leave we really must be getting ready for our day tomorrow lots to do.” May said after clearing her throat. She placed her hand on Matt shoulder guiding him to the door. Against Matts protest he was finally pushed and locked out of the house. May sighed and turned around jumping slightly when she spotted me behind her. “He was not nice to me our your mother I don’t want to hear you mention him around her do you understand that?” May stated her face still pulled into a tight line. I wasn’t able to answer her vocally as I was worried she would still hear the interest in my voice instead I just nodded. Turing around I went to make my way back up stairs to finish unpacking.
“Oh by the way May I love the room.” I shouted around my shoulder walking up the rest of the stairs and closing the door behind me. Once inside the room I sat down on the couch and tried to piece together if I ever heard Matts name before.
